Standard vs Automatic car

my new car is a 6 speed manual on the floor

it's the only way to go

makes my panties wet just thinking about it :D

Standard, learned to drive in one, and found that I felt uncomfortable with the loss of control over an automatic car. Heh, at least I know that I'm able to drive my friends' cars if need be, and that I can rent a standard clutch truck or moving van if work needs to be done.

Stick...I like to drive my car...not just get from point "a" to point "b". It's about enjoying the ride.

I've never learned to drive a standard so my choice is obvious. My partner said he'd teach me once but I figured that would end in a car accident or an argument ;)

I've been driving an auto for about an year now which I like around town. But nothing beats a stick shift on the open roads and through a tight gorge.....

It depends on what you like...... but......

Know that both types of trannies have improved in guality and reliability in our recent history. But the nod to greater improvement in those areas goes a bit more to the automatic.

You see - the stick shift is a dieing device. Even Semidrivers/truckers are purchasing more automatics than sticks these days. They are not only easier to drive - they are more fuel efficiant.

With that trend in buying power also goes R&D. The only people 'wasting' R&D money on sticks nowadays are sport oriented car manufacturers and racing companies. And even they spend more on automatic research.

It won't be long - 20 to 30 years - where all 'new' cars and trucks won't even have a stick option.

Keep this in mind regarding resale/trade-in of your car. Autos are much more preferred and sell easier.

A sad fact - but true.

For my truck I chose to have a standard transmission.

1.) It is more fun to drive.

2.) It decreases it's chances of being stolen. Most people (including young criminals) aren't too good with a stick anymore.

3.) There is an 800$ difference in sticker price.

Aren't the vast majority of U.S. cars automatics? This isn't even a question when you're buying a new car- I think almost all the cars come with automatic and not stick. I know mine did. I have a Chrysler 300M and stick wasn't an option.

I like automatics. I tend to do things like have a drink next to me, etc. when I drive. I don't have enough hands to be able to drive a stick shift.

Automatic.

I know how to drive it.

I still think standards are just unneccessary work.

Don't argue with me, I don't really care, and I won't understand anyways.

My feelings exactly. Plus, many of my friends can't drive stick so I don't have to worry so much about lending out my car.

However, all of the women in my family drive stick, and I wouldn't mind letting any of them borrow my car.

In my younger years, I liked the stick. Now, having blown my knee out a few times, I like to have an automatic. My Volvo has a little button on it that I can use to downshift when I want more speed and get up and go. If something happens to one of my legs, I can still drive.

My Aprillia motorscooter is also automatic. It is classified as a motorcycle and is licensed and freeway worthy as it can go along at 70 mph without even getting winded. It is great for getting around town.

well you see, it all works like this, Wigs...

Actually, I'll drive a stick or automatic, it doesn't matter either way to me. My Truck is Stick, my Mustang is Automatic.

When I'm back in Central America, almost all cars that I've come across are stick, with few exceptions.

Depends why I'm driving. Around town, running errands, a stick is a PITA. Zooming mountain roads, or running trails... STICK! At the least, knowing how to drive a stick is a good skill to have.

I learned to drive on a standard and drove sticks for many years after. I much prefer an automatic now.

Sparky's right, having a standard these days will hurt you in resale. Nobody wants to drive them in traffic - too much work.

My standard truck has only a speedometer, but my wife's automatic sportscar came with a tachometer. The world is just twisted.

I prefer a stick in City Traffic, while 2-tracking and speeding. To me it means better control and I can get away faster in a stick than I can in an automatic.

For long roadtrips and the such, I do prefer an automatic, with Cruise Control...Mainly for the cruise control. It seems that stick shifts in the states dont come with Cruise control at all.

Automatic because I dunno how to drive stick yet...but I want to learn tho.

I like a standard because it is just more fun, and in an off-road vehicle you have greater control.

One thing I have noticed, is that most new SUV's a 4x4 trucks have automatics with electronic or ful time four wheel drive. It's like the makers don't think we know how to drive them..
