Hi,

An question dealing with the forum but not a story idea:

If you use a story idea you get from the board, is it acceptable to do so without alerting the person you took the idea for, or would it be more polite to tell them and give them updates from time to time?

'Acceptable' doesn't figure in the equation. Take what you wish and use it as well as you can. Speaking strictly for myself, anything I post online -- and that includes my stories themselves -- I consider out in the wild, and fully expect them to be used. At least in this Forum, I post things with the expectation that they will be used to inspire others in their own writing.

As for notifying the poster of the ideas, it is a good idea to do so. Again speaking solely for myself, I am more prone to stick around Story Ideas and to keep on posting ideas and opinions to the Forum if I see concrete proof that they are of benefit to someone. There are only so many minutes in a day, precious moments of my lifespan that can be better spent doing other things if I ever start feeling that participating in the Lit Forums is just a waste of time.

So far, so good ... I enjoy using the Lit BBS areas, and relish the thought that something I might have written actually helped someone complete a writing project.

Regards,

Awsome answer, T -

thanks for responding. Sometimes when I scan the idea's, something sparks but I'm not sure it's exactly what the person intended so I get stuck in a sort of cunnundrum (good lord, my speeling is eckselent) on whether or not the person would want to hear my interpretation. I'll definatly let anyone know, now = )

I guess that's the way it should be. Get inspired by posts or stories and make your own storiy out of it. Tell the original poster or author about it. But even if he dislikes what you are doing, you should not stop. If he does not want others to get inspired by what he does, he should not post. One thing you should not do is stealing a whole story, changing parts of it and repost them as your own.

This board is a place for people to come to express and share their ideas for what they would like to see in future stories here at Lit. It is a brainstorming network of people. People would not post here if they were simply sharing their own story-in-the-make. Many ask, "Can someone write this __________ for me?" Some even say, "I want this _______, this _________, and this __________. Can anyone help me?" I, personally, would write a message in the original thread an idea came from (even if it was months old by the time my story was done) to simply tell the "requester" that it was done. But, "us", the authors, don't owe the "requesters" anything by using the idea they provided us.

It is polite, I believe, to tell the person. If you are using their idea down to absolut details, you may want to ask permission. If you are just going off a concept, like "A Victorian woman learns bondage from her French tutor" then it is kind of an open idea I think.

A couple of days ago, I started going into the sexual role play forum, and I am in a role play scene there that involves a convent and all the dirty stuff that goes on there. It inspired me to start writing a story series set in a convent. If I get a few more pages into it, I will tell the person who started the thread.

Also, I am currently working on making a website of resources for erotica writers, and one section is called "The Idea Bank" which is a place where authors can post their ideas for stories that they don't plan on using, and others can use them, or trade them, or submit or whatever.

I think it depends on how far you take their idea.

If they submit an idea about "Kelly and Ryan are having sex in the shower, and Ryan's sister Rachel comes in, and they convince her to join in" and you take that idea, those characters, that exact scenario, then you have basically done something that's not far off from a commission.

Far from worrying over whether it's "polite", you should TELL the person! They submitted the idea for a reason. Most likely they will be delighted to read a story based on their own idea, and will be grateful to you for writing it.

so far...

So far I think I've done a pretty good job telling people when I like their idea's and want to make them in to stories. I'm grateful for everyone's input on this topic, I would hate to make some sort of Faux Paus (Sorry if I spelled that wrong) during my first month on lit.

I think it might be "faux pas" :D
But honestly, most people are not going to submit an idea they *don't* want to see made into a story. Why should they? Feel free to tell someone if you borrow their idea, but if it simply sparks an idea in your mind or you can't remember their username, don't feel too guiltridden. We're nice folks here, we don't spend too much time trying to hunt down idea-thieves. ;)

I did a few of these in my previous incarnation on here. I spent some time discussing the expanding ideas by private email with the posters.

In one case the story that we ended up with was very acceptable to the originator, and in another (s)he hated it and said the characters were all wrong.

First law of thermodynamics: you can't win.
Second law of thermodynamics: you can't even come out level.

I've just taken on an idea from here and we'll see how that goes.

Frustrations

The other night I awoke with a start, the best idea for a story I'd ever had forming in my head. It was 4 AM and I was super tired, so I stayed under the covers debating whether I should get up and write it down, or go back to sleep and write it down in the morning. Laziness won and I fell back asleep instantly. The next morning, I remembered that I had *HAD* an idea, but for the life of me I couldn't remember what it was! I know that this story was probably the one thing that was going to rejoin the world in peace, cure aids and cancer, win me the nobel prize...but it's gone. Drat. Just venting my frustrations.

Maybe someone else around here has the same idea, and when they write it down it'll spark my memory, and I can write my award winning story! Who knows?

An Idea

Hey Chicklet,

I feel your pain at the loss of an idea, but do not give up,
it may come again.

I had a math professor who was a terminal inventor, much
like Wallace of "Wallace and Gromit", but had the memory
of a steel sieve.

He would keep a spiral bound pad and pen clipped to the
pad, by the side of his bed, and if he had an idea that woke
him in the middle of the night, he would simply write it down.

He also took to writing in the mornings to remember his
dreams.

Both of these ideas kept him from loosing ideas as well as
understanding and remembering his dreams.

Just a thought. Maybe it will help in the future,
Kevin

Hey Kev,

this could definatly work, but I will forever mourn the loss of what I am sure would have been the greatest idea ever. Period. = ) Until the next one come's along, that is HA

Office Depot

Chicklet my dear,

Get your sweet little ass to Office Depot and then all
shall be yours to command...

Lustfully yours,
Kevin

ps. :)

I used to carry a small voice recorder around. Well, that was until my partner found it (now ex-partner). It was difficult to explain the explicit eye-watering contents, as she was oblivious to my current hobby.

Honesty pays!

Mm! An idea for a story!

Honest does pay, I don't think that recording people without their knowledge is a very good idea...it can only backfire and make you look sort of creepy. However having one in your bag so that if you get an idea you can record it, that could be good.
