South African man suspected of stealing a mobile phone was stoned to death

A South African man suspected of stealing a mobile phone from a woman was stoned to death by a mob Monday in the northern town of Polokwane, police said.

“The community rushed to help the screaming woman. The man was caught and beaten with stones,” police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe told the national news agency SAPA.

Cases of mob justice in crime-ridden South Africa are common, where an average of 43 people are killed every day.

Police estimate that five percent of those killings are acts of vigilante justice.

When I was in Nairobi, I was told that people will stone a street thief there too.

That is a horrible story. It makes me very sad as well as angry.It's so very common in many places in the world; stoning to death or public whippings or similar . It's rare that this happened to a man, mostly it's women that are stoned to death for doing things like wear pants or go to school or even refuse to marry their rapist.

This is another lesson in always fighting for our rights. All rights, human rights!
