Notice the public confusion and speed of the collapse. It could happen here:

Lira collapse leaves Turks bewildered, opposition angry
By Ece Toksabay and Tuvan Gumrukcu

ANKARA, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Anxious Turks struggled to keep up with a bewildering collapse in their currency and the main opposition party leader said the country was experiencing its darkest "catastrophe" as the lira slumped 15% on Tuesday against the dollar.

Tuesday's meltdown follows weeks of steep falls in the lira which have already driven up prices, leaving ordinary Turks reconsidering everything from their holiday plans to weekly grocery shopping. read more

"There has not been such a catastrophe in the history of the Republic," said Kemal Kilicdaroglu, leader of the opposition Republican People's Party, blaming the currency freefall on President Tayyip Erdogan who has led the country since 2003.

"At this point, you are a fundamental national security problem for the Republic of Turkey," Kilicdaroglu said.

Erdogan has pressured the central bank to slash interest rates in a move he says will boost exports, investment and jobs, but which critics say will further fuel double-digit inflation and erode the lira, cutting deeply into Turks' earnings.

Comparing Biden to Erdogan... interesting...it's like comparing mother Teresa to Stalin.

as the lira slumped 15% on Tuesday against the dollar.

So...the fact that the dollar is surging is somehow proof that Biden is destroying the economy? Geez, KlanGuide, even for you...

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night
Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul, not Constantinople
So if you've a date in Constantinople
She'll be waiting in Istanbul
Even old New York was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it I can't say
People just liked it better that way
So, take me back to Constantinople
No, you can't go back to Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Why did Constantinople get the works?
That's nobody's business but the Turks

Edmund was English and too young to have meaningful memories of a time when his country wasn't at war. The bar was probably set VERY low as far as sweets were concerned.

Also, it's made clear in the text that the Witch's Turkish Delight is formulated to be addictive.

I've tried Turkish Delight -- it's not great, but it is good -- the problem is most is flavored with rosewater, rather an acquired taste. But the lemon is pretty good.

I would risk a proposition that in the long run devaluation of Lira would help their growing industry. Especially if they manage to use current pain to get rid of Erdogan despite his already entrenched dictatorship.

We may hope. Having an Islamist president ain't gonna help their EU application none.

That EU application is a very carefully played circus. Turkey is too large and too different to ever be admitted regardless, but nobody would ever say that out laud, because it is used -- or tried to -- to impose control over Turkey. How successfully, is another question entirely. Perhaps it's time to end the charade, but the fear is, that's all that keeps them to drown down the Islamic path even further.

Because they're Muslims? Because of their human-rights record? Or because of the Kurdish problem?

The Greeks and the Italians would benefit from leaving the Euro and devaluing their currencies, too. Both lied when they joined the Euro and their peoples are suffering as a result.

Portugal and Spain might benefit too, but they did not lie.

Having ability to manage national currency -- or even allow market to adjust it -- is useful tool at times, but particularly in a small currency case can be a liability and outside influence risk. That was our (Baltic) rationalization accepting the euro forced on us as admission requirement, and make sense given the neighborhood and certain banking peculiarities.
