Ten years.
Three kids.
Mortgage. Car payments.
You know. Building a life together.
I stare at my reflection in the mirror across the bar. There’s grey in my beard and my hair. I don’t care. It’s hard to care about anything. I take a long drink off my beer, light another cigarette, gaze longingly at the bartender as she passes by, tight jeans hugging a lovely ass.
The bar is smokey and dark. Some old blues is playing on the jukebox. There’s a ball game on the TV. Six months ago, I would have been at home, playing video games with my kids before putting them to bed, watching netflix while giving the wife a backrub and then fucking her, completely oblivious to the fact she was cheating on me and ready to leave.
Well... it was more complicated than that.
I finish my beer, set the empty bottle at the edge of the bar. A moment later, Amber, the bartender, snatches it up and has a fresh one for me. “Thank you darlin,” I say.
“Of course, love,” she replies. I’m just happy I can walk home from this dive. Not that I want to right now, with the way it was raining outside.
