STAR VENTURERS OOC

It is the dawn of the 21st Century, and the early years of a new age of discovery. We have reached for the stars and found that we are not alone. Out there among the stars are wondrous mysteries and ancient alien civilizations, strange exotic creatures and fantastic worlds of adventure.
These are the journals of the starship, “Pathfinder”, and it’s intrepid crew, on a long-term mission of exploration, seeking new worlds, and going further than anyone has ever dared before….

- Introductory blurb of the 1970s science-fiction TV show, “Star Venturers”.

This is the OOC thread and Casting Call for Star Venturers.
The following crew positions have already been taken;

The Star Venturers idea

The characters in the main thread are either fans of the old “Star Venturers” TV show, or know somebody who is a fan. All of them are in their late teens (18-19) or very early 20s when they originally get involved in the events.

Something happens (which I’ll introduce) that suddenly puts the female characters onto the REAL starship “Pathfinder”, but with far more erotic changes than they could ever have expected from watching the old TV show. Instead of merely sexy uniforms with mini-skirts, the girls find themselves dressed in a style more suitable for bedroom gymnastics, and changed physically to being like the wet-dream fantasies of horny teenage guys. This shocking shift in their reality is made worse by the expectation of all the other real members of the Pathfinder’s crew and everyone else who behave as if the girls are the same female crew-members that have been with the starship since the beginning. Everyone else on the starship knows that the girls have ALWAYS been so over-the-top sexy and dressed in such revealing lack of decent clothing and had the same embarrassing/humiliating mental conditioning (or is it magical?).

To everyone, these female crew-members have always been dressed indecently, and been like a teenage guy’s sexual fantasy, and there’s nothing odd about the starship having so many erotic features or that every monster and alien race that they encounter always lusting after these female crew-members.

The male characters initially are only the male fans of the TV show that the girls already knew, whether they’re a girl’s brother, her boyfriend, or just a male acquaintance. After the reality-shift to the REAL starship Pathfinder, these guys become the regular male crew-members of the starship. They really are the male crew, but just happen to look similar to, and have names similar/identical to, the guys that the girls already knew before. They are the same guys as they would (or could) be in an alternative reality. As regular crew-members, they know everything about the starship and the setting. To them, nothing has changed.

If you are interested in joining Star Venturers, please contact me by PM

All writers must have an original Earth bio of their character, and the basic TV show bio for the character that their Earth character replaces (in the case of the female characters). In the case of the male characters, their actual main character really is the TV show version, but with a lot more depth and details that the TV show never got around to.

Please remember, this is only the OOC not the main thread!
The main thread is Star Venturers

My character (s)

On Earth -

“Mike” Stryker
(Michael James Stryker)

Appearance: Messy long black hair, thick glasses hide his blue eyes, pale and skinny. Age = 23, but looks older (and unhealthy)

Mike has been a fan of the Star Venturers TV series ever since he first saw it, and has bought every comic, novel, and anything else that he could find related to the show. He’s also the most notoriously loony geek in the neighbourhood, spending more time and money on making model starships and playing roleplaying games then in any outdoor stuff. He’s pale from lack of sunlight, skinny from lack of exercise and forgotten meals, and wears thick glasses from staring at the screen of his Apple Mac until late at night.

On the Pathfinder -
Lt.Cmdr “Mick” Stryker
Executive Officer

Appearance: Black hair in military crew-cut, blue eyes, and well tanned with a stocky muscular build. Age = 27, but looks 21 or 22.

Lt. Cmdr Stryker is a tough, athletic, former USAF pilot. In the aftermath of the 45-Minute War (in which his wife and children were killed), Mick Stryker resigned from the USAF and spent two years travelling through Asia seeking a way to deal with the loss of his wife and family. When the United Nations Star Force was formed, Mick applied and was accepted, rising through the ranks quickly due to his cool manner under pressure and his ability to speak several Asian languages well. In his spare time, Mick usually works out in the ship’s gym and practices the unarmed combat techniques he picked up on his East Asian sojourn. He also spends time meditating each day in his room, but keeps his religious beliefs to himself.

Cool pics on the main thread, VK.

Okay here's my characters;

ON EARTH

"Andy" Peterson
(Andrew Peterson)
Age; 21

"Andy" is one the most recognizable greenie/hippie types in the neighbourhood although he never drinks or smokes and is cold sober. He always seems to have a chip on his shoulder, talks big about the problems of the world, but he's the type who never does anything about it. Andy doesn't even go to protest marches unless he thinks there are going to be some real cute girls going along. He dropped out of high-school when he was 17 and has never kept a job longer than a month. Largely because he doesn't like the stress, and isn't into all that capitalistic servitude. He's not a fan of the Star Venturers TV series, or cares much about it, but goes along to the occassional convention because some of his mates are die-hard fans.

Andy is skinny and has bad hair that's often a mess. Despite being vegetarian, he gets sick often, and always seems to have a cold or the sniffles. About the only things that he's known to be good at are laziness and whinging, but in truth he's a very good painter as well - but never had the confidence to try and sell anything.

ON THE TV SHOW/REAL STARSHIP PATHFINDER

"Drew" Pedersen
(Andrew Pedersen)
Age; 21

"Drew" is known as one the finest spacecraft engineers around, despite his youth. He's talented and inventive, able to juryrig just about anything. Drew's primary expertise is in starship propulsion and power systems, but especially in the maintenance and function of the new fangled CX-Drive that allows the Pathfinder to make FTL jumps to almost anywhere in the galaxy if the coordinates of the destination are known. Drew is one of those rare wunderkind engineers; he grew up with a love of machines, was brilliant at math and physics at an early age, and was fortunate enough to get sent to a school for gifted super-kids. When he was just 14 years, he was recruited to work after-school in his father's lab where the first early experiments were being done with CX-drive simulators. Strictly speaking, he didn't graduate high-school, but at 16 went straight into working for Constellation Industries as a researcher and engineer. When he turned 18, Drew resigned from the company and was eagerly accepted by the new United Nations Star Force to be the chief engineer on the Pathfinder.

Drew is a strong young guy, but a bit overweight. He loves to eat good thick steak, sausages, eggs, and can't stand broccoli or those pickles on take-away hamburgers. He's also well known for his love of a good drink, bar-hopping when on R'n'R, dry humour, and very down to Earth practicality.

On Earth
Name: Steve Jameson
Age: 22
Appearance: Of fairly average build and height, but with a little less muscle mass than would have been desirable, due to limited exercise. Light-frame glasses made of slender steel is, perhaps, the only thing that gives away the 'nerd' in Steve. He has light brown hair that makes a good attempt at being nicely groomed, but often fails to achieve the star-like goal, resulting in a few rebel strands sticking out here or there. It is hardly very noticable, but hits his self-assessment, along with other small things.

Jameson is a university student. Living away means a lot less contact with his friends than he would have liked. But the bunch is too closely connected and share too much to just fall apart.

On UNSS Pathfinder

Name: Steve Jameson
Age: 26
Appearance: A lot like his Earthling prototype, with the exception of sometimes rather drastic changes that different life experiences brought. The extensive physical training made his body nicely toned and built. Laser surgery removed the need for glasses or contacts, either of which would have been inconvenient in many circumstances. The green eyes now reflect a much stronger psyche underneath, and manners are more refined from the necessity of attending many social functions with government officials.

Dr. Jameson, as the crew refers to him is a Xenotechnologist. He is a mission specialist whose skills are in understanding the ways alien gadgets function, their abilities and limits, ways to emulate them, or defeat them. Though, he is not in the core crew, he was, like all others on board, trained in everything space travel might entail. Though, of course, to a lesser extent than the crew.

Welcome aboard, Steve Jameson, Xenotechnologist and Chief Engineer Drew Pedersen.

and also hello to the nerdy Steve Jameson and AndyPeterson on Earth as well.

Hi Veryknowing, I love the way you've put it all together. It's very pretty.

My character at last;

The TV show version:
Mei Law
The Weapons Officer on the Pathfinder is a beautiful and slender Chinese woman. Mei Law was born in Beijing but spent most of her life in many different parts of China as her father was the equivalent of a colonel in an elite special forces unit that was frequently moved to potentially troublesome areas. She grew up on army bases, and despite her smal build, Mei became an expert in weaponry of all kinds from small arms to artillery. She was fascinated by big guns. With the rapid advancement of new weapons technologies and computers, as well as completely new kinds of weaponry, Mei realized at an early age that battles in the future would depend more on smart weapons with increasingly extreme ranges and capabilities, but less and less on direct face-to-face combat. She became an expert on the design and use of the new energy weapons and smart weapons, but felt frustrated by China's lack of interest in developing better weapons of this type, so after turning 18, Mei Law, youthful genius weapons designer, fled China and defected to the West.
Now, 20 years old, Mei is a trusted member of the UNSF, a vital member of the UNSS Pathfinder, but she still can't go back to China, as they would consider her a defector and traitor. As has been shown in some Star Venturer episodes, although Mei is an expert marksman with a gun, and brilliant with use of the starship's weaponry, she never did get around to learning how to fight hand-to-hand unarmed, and has no real talent at it.

The Earth version:
Mei Lau
20-year-old Mei Lau was born and raised in the UK, and growing up most of her life in London. Her family are 3rd generation English of Chinese descent, and she has a slight exotic look about her very pretty face probably because one of her great-grandfathers was Russian. She can speak a little bit of Cantonese, understands some more, but has never been much interested in learning the language. Instead, she learnt French at school.
Mei has long wanted to be a fashion designer, and makes her own clothes which have been inspired more by Jean Paul Gaultier and Issey Miyake than by anything Chinese. This has earned her problems and criticism because it seems that everyone expects that just because she has Chinese ancestry that she should be designing Chinese redsilk dresses or similar stereotype clothing - this is despite the fact that nobody in her family has ever gone to Asia for 3 generations!
Desperate to get out the rut, and hoping to make her name somewhere that her ideas might not be dismissed offhandedly, Mei left the UK and went to the USA.
She's been lonely though, as even the American Chinese don't accept her, and everyone thinks her British accent is funny when they see her. Recently, only two weeks ago, at an anti-Bush protest being held in a "Free Speech Zone" (set up many miles away from wherever George W Bush and any media cameras might be) Mei met a young guy who introduced himself as "Andy". He spoke about the importance of keeping the Earth free of pollution, and about all sorts of environmental problems that Mei had never heard of before. Mei also thought it was nice that he didn't try speaking any Cantonese to her, and only used English. He seemed quite smart too. She sort of fell into going out with him, but she has so far drawn the line at french-kissing.

Long-winded as usual! ;)

On Earth

Amy Stryker, Age 20

Mike Stryker's younger sister was home for vacation from her freshman year in college. After having a son, their parents wanted a daughter, so they decided to adopt a girl. Amy's real mother was reportedly from South Korea, her father an American serviceman. With large brown eyes and shiny dark brown hair, Amy could almost pass for Korean, and once a Korean culture magazine had tried to recruit her for a cover shoot. But Amy wasn't particularly interested in her own ethnic background, Amy was more interested in boys, and spending Daddy's money. After much begging, her father had even bought her a flying lesson, which she had tackled with great enthusiasm, if not skill. Her father had been kind enough to straighten things out with the school, after she had - through no fault of her own, she insisted - knocked over the school sign with the wing of her plane.

If being a pilot was not in her future, Amy would be happy being a flight attendant for Singapore Airlines. At 5'4" she was just tall enough, and she had the long legs and slim, curvy figure, even though her exasperated father had stubbornly refused to buy her breast implants. More importantly, she loved the attention of men, though only to a point. Amy was saving herself for marriage, for when her rich prince proposed to her, she wanted to be pure for him - in body, if not in mind. So if a guy was not tall, rich and handsome, and most importantly rich, Amy wasn't interested. She was not above flirting however, for she liked showing the boys what they couldn't have.

Amy made an exception to the flirting however, for her brother and his greasy friends. She couldn't bear to look at her annoying brother's long messy hair and pale skinny frame. But the true source of her resentment lay in the his geeky sci-fi hobby. From an early age, her brother had been talking to her about his sci-fi stories, and to her horror, Amy had taken a secret liking to the genre. Sometimes she stole a book from her brother's room, and read it in secret. She was so fascinated by the wild stories of strange planets and alien creatures, that she couldn't stop reading the stuff, no matter how hard she tried. She blamed Mike for her predicament, for being forced to pretend to hate the stuff before her friends, and her brother, like any self-respecting college girl would. Amy didn't have to pretend to hate the ridiculous costumes and toys her brother and his friends had in abundance. Reading books was one thing, but wearing little space blasters? It was no wonder her brother couldn't get a girlfriend.

So it was with mixed excitement and trepidation that Amy learned her icky brother and his icky friends were going to stage a viewing of Star Venturers this weekend. She'd seen the show a few times, and loved it, but without a TV in her dorm room, she rarely got to see it. Some of her girlfriends were coming too, so she was doubly excited. Not that Mike would ever know.

On the Pathfinder

Lieutenant Amy Yoo, age 23

Born in North Korea, Amy Yoo's family had escaped to China, where she grew up, speaking Mandarin and some Cantonese. It was in China that she met Mei Law, and became close friends, and together they would later defect to the West. It was Mei who inspired her to join the UNSF, where she graduated with honors from the Flight Academy. She could fly nearly any flying machine ever made, from a vintage Cessna propellor craft, to the latest starship. Her friend Mei, the weapons officer, had taught her how to operate the UNSF's standard firearms, allowing her to go on away missions. Amy also had a gift for languages, though she still spoke English with an accent. She hoped to one day meet an alien race, and try to learn to communicate with them in their native language.

While in the Academy, Amy had also taken up the flute, and she was quite accomplished. For exercise, Amy liked to spar with the XO, Mick Stryker, practicing the martials arts she had learned while growing up in China.

So? That's half way there isn't it? ;)

- Mike Stryker (geek who probably perves on her with hope)

The version from Earth:
“Angie” Momoiro (Angelique Momoiro)

“Angie” was always too pretty to be taken seriously when she was in her early teens, and frustrated by this, she responded with angry determination to succeed at everything she did. Throughout junior highschool, Angie was a straight-A student, avoiding all the easy subject choices and studying until late at night. She deliberately dressed down, with baggy oversized clothes and cut her hair short (much to her parents distress). She became by choice the nerdiest girl in the whole school but could beat any of the guys her age in a Karate bout.
Then it all started to fall apart.
Just before her sixteenth birthday, her parents broke up. Not a formal divorce, but her mother took Angie and her younger brother to the other side of the country where they moved in with her Mom’s parents. Her older brother stayed with Dad.
Angie didn’t like moving so far from all of her friends. She liked it even less that the big move was in the middle of the school year. Her grandparents were a lot more old-fashioned, traditional, and were devout Mormons. They insisted that Angie dressed like a girl, wore dresses, and looked feminine. Angie rebelled, and with many arguments with her grandparents and Mom, being frequently grounded, and all the emotional upset, her grades plummeted. Angie started losing in many of her Karate bouts, so she lost confidence and dropped out of her Karate classes, and lost all interest in studying.
She eventually dropped out of highschool entirely, but kept it secret from her Mom for months. When her Mom found out, Angie stole some money from her Mom’s purse and ran away from home, trying to get to her Dad’s place. She didn’t really have enough money though, got picked up by the cops half-way there, and was brought back home unwillingly. Despite her mother’s and her grandparent’s very strict rules, Angie has managed to sneak out of the house most nights and has been hanging around with a street gang that she deliberately joined just to upset her grandparents and Mom. Even the other gang members think she’s crazy. They also can’t get over the fact that she’s still a virgin, and refuses to even kiss a guy unless he’s willing to take her on in a fight. Her attitude more than her actual ability keeps the guys from even trying.
Now she’s 18, and hardly anyone remembers that Angie used to always be a straight-A student. One of her few *normal* friends is Amy Stryker, an older girl who looked-out for Angie when she first arrived in the neighbourhood, and who Angie soon began to admire. Amy seemed so much more practical about getting ahead in the world, and she was ruthless in the way she manipulated the boys.

Star Venturers TV series:
Captain “Angel” Momoiro (Angelique Momoiro)

“Angel” is the brilliant, young, and female captain of the UNSS Pathfinder. In the fledgling United Nations Star Force (UNSF), Captain Angel Momoiro has quickly gained a reputation for unorthodox tactics and hot-headed genius that borders on insanity in the opinion of many older, more conservative officers of the UNSF. Her potential effectiveness as a starship captain was questioned by many critics initially, with some asking, “What madness has possessed the UNSF generals that they choose to appoint a 24 year old maverick in charge of a $2.7 billion dollar starship?”
Her success since then has been legendary, but although the critics have become quieter, there are plenty of competitors & enemies waiting for the “Angel” to fall from grace.
Angel’s background before joining the UNSF was ongoing mystery in the Star Venturers series; her father, a scientist in the Soviet Rocket Corps, was Russian-Japanese, born on the disputed Sakhalin Islands north of Japan….but later in the series it was hinted that he was a geneticist who had modified his daughter’s genes. Her mother who was originally described by “Angel” as being a French physicist was later revealed to be a former DGSE (the French national security agency) secret agent.
Angel is native speaker of both Russian and Japanese, her English fluency is excellent (with an exotic accent), and she can speak Mandarin and French fluently as well (but not perfectly). Whether by training or other reasons, Angel is a very effective and acrobatic fighter, who achieved some spectacular stunts in the series that were often hinted at her being something other than normal.

and a big hello to "Angie" Momoiro (with some worry that she'll kick me)

On Earth : Trey Blake

Trey Blake is the ultimate in laid back stoner. A student at the local university, Trey doesn't work but rather sells pot to his friends as a way of subsidizing his own impressive marijuana habit. A philosophy major, Trey, maintains a grade point average that is just high enough to stay in school. Trey is 5'10 inches and weighs 185 lbs. There is litle to no muscle on his body and a bit of a stomach that is the result of him having the munchies most of the time. He's got shaggy black hair and brown eyes. He's not a fan, particularly, of the TV show Star Venturers TV show but can appreciate the show when stoned out of his mind. He's come to Mike's little get together to get baked and possibly sell some weed.

On the UNSF Pathfinder : Dr. Trent Blake

The twenty nine year old Doctor on the Pathfinder is the picture of professionalism and seriousness. Raised in a strict military family in the United States, His father had been five-star general William Blake. Trent had been pushed to not only be a doctor but to also join the military with a fanatical devotion. Anything less than the very best grades or athletic performance was considered completely unacceptable. Trent thrived on the challenge, and eventually the pushing from his father was unnecessary, as he began to strive for these things himself. His academic record won him admission into West Point and then John Hopkins for Med school. He had a brief but distinguished career in the military and when the UN had announced that they were looking for a Medical Officer for the Pathfinder Trent had applied and dedicated himself to studying all the sciences that he'd need to know. He'd especially taken to Xenobiology.

The job had been the most sought after in the medical community and Trent had wanted it and gotten it. For the mission he's been assigned the rank of commander, his only direct superiors on the ship being Captain Momoiro and her XO. Trent is 6' tall, weighs 175 lbs and is in excellent shape. He has black hair and keeps it cut short.

Hey, welcome aboard Dr Trent Blake, and a "Hey, m'man!" to Trey Blake

Good to see so many posts already on the main thread at such an early stage; it look likes we'll have plenty of character development before the Big Change happens and the action all shifts to the starship UNSS Pathfinder itself.

I was originally planning conservatively for that to happen about 2 weeks from the thread start, but at the rate of the posts we can probably do it much sooner - I'll introduce it anyway when the timing seems right.

Btw, can everyone try to headline your character posts with your character names (in the title perhaps, or in bold). It makes it easier to understand what's going on, I think, plus later on many of the male character names are going to change when action moves to the starship (because there will be different male characters).

Apologies to everyone for the delay in posting. I thought it was Iced_Cherry's turn to post, and she was apparently waiting for me, and it seems every other guy on the thread was waiting for her :)

Okay, so I'll post ASAP and the thread can get moving in the house party at least.

Umm, so is all this PC stuff real, or you guys just made it all up? Wait, I don't really want an answer to that question. :)

Osborne really did make a portable PC that was far more heavy than what most people would call portable. My ol'man had one. I thought it was cool at the time.

A company started by a British inventor called Sinclair made the smallest personal computers around back in the early 1980s. I still have a Sinclair ZX80 and Sinclair ZX81 (with the 16kb memory module) which I've kept as collector's items. I have no idea if they still work. I gave my Sinclair Spectrum to a mate. I used to play "Space Invaders" on it. They were way ahead of their time in compactness and user-friendly design.

LOL - Ha!

Btw, found a writer for Science Officer, I hope. Still hoping for an Astrogation Officer.

This will be the first time that I have joined a roleplaying thread here, so bear with me until it get it right.

My character;

On the Star Venturers TV show starship=

Anne-Marie Serurier
Age 28 (but looks younger)
Science Officer
Anne-Marie is a beautiful exotic French-Vietnamese woman, born in France but she's lived in many places internationally on Earth. Her father was famous French physicist, her mother a well-known Vietnamese oceanographer. With such a background, Anne-Marie became interested in the sciences at an early age, but the trouble was that she became interested in EVERY science. She's studied advanced physics, industrial chemistry, oceanography, seismology, entymology, astrophysics, planetology, and even the paranormal. As well as these, Anne-Marie dabbled in many others. Despite never completing a doctorate course however, the Lysee granted Anne-Marie Serurier a doctorate in "The General Sciences" when she turned 26 years old, in respect of her contributions to the fields of many sciences. Soon after, the UNSF recruited her to be a Science Officer on the UNSS Pathfinder. In the TV show, Dr Anne-Marie Serurier was often ready with the weird science explanation for anything that mainstream scientists couldn't explain, using her synergistic knowledge of many different fields.

Marianne Serurier
Age 20
On Earth
Marianne was on the same cheerleader squad as Amy Stryker, but despite being very pretty, in comparison to Amy's bombshell good looks and fashionable style, Marianne was just another cheerleader. The girl-next-door type that everyone described as cute. She was orphaned in Vietnam while still a small child, and adopted by the brother of her French father, who had moved to the USA with his own family. Marianne is usually considered an airheaded bimbo a lot of the time, and plays up to the role, but her closest friends know that she has an amazing memory for useless trivia; sports scores, odd details about famous people in history, names of all the US presidents and their pets, and a lot more. Presently, Marianne is in training to be a hairdresser, but she's also tried a few other jobs too and hadn't stuck with any of them.
