For those interested in participating, this is a research survey being conducted in the UK in relation to attempting to legitimise possible changes to the present laws surrounding injury during consensual sexual activities. While I appreciate it may not have immediate relevance for people not in the UK, I think long term it could influence changes elsewhere as we often see in other legal and political decisions. The address is http://www.demographix.com/surveys/AKGW-YHSN/FCDKSHAW/

Edited to advise I have added further down some sites which speak about the legalities of the lifestyle and what we do in various parts of the world, in particular Australia, UK and USA.

what a fun survey!

And hopefully will help change our archaic laws which direct what we can and can't do of our own free will in the privacy of our own homes and relationships.

Hello

I have been a lurker on this forum for over 2 years now. I've finally registered to thank Catalina for the link to this survey as it is particularly relevant to me as I am in the UK. Let's hope that campaigns and surveys such as this will eventually help bring forward changes in the law.

I am a devotee of some of the more extreme BDSM practices and believe it is our right to have the freedom to do whatever it is we enjoy with our sexual partners, so long as it is within the parameters of SSC, without judgement or repercussions.

Thankyou Catalina, I enjoyed the reflecting. This is a good survey, for a starter. Hope it has some effect!

Welcome to delurk mode....lol....yes, it would be nice if we could live our lives the way we prefer instead of the way some think we should. Hopefully this will go someway toward balancing the options a bit more.

I'm afraid my answers probably weren't as kinky as some of you. Maybe that will get fixed in 2004

While I know of the Spanner case, and support the work of the trust and this research project, it's worth noting that this is just frequency data. It's like finding out how many people practice 'homosexuality', e.g., anal sex. Whether this moves, say, the legislators in Texas, is another issue.

On its own, such frequency-of-acts data does not necessarily lead to changed laws. For instance, suppose a legislator acquires data about frequency of
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

{Example from survey}
Branding (making marks with a heated piece of metal)
Cutting
Fire/heat play (with candles or other flames)
Play piercing (with needles)

-----

S/he may be unmoved to change the law against inflicting more that trifling or transient injury.

To use another example, the frequency of downloading 'stealing' pop songs from the internet is one thing; whether the legislators make it legal (where it's not) is another.

Data on the frequency of pot smoking is well known to US legislators for instance, with no discernable result, though admittedly that data is part of the 'case' presented with more success to other governments.

I don't think there has ever been any legislation changed by just one method of persuasion alone, but history does show that people can use their voice and numbers to push for valid changes. Maybe it won't change the laws in Texas but if it changes the laws in the UK as intended, it will be a start. Everything has to start somewhere and I for one am happy to not have to personally be concerned about this issue while within these borders. Maybe if another country sees the light, by force of numbers or just common sense, the ball will start rolling for the USA and other places to also update their legislation to reflect a 21st century sense of reality.

I have noticed of late that many are still under the illusion that as long as consent is given, the lifestyle we choose to enjoy is legally protected. While it is true in some places and to varying degrees, it is not in most. Another misconception I have observed is that while some realise there are possibilities for legal ramifications, they do not realise that in all cases this may not be as the result of an injury drawing attention, but more so the informing by another party who is not involved. I thought it might be valueable to highlight this issue for those unaware so they can do their best to protect their rights and themselves. Here are links to some sites speaking about these issues.

Geez, I'm such a wuss! About the only interesting answer I got to give was in regards to spanking.

I just saw this...looks interesting.

I didn't realise the law was so complicated. Where does that leave sites like this and the participants...??

Catalina,

Thank you for publicising this site - the work Spanner are doing is really important for all of us in the UK.
It would appear that those of us into S&M are to be denied the rights of practicing our own sexuality that have been granted to every other group.
We are, and if we do not campain will remain, an oppressed and all too often silent minority.
