Now that there are some legally married same-sex couples out there, how about if we authors start writing stories about married gay couples?

I have one in the works and I'm hoping to write more.

There are some interesting issues for us to write about:
  • What are the dynamics of a gay marriage?
  • How are those dynamics different from a hetero marriage?
  • What kinds of changes do gay couples go through as they get married?
  • How does being married "feel" different than being committed?
Sure, it all depends on the couple but that's the whole point. We can write about any couple we want, real or imaginary. We can explore how different couples handle it differently.

Most of all, it can be realistic. We no longer have to imagine a world where two women or two men can be married to each other. That world is here, today.

So how about it, folks?

BUT ...

... as the UK TV news explained, only people actually living in Massachusets will be allowed to read it. Separate versions will be needed for the 38 states that ban it.

Why wait for today? In many of my stories the characters get married, even in my period pieces.

The trouble I have in writing modern day marriage is I fear those marriages will be annuled. If that comes to pass, anything I have written about the joys of being actually married will seem a cruel and nasty joke at the expense of those who thought they were.
Since the potential exists to turn a love story into a tragedy, I think I will refrain from adding marriage in the sense of the legal government sanctioned social contract variety to my stories for now.

I do wish you the best of luck with yours however :)

I can't be that pessimistic. The stories themselves will help get people comfortable with the reality of gay marriage.

Popular culture is a big part of the reason that the general public is starting to accept the idea. People are seeing more openly gay people on TV and realizing that it ain't so bad.

If we hold back and wait "just in case" we're helping to perpetuate the idea that gay marriage isn't real.

Or just set the story in Massechusetts.

There are a lot of stories where the setting makes a huge difference to the relationships of the people. A story about Roman Catholics in Northern Ireland would be very different from a story about Roman Catholics in New Jersey.

Am I reading you correctly? Are people in the UK really prevented from reading stories about gay marriages? If so, we need to tell them about Literotica.

Certainly everyone in the US will be able to read the story regardless of same-sex-marriage content.
