I just witnessed, from my point of view, one of the most amazing occurrences to happen in my lifetime. Russian President Putin, and President Bush just addressed a high school in Texas (including students from lesser grades). From start to finish the entire event was all smiles, respect, admiration and encouragement FROM all parties involved TO all parties involved, and - this was the amazing part – it was GENUINE!! Absolutely 100% genuine respect and support. There was plenty of laughter. Compliments. Interest. And warmth. All of it – clearly sincere and genuine. (I know the difference).

That war is OVER people.

I grew up in the cold war. It’s over.
I’ve seen the Berlin wall. It’s gone.
I’ve shared hostile views with others of that place called Russia, as the enemy. They no longer are.
That is OVER!

I never thought I’d see the 2 leaders of our countries’ sharing good-natured barbs, and enthusiastic assurances of peace – with a room full of common supporters; American children no less. That just wasn’t a possibility. There was WAY too much water under that bridge. But – I just saw it. Yeah, I realize we haven’t been at each other’s throats for a little while now, but I personally hadn’t seen demonstration of just how clear our common connection is. Now, maybe I’m caught up in the moment (and it’s really too bad if no one else here witnessed that union) but I think that’s as pure an example of letting bygones be bygones one could ever hope to achieve. And it smacks you in the face with the absurdity of ‘holding on’ to hatred, or malevolence.

The fact we’ve achieved this personable relation with Russia (and we HAVE. I’m tellin’ ya. I just witnessed it), and the certainty it will work to both of our advantages (as well as the REST of the world’s) is answer to any concerns of impossible barriers of hostility. Whether that be personal, political, religious, national, or heritage – from your next door neighbor to the nation of China – you can put it in your back pocket and improve your situation. (This board can take quite a lesson from that as well, eh?)

At the risk of hitting the max on the ‘cheese’ thermometer, it makes me hark immediately to the words of John Lennon: “Give peace a chance”. Corny for sure……. it’s also very accurate. The only thing to get in the way of your relations with others – is the refusal to have them.

Now, I don’t want to come across as a bleeding heart ‘let’s have coffee and donuts with Ben Wa Balls’ – I want his head, and every other terrorists, on a platter. But once we’ve stubbornly removed ‘those who refuse to have relations that don’t serve their personal interests (at the cost of death to those they resent)’, there’s no reason to think the world can’t get along. The Middle East can find common ground: If they simply allow for that possibility. We can get along with the Middle East: If we allow for understanding of their position, and not dominate their interests. YOU can get along with that person who ‘did you wrong’ – as long as they’re willing to do the same.

Shit – I’m all roses and warm weather. This is ridiculous…..
Cheers to my Russian compatriots and welcome to mutual support. I like it.

(Lastly, this Putin guy? He’s a real guy. He’s solid. Definitely liking his style. I trust him.)

I’ll shut up now.

Nice sentiment Xxplor. I cant say i saw the exchange but Bush and Puting have obviously developed a friendship. I.m not the biggest fan of bush but he is known to be personable and easily puts people at ease. I agree with your assessment of Putin, he seems to talk straight. Even with the discussion of our missle shield, he criticized our postion on its merits, not on old wolrd hostility. The Russians have a long history of lackluster leadership, I hope Putin can maintain power long enough to encourage change for the better.

As far as the Russian people. I live in Vermont which is home to many expatriate Russians. I remember a big bear of a Russian man telling me stories of his homeland in a bar one night. His love of country and his heartbreak at leaving was evident. I have always found russian culture intrigueing, though often filled with sorrow and misery.

One opinion I would add to your statement. I think the Cold War was mostly about two government, two superpowers....a rivalry. The hatred from one people to the other was never at the level it is/has been in the Middle East. The Middle East problem is much far deeper embedded in the people of the region. Ethnic and religious differences are far more difficult walls to break down than ones of government.

Having said that, I echo your optimism about Russian/American cooperation. Our peoples have much in common and many reasons to be allies.

"Our job is to give people not what they want,
but what we decide they ought to have."
~Richard Salent, former President of CBS News.

Maybe this quote will make you think twice about believing what you see and hear on tv.
I'm sure the rest of the world will want to join the U.S. and Russia in being "good buds" as soon as boy George gets finished bombing the shit out of a stone age country already living in poverty and misery. I believe that Bush's and Putin's performance was a "made for tv movie", including scripts and rehearsals.

I'm all for giving peace a chance. It's boy George who's against it.

A Taliban supporter is stripped and murdered

AS A RESULT OF VISCIOUS KILLING.

I tried to attach the picture but it didn't work. I guess jpg images don't work.
SO WE'RE WINNING THE WAR ON TERRORISM THEN? talibanmassacre.jpg

Clearly - you didn't get the message. Nor are you much aware of yourself.

It appeared genuine to me. And I trust my sense of sincerity. (Not to mention, they weren't pretending to have a love fest with Afgansitan. That wasn't what I was identifying, specifically).
