STOCKTON (CBS13) — A big component of Stockton’s new experimental program that gives free money to families is heading to the city’s downtown area. Right now, the mayor’s office continues its work on developing the universal basic income project that has captured nationwide attention.

In a matter of months, people living in the city of Stockton will be receiving extra cash with no strings attached. It’s funding families can use for just about anything.

“Food, maybe pay some bills, gas in the vehicle, a lot of different things. Families from this area, the inner city, it will go a long way for sure,” said Christopher Moses, who lives in Stockton.

The experimental program, known as Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration, was introduced by Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs. The program would pay $500 a month to low-income residents.

We'll see how well that works out as the tax base hauls ass for Nevada.

Best wishes to them. UBI is a good concept, but has proved difficult (though not impossible) to implement in America. I'll be curious to see how it turns out.

We know how it is going to turn out when you put good intentions over sound economics.
Again, you get this scenario, let us say that you give x% of your population based upon income charity (from involuntary taxation), then those people who ended up being the x+1% are going to be met with the stark reality, if I can shed that 1% of income that gets me to x%, then I get 'free' money too.
And that's just the first side effect.
Another secondary consideration is that it is assumed the poor will spend the money in a specified fashion that will only benefit the tax base with increased sales. This is not entirely true. In the majority of instances the poor are where they are because they are their own worst enemies and it is predictable that a lot of this 'free' money is going to end up going to, ahem, less productive activities.
