An alternate world where New York City was ravaged during the American Civil War and Gotham City became the country's largest central hub, our story begins thirty years after the war -- 1895. SteamTech Industries has become one of the largest companies in the world, having earned considerable wealth during the war by selling steam-powered weapons and equipment to the Union.
In 1862, several businessmen came together to form SteamTech and sign a deal with Abraham Lincoln to outfit the Union forces. These included Thomas Wayne (Wayne Shipping, Gotham Central Railroad), Carmine Falcone (C.P. Falcone and Co. banking firm), Robert Queen (Queen SteelWorks), Alexander Luthor (Luthor Oil Company), and Morgan Edge (Edge Publishing). While these five backed the new venture financially, the scientific mind behind the tech and the chief engineer was Anthony Ivo, a Gotham University professor and inventor of various steam-powered engines and gadgets.
These six became the richest men in America by the end of the war, though tension grew among them. Secretly, Falcone began hatching plans to oust his partners and take complete control of SteamTech for himself. Thomas and Martha Wayne were his first victims, arranging to have them gunned down outside a theater in 1873. Their eight-year old son Bruce changed forever that day.
Robert Queen soon followed the Waynes to the grave, similarly orphaning his son, Oliver. Then once again, history repeated itself as Alexander Luthor fell, leaving behind his son, Alexander Jr. By this point, Edge and Ivo had realized what was happening and secured deals with Falcone to spare their lives, making him the number one most powerful man in Gotham.
Bruce, Oliver, and Alexander Jr. attended Gotham Academy together as children and speculated about their parents' deaths, fantasizing about becoming vigilantes to take out Falcone and bring him to justice. While these were just fantasies at the time, they eventually became reality years later when the three began fighting crime.
When we start the story, this trio has already been fighting crime for three years, and other costumed vigilantes that have surfaced join with them. I will play Bruce Wayne as "the Bat" and Alexander Luthor as "the Warsuit," though someone else can play Oliver Queen as "the Arrow." I chose the name for Luthor for the steam-powered exosuit he wears to be the heavy-hitter of the team. You can play any DC character, just re-envision them to exist in a 19th century steam-powered Gotham. Obviously, aliens and space travel will not play a part in this at all, so all characters must be Earthlings.
While an ally at first, Luthor grows increasingly frustrated at their lack of progress in cleaning up the city and stopping Falcone, which leads him down a dark path that ultimately transforms him into the very thing he once hated, and eventually Falcone's replacement as the king of Gotham.
