If I wanted to write stories about the Disney princesses and what happened after "Happily Ever After", where would I put them--in the Fantasy category?

Also, am I totally psycho for wanting to write them?

Psycho? Unlikely. Asking for trouble? Good chance. First off, I'd put them in Celebrities but be advised, the Empire the Mouse Built treats such things very seriously. I'm not sure that they have anyone monitoring Lit for stories involving their property but I, for one, wouldn't risk it. All it takes is one guy in a dark suit with a briefcase and a fat envelope to just ruin your whole weekend. ;)

The quote Disney Princesses unquote are fairy-tale archetypes. That's why ol' Walt used them, because they were already recognisable and also copyright free. The princess "Jasmin" and "Ariel" were named by Disney. But the original story of Aladdin, and of the Little Mermaid, are not under Disney control.

"Cinderella" "Snow White" "Belle" "Sleeping Beauty" AKA "Princess Aurora" or "Briar Rose," "Pocahontas" and, yes, "Mulan" existed generations before the Mouse ever perked up his cute little ears.

That is true. So long as you stick to the original fairy tales, you should be fine but watch it if you bring in Disney originals. However amusing it might be to imaging Daisy frolicking in the money bin with Uncle Scrooge, those two are definitely copywrited.

I wrote my story anyway, removing all overt references to Disney just in case. Thanks for the tips, and I hope you'll read "A Suitable Mother" (about Cinderella) once it gets approved!
