The prairie seemed like it spread out for ever, over many grassy hills and valleys. A land rich in soil and hope at least that's what many others hoped for. The Calvary had been sent to Fort Haskins in Colorado six months ago. It had been that long since she had seen her father yet her mother went out west in a wagon train a month after father. Not so for her, Cynthia Edward's was told to stay and finish school. She could follow along in the summer time by train then a coach would take her to the fort in May till she started school in the fall again up north.
Cindy sat now in that coach staring out to the vast lands rolling on by. The train ride was dull it was dark most of the time not getting to see as much of the country side as she had hoped but now the sun was shinning the air crisp and clear as they rolled down the trail. The wind blew in her face as she lean out of the coach looking down the hills and valleys. The driver told her many time to stay in side before she got hurt and even the older man a very nice gentle man that she meet on the train a Mr. Davis, asked her twice to not sit so close but she still had to see where she was going...
It was her that saw the dust rising up beyond the hills behind then heard the whoops and hollers of the savages that seemed to come up on them from no where. the coach broke out into a madding run as the older man pulled Cindy in and pulled her to the floor shielding her to the floor just as an arrow zinged on into the coach sticking to the very seat she was sitting in. the man had saved her life as he grunted and told her to stay down and be quiet...
the couch rolled on down the road bumping and tipping till finally they hear it. The Calvary the sound of the charge it was coming there way to the joys of the driver and his partner but not quiet in time. The drive was shot the other man throw as the coach hit a rut and flipped to the side just as the thundering hoof beats sounded past them. A mixture shouts and war whoops mixing together not knowing who was above then she head men climbing to the couch falling back even thought she saw a horse jump over the side of it. she did as she was told stayed down and silent Mr. Davis seems to have shielded her from most of the sights and held her safe but to the sounds all around her, a mighty bloody battel all around her being fought.
The silence was almost as bad as the battel but finally a hush not a sound not the roar of men talking shouts nothing silence.. then she hear d it ... foot steps in silence. The door over top of them pulled and with a grunt as the door came free.
He looked down at the scene in the coach, it had tipped in a muddy puddle the occupants had been there for some time and he was not sure of any where alive. it tumbled hard and had marks from arrows and yes even bullets all in it. he saw the large older man huddled over someone, then saw a women's skirt and shoes. it was then he spoke and made his presence clear.
"It's all right now sir, ma'am... I am Sergeant Maxwell Anderson. from Fort Myers. let me help you out please all is secure."
His hand lowered down to the man but not a sound came from him he was slumped over the lady and Max saw the arrow that landed in his side he wondered if the lady was in the same condition. those blond curls seemed to drop down into he eyes
as he moved the man to the side as easily as he could." Ma'am.. are you all right. can you hear me?"
Fort Myers was the next fort before her father a smaller one
but still in the same territory.
It was then that Cindy looked up seeing those biggest pair of deep blue eyes she had ever seen his hand extended down to her as she looked to Mr. Davis wondering why he just laid over her still.
"its all right Mr. Davis we can get up not its a solider please get off me sir... "
The young Sergeant smile to the pretty young lady she was dressed all in light blue and had her hair up in a makeshift bun but most had fallen from the tumbling of that coach but still a breath of fresh air out in these parts. yet it was then that the young sergeant waved his hand for her to stay still and be silent a water moccasin had crawled into the coach in that water. he told her not to make a sound and motioned to her that the snake was right beside her slithering deathly near.
