7 dead in Calif. post office shooting

GOLETA, Calif. (AP) - A female ex-postal worker opened fire at a mail processing plant, killing six people and critically wounding another before committing suicide, authorities said early Tuesday.

Deputies responding to a call of shots fired about 9:15 p.m. Monday found two people dead outside the plant.

Two wounded women were located inside and were taken to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. One died and the other was listed in critical condition early Tuesday with a gunshot wound to the head.

Nearly five hours later, deputies found four additional bodies, including one believed to be the female shooter, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Jim Anderson said. The shooter, who was not identified, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, he said.

"We do not believe there is any additional threat to the community," Anderson said.

Aren't you glad that e-mails have lightened their loads.....

Oh wait.... she was an ex employee..... maybe e-mails eliminated her job.....

Uh..... never mind.....

Goleta/Santa Barbara is where I grew up, went to high school.....I'm holding my breath, wondering if any of those are childhood friends.

It appears that when they no longer have mail to process, postal workers get out of sorts

I have talked with postal workers. Apparently a job at the post office, sorting mail is VERY stressful. I didn't really understand why, but there have now been several instances of one of the workers "going postal."

I left a message with my high school best friend who still lives there. Hopefully she'll call me back sometime tonight - if she knows anything.

I hope your friends are all okay.

I took the Postal exam once... if the exam is anything like the job, I can understand why the employees go off the deep end from time to time. A big part of the test involves rapidly memorizing blocks of addresses, many on streets with similar sounding names, which are grouped according to some grid (not shown) in which they intersect. One then has to sort individual addresses into these blocks. For instance, 300-1400 W. Maple, 500-1900 N. Marble, 400-1500 W. Elm, 600-2000 N. Farley, and half a dozen more streets and addresses might be in Block A, and six or so other Blocks, many including different addresses of the same streets, would make Blocks B-F. Then which group does a letter for 1234 N. Marble go into? (No looking...) The system seems designed to make anyone but an idiot savant go out of their mind. Apparently there aren't enough idiot savants to fill the demand, so people go postal...
