This insidious virus has invaded our city to the point where over 7000 school-age children have been forced to miss school over the last 3 days. Is that a record?

It is so serious here that the school board is considering closing schools in order to allow the virus to run its course.

Is this affecting other regions or only the Southeast?

Hey TN_Vixen,
I know I have seen way to many cases of it in the school where I teach but it is also in the SE. But I think a few of the adults have had besides the kids.

Matthew

oh sure, the adults contract it from their children or coworkers.

In my workplace at least one of my coworkers has had it due to her child so I'm sure it will have far-reaching impact.

Thing is.. I can't remember ever being subjected to such an epidemic while I was a kid. Sure I came down with a lot of the colds and such from my classmates, but 7000? And talk of closing schools? What's happening here?

s-virus...no..meningitis..yes

Just north of houston and a little east. Bad trouble with
meningitis. It should have made national news. School kids mostly; Thousands of shots given..hope they work.!!

not just in your area

In Memphis just recently was reported a case of menengitis.

scary shit

TN,
The main reason I think that more kids are catching stuff like this is because there are more kids crammed into schools than when we went to school. And once something gets started it is almost impossible to stop... Hell, I have watched a cold just sweep through my school and I work a really small school compared to some to the big ones in some of the larger cities around the SE. BTW, you can call me Matt, when you call me Matthew, I keep thinking I am in trouble.. :D

Matt (smile)

More kids, crowded conditions.. thus more illness.

Ok, plausible explanation, however.. think about the daycares over the last 7 yrs. Daycare organizations house much smaller percentages of children on average than schools by far. So, what's the reasoning behind this virus epidemic not having been a factor over the last 7 years?

Umm, now that is one thing I havent thought about. Well there might be a few factors, one several different viruses have undergone mutations because of incomplete drug threapies when someone gets them, ie you didnt take all of your meds and it made the damn little bug stronger overall. Second, I dont know this but I think a lot of the kids might have immune systems that arent as robust as we had, I remember just staying outside when I was a kid and doing all types of stuff and if I ask my middle schoolers about doing stuff outside, they look like I have just grown another head, or just landed for the planet of strange science teachers. Just my thoughts on it...

That's best time to call in healthy- when everyone else is dropping like flies. No one doubts you.

This is a virus that is passed via food/contact. If you want to avoid this eat at home. Do take a hand sanitizer with you to work and use it frequently. Use a spray cleaner before you use the bathroom and wash your hands throughly. Do not touch your face or mouth unless you first wash your hands. Get sleep avoid stress and send just maybe you won't pick it up. If you have kids forget it cause they will get you(the little walking disease carriers) but they are so cute.

Nope not just there I'm in the Eastern Midwest if that makes any sense and I just had the damn thing about 2 weeks ago. Worst stomach flu I've ever had in my life so bad I ended up at the hospital because I was throwing up every hour for 2 days.
