As I was looking over my ratings, I realised that my stories with no sex have some of the highest ratings/votes. Now I consider myself first and foremost a romance writer (with an unusually dirty mind, mouth and fingers for typing), so I am not completely surprised by that. But what is others' experience? Do stories without sex generally do OK here?

No-sex stories seem to do ok here. You may get fewer reads, but on this site it will still be a lot. Also you may want to let the readers know so those who are looking for sex stories won't be one bombing you.

In the end, it's all about the story. How interesting it is and how it holds the attention span of the readers.

My no-sex stories generally have implicit sex.

They seem to do well.

I havent seen them here, but I write plenty of stories about frustrated sex where something happens at the last second to spoil the fun. Some people like them. A friend of mine calls the stories 'teasers.'

I write horror stories and may post one for the hell of it.

James, spoiler stories are usually good. Do you have stories on Lit? Under another name, I wouldn't mind reading some of them. By the way, I sent you my story list on another thread. Did you ever read any of them? You asked if anyone had any good stories and I gave you a few to read.

No stories on LIT. But I'll send you a couple via PM. they arent long.

I was inundated by story submissions and havent read yours as yet. But it will happen. I did see some of your work on another site. I didnt read it, but I did mark it to return to.

I'm writing a story thats presently 4000 words and will conclude today or tomorrow. Its for a close friend who cant find what she wants on porn sites.

I just read your Halloween stories. WONDERFUL!

Record more of your early years and compile it into a book. I've come across more fascinating yarns from the Tri-State Area, and your tales are more confirmation of the quality.

My highest rating story has no sex, implied or otherwise. I gravitate to the Romance and Non-erotic categories here only because that's where my strengths are.

I do think building a fan base makes a difference. Once you have that, those following your work will read everything you put out there.

I have the same issue. I think people would prefer a well-written story to average spank material. Either way, as long as they're reading, that's all that matters.

I prefer stories that arent about Barbie & Ken frolicking at Maui. I'd rather read about Bruno bringing the kids home a day early and ruining Thelma's night of bliss with Ray the building janitor. She cooks her special lasagna, Ray brings along a bottle of 7-ELEVENs best chablis, theyre cuddled on the couch watching AMERICAN IDOL, and Bruno busts thru the door with the 12 year old twins, Damian and his Bad Seed sister, Rhoda. http://www.ugo.com/movies/creepy-kids/?cur=the-bad-seed

It depends. I have a few non-erotic stories on here, and they have done very well.
In fact, the only story I've gotten the beautiful green E on was a non-erotic. Go figure, lol. :p

My highest rated and best received story also has the most (and most varied) sex scenes of the three stories posted under my other identity.

The second highest rating only has a single oral sex scene but that one scene basically the justification for the entire plot.

I've notice that a lot of "erotic stories" on the web should have warning labels on the sex scenes:

"We now interrupt this story for the obligatory sex scene in this chapter" and "We now return you to the actual story."

If the sex scenes are part of the story, then they won't detract from your ratings almost anywhere and will may well enhance your ratings here. If the sex scenes are just there to "qualify the story for posting at an erotic story site" they would probably be better left as just an implication of sex so you can get on with the rest of the story.

My no-sex stories posted here have among the highest ratings I get. They are seasonal contest stories, though, which probably helps raise the ratings.

What I find funny is how many times I've read different authors saying they are almost finished writing their stories. The hard part was to go back now and write in some sex scenes.:)

Stories can have a sexual atmosphere and still be considered non sexual. The romance stories are filled with them. Just to brag a little, my story, "You Gave Me a Mountain Ch. 01" won non-erotic story of the year for 2008 on Lit. Ch. 2 and 3 were under romance.

I cannot speak for everyone else, but some of the stories that captivate me most, have very little sex in them. Of course that isn't ALWAYS the case. However my favorite author here is Penelope Street, and as far as I am concerned she is in a class by herself, and sex is by far not the focus of her stories. So if you enjoy that style, and it seems to work for you, keep going with it. If you have an urge to post a dirty story, by all means go for it. I hope that helps a bit, good luck.

(reminds himself to check out some of your stories)

I posted a non-erotic Romance story here not long ago and it's been well received.
