The recent news in literary circles has been King's retirement announcement. Do you care? Is he full of shit? I, for one, will miss him if he really decides to go. He's left us with more good books than bad ones.

He'll probably do a Michael Jordan and switch to baseball.

King's dream is a Pulitzer and the bitches who run it are atrocious snobs. Literature cannot be found in genre, they say.

I don't think he'll stop writing. He's probably not capable. I think he'll stop writing genre. Unlike Jordan--who sucked at baseball--King can write literature. He may never publish it, but he'll write it and someone in his estate will publish it posthumously.

That's my edjumicated guess.

I love King. But, I don't care if he retire, as long as he finishes The Dark Tower. Like I stated before, if he doesn't, it's like watching Titanic, &, the credits rol before the ship hits the iceberg.

This was reposted on his official website Sept. 23.
http://www.stephenking.com/rumors.html#retire

"When asked on a recent episode of The View about his plans to retire, Stephen said that he has enough projects to keep him busy for the next 2 years and that he'll make a decision about retiring then. Don't worry, folks, finishing The Dark Tower books is first on the "to do list" during this next 2 years."

It seems to me his recent works, ie. The Black House have him going back to the Tower series much more so than in recent years. Perhaps when he gets this story out of his system, he'll be able to move on to something else... or not. I'm with debbie, time will tell.

I think he's a hack...never liked his stuff, except the idea behind rose red...that wasn't bad.

Which was, essentially, "The Shining" in a different place with a very slightly different twist. And that was, by his own admission, a turn on "The Haunting of Hill House".

He can keep on writing until his dying day, as far as I"m concerned. Very few of his books have been bad, to my thinking.

You too, huh?
Yip. But you never know with that man, he has had me turning the pages of his books since I was 14. Yet to find a book of his that didn't scare me a little or want to put it down until I was finished reading it.

I like most of his stories, particularly the Dark Tower series, and the Green Mile. Though there are several predictable traits to the majority of his stories.

According to the back section of Buick 8, he is working on finsihing the dark towers series, which has three books left, the first being the Wolves of Calla due next year.

I don't think he will retire, hell I don't think he can even stop himself from writing if he tried...

You know, Shakesphere was considered a low brow, mass appealing hack back in his day too. Maybe a couple hundred years in the future kids will be studying King in school.

In fact, back in high school they gave us the option to read Eyes of the Dragon for our literature class which was pretty cool. It just happened to be one of the teacher's favorite books and the administration said okay. I got an A on my report. :)

that stupid fucking rumor has been going around since before his accident. Don't you King fans EVER read anything other than his books?

Stephen King Calls It Quits

Acclaimed horror writer Stephen King has decided to call it quits. After he puts the finishing touches to the seventh volume of The Dark Tower series, the best-selling author says he will not write another book for publication. He says, "I've killed enough of the world's trees." The last three volumes of the 55-year-old writer's fantasy series, The Dark Tower, Volumes 5-7, will bring the 33-year saga to a close. King says books five and six in this series are already written and that he's nearly done with number seven - the final installment. Tentatively, number five will be released in the autumn of 2003, number six in spring 2004 and number seven in autumn 2004. The writer insists, "This finishes it. It's the sequel to everything. And in a sense, once these books are done, there's nothing else to say."

Stephen King Calls It Quits

my bad Lasher. I forgot everything on the Internet is true. Damn me!

King is the best writter of our time. Writters don't retire. he may stop publishing his work but he'll never stop writting. so worst case scenerio we have to wait til he dies to get some good posthumus material to read. but i dont think he'll stop writting. maybe a short break,. nothing more.

Ya know, funny thing is, I always thought of King as a great story teller but a terrible writer. A lot of his stuff reads as if it were written by a 12 year old.

Maybe that explains why it's so popular.

Yeah, the newspaper, the interview he gave for Entertainment Weekly, the official website, whatever.

Rumors are rumors. What comes out of the man's own mouth is something else.

Of course it could just be some elaborate media hoax intended to fool King fans across the globe. Plausable, right?

I read an interview in Entertainment Magazine with Stephen King. He said that he will still continue to write, but will stop publishing. I will believe that when there is a calendar year with no new King releases.
Let's just hope his retirement is of the Michael Jordan type :D

Well, that's rather insulting.

In that case, the same thing would have to be said of damn near all his peers (and by that I mean any successful writer of fiction). Everyone's familiar with the old saying, "Know your audience". If you're writing fiction it should be able to be appreciated by a diverse group of readers.

Average people don't want to plow though pretentious text or some sort of tech manual for pleasure reading. Just because King writes material that is easy to digest doesn't mean it has less value than some starchy novel that literary snobs read and claim to enjoy to impress their peers.

Let him go. He jumped the shark 10 years ago with Insomnia, Gerald's Game, Rose Madder .
