Brandon was so excited.
As the class nerd, he never got to date - not even most of the nerdy girls were interested in him.
He didn’t understand why.
He took good care of himself he thought - he dressed well, he worked out, he was a decent athlete, although, not quite on the same level as the jocks, but he could run most of the track events not much slower than the other guys who had competed for his college, before he graduated, as Salutatorian, and Magna Cum Laude, gaining his Degree in Business & Finance.
He had already been accepted to the local University to study for his Bachelor’s Degree in the same subject.
He wasn’t too upset he had finished with a great GPA score; but second, behind Maria Wachowski; who had Med School firmly in her sights, and being that both her parents were doctors, it wasn’t much of a surprise.
Like him, she had forsaken many Friday evenings, to bash the books and ace the tests which would decide their progress for the coming semesters.
No - he was happy with his achievement, and enjoyed writing and then delivering the Salutation at Graduation. He had pitched it just right, managing to inject just the right amount of humour, and also appeal to most of the audience, from the jocks upwards.
A customary funny tale of a mishap on the Sports Field was told - which one of the Football Team had related to him, which ended up winning a crucial game was the highlight, with Adam Hawkins, the class joker, standing up to take a comedy bow, as the unlikely hero, given that his misunderstanding of the play that had been called by the coach left him scrambling for his life, and reducing the opposition, from the College across the city, into complete confusion. He later admitted that he had run for his life, as he genuinely believed that if tackled, he would have woken up in the Hospital! His photo, holding the ball aloft, as he realised he had won the game, with seconds left on the clock, was printed in the local newspaper, as well as being proudly displayed on the College website.
As he took his seat, to the tumultuous applause, and cat-calls from his class-mates, the ceremony began in earnest. His mind wandered to the planned date this evening with Lisa Reyes, a beautiful brunette from his Business & Finance class.
They had promised each other they would go on a date together on graduation night. He stood to applaud her when she accepted her scroll from the Dean. She shot him a dazzling smile, as she returned to her seat, not far from his. He admired how good she looked in her tailored skirt suit, heels and graduation robes.
Brandon applauded each graduate in turn, until he was called to the stage to accept his scroll and accept the applause from the audience. As he looked out again, across the gathered throng, he realised just how many people had turned out to see the graduation ceremony. That hadn’t sunk in when he delivered his speech!
The Dean asked him to remain on the stage - and then announced the Summa Cum Laude graduate, Maria Wachowski. She made her way to the Dean, accepting her scroll, and turning to kiss Brandon lightly on both cheeks, before the Dean pointed Brandon to his seat, and motioned for the audience to sit, as Maria delivered her Valedictorian speech,
It was perfect, as you would expect, and garnered laughs and a huge round applause when she finished speaking - imparting words of wisdom for her fellow graduates, to help her fellow students in the next step of their lives.
The Dean then called all the students to their feet, and congratulated them on their efforts & achievements, before dismissing them, and triggering the traditional scene of caps being thrown into the air for the final photograph of their College careers.
His dad was there of course, and also his step-mom, Fiona, along with Hannah, who had made a real effort for his graduation - he was so grateful!
They took several photos, for the family album.
As the throng dispersed, he sought out Lisa, but could not see her.
He tried her cellphone, but it just rang, until he left her a voicemail saying he’d call her later, to confirm when to collect her for their date.
He had booked a table for 8pm at Vincenzos, a nice, homely Italian Restaurant that his parents had taken him to a few times, before they had divorced three years ago. His Father had never taken him there since - too many painful memories, he supposed.
As Brandon climbed into his old Hyundai Elantra, and drove home, he began to wonder what he should wear for tonight. Once home, he checked a couple of combinations, and settled for a pair of stone chinos and a pale blue shirt, with some brown leather loafers, smart, but still casual, he thought.
He stood in front of the mirror, and held the articles of clothing against himself, deciding they would be great for tonight.
He laid them carefully on the bed, before calling Lisa again.
Strange - she normally would answer her phone, but this time, it went straight to voicemail, so he left her a message asking her to call him, so they could agree when to meet, as the Restaurant was booked for 8pm.
He was a little worried as she was normally meticulous in having her phone with her, everywhere she went. It was unlike her not to pick up, especially when he called, as they had studied together and become firm friends over the past two years, which is why he had asked her out to dinner tonight.
She was the only girl who had given him the time of day, apart from Hannah, his younger step-sister, who seemed sweet and perfectly normal, and quite sporty, he reflected, over the past two years he had known her, once his Father and her Mother had married, quite suddenly, even though both step-children had known their parents had been dating for a while beforehand.
Brandon jumped in the shower, and made sure he was squeaky-clean. Then he shaved, making sure to use the new blade in his razor, to give a super-smooth finish to his skin.
The sting of the cologne as he splashed it on, told him just how close he had shaved.
He was smooth!
He dressed, and then checked his phone, expecting a message from Lisa.
Sure enough, there was a voicemail, and when he listened to it his heart sank:
“Brandon - it’s Lisa.” Her voice sounded a little distant, until he realised she was drunk.
“I went back to Jenny’s after the ceremony and she said she couldn’t believe you kissed Maria, on stage in front of everybody. You humiliated me, Brandon, after making me believe that I was the only girl for you - and I felt you were the guy for me!”
There followed a sob, then a pause, when he imagined she was taking a drink, as he heard the soft clink of ice in a glass.
“I’m not going out with you tonight, Brandon - in fact, Jenny and I have been hitting her Dad’s JD, and we’re getting loaded - Jenny’s parents are away, and Courtney is coming over with her boyfriend, Chad. We’re going to have quite the night in!”
Brandon remembered Chad, the Pinch-Hitter for the College Baseball Team, all six foot one and 180 pounds of him.
Then she giggled. That’s what hurt the most. She knew what she was doing. It wasn’t all the drink talking, part of it was her wanting to get back at him, for his ‘transgression’.
“Enjoy the restaurant Brandon. I hope you enjoy making out with your hand, whilst I’m getting off with Jenny, Courtney and Chad later!
Don’t contact me again Brandon!”
First came the anger - he had just given Maria a quick peck on each cheek, for appearance’s sake, to satisfy social convention, and trying to act like an adult.
It wasn’t like he’d got hard whilst kissing her, or groped her ass or anything.
(In truth, the thought hadn’t even occurred to him, even though Maria was a pretty girl)
Then followed the sinking feeling. He couldn’t even argue his position, as she had made it quite plain he was not to contact her.
He knew that in her current state, there would be no reasoning with her anyway.
It was all just so….unfair!
He had been so looking forward to tonight, he had saved his pay from his shifts at the local library to make sure he had enough cash to show her a good time, and now…..for what?
He would lose his deposit if he cancelled the Restaurant, as they were popular, and so asked for a small deposit to secure a table, which you didn’t lose - as long as you cancelled with over 24 hours before your booking.
In his case, of course, he had about two hours until he was due to arrive, so he could kiss goodbye to the $20.
He trudged downstairs and flopped onto the couch, and flipped on the TV, searching for something to watch to take his mind off the train-wreck that had become his evening.
His Step-Sister, Hannah, wandered in, and sat in the other chair.
After a few seconds, she looked over and asked him why he was watching TV, instead of getting ready for his date, which he had so proudly told her about the day before.
His mind drifted back briefly to how glamorous she had looked at his Graduation earlier - certainly looking older than nineteen, and turning quite a few heads.
He couldn’t understand how someone so…..attractive - could be single.
Maybe it was her study & training schedule?
They’d never really talked about it, leading their separate lives as they did, with his studies, and her separate College life, meaning they rarely crossed paths during the day.
