Not sure how to make this a full story challenge since I've never done one, so if there's another way, maybe you can pass it along to whoever.
The idea came to me while thinking up one version, then I began to wonder about others.
This should be SciFi only. Not political or country vs country espionage.
The one I was thinking of depicts two alien spacecraft beyond Earth orbit observing the effects. They are congratulating each other on the progress and wonder how soon the population will destroy itself so they can begin colonization. Somewhere in the scene, their home planet is mentioned to be the 19th planet in the COVID system from a distant galaxy.
Another possibility that came to mind focused on the microbes responsible. Turns out they are highly intelligent and altered themselves to be most effective after invading and studying the Human scientific community.
If anyone even reads my threads, consider delving into either of those, or something else.
