I have a baby squirrel.

My roof was being fixed today and it was up in the sophets and they were closing up the area and they found it all nestled in a bed of (ick) fiberglass insulation. Since they are closing the area up, clearly mama squirrel will not be able to locate her baby.

So I found a vet kind enough to do a fee exam on him and give me some advice on raising him and doing so in a manner that will allow him to be re-introduced into the wild when he is 6-8 weeks old. Right now he is a nearly bald, eyes still closed, 10 days old. He is a chubby little dude and very cuddly and the vet says he is very hearty.

I know this has nothing to do with writing, but I just thought I would tell you about my new "love". My son named him "Homer".

My grandparents raised a squirrel I found when a storm knocked it's nest out of a tree. It became the most awful, dictatorial, spoiled pet in the history of the western world. Plus the little so and so loved to bite my toes!

So be careful and I suggest steel toed boots ;)

WOK,

Thanks for sharing. This reminded me of my pet squirrel. I had one when I was about ten. I kept it in a wicker basket lined with soft cloth. I got it while I was on a walk. It was a baby too and apparently, it had fallen out of the nest. I don't remember what we called it. I have a sick memory.

A related vivid memory is playing with the tiny thing. It clung to the front of my dress and I walked around with it hung onto my sweater like that. It loved playing around in my long hair. :) I had to peel it off from between the hair. I remember feeling the warmth of its body when I cupped my hands around it.

I had it only for 15 days or so and then it died while I was at school. I remember I was heart-broken for days afterwards.

That is a good memory. Thank you. :)

Ouch.... that doesn't sound like too great a memory.

The Dr. did say that those that fall from trees almost never make it, but since we got it out of the sophet where it lived, it is likely in 100% good health.

Now it is just about keepin it that way.

Friends of ours raised a squirrel, unfortunately they kept it in the house too long. It decided the house was preferable to the wild and over the course of a few months it ripped the house to shreds climbing in through windows etc. It would climb in through an open bedroom window, find itself trapped and literaly wreck the room, those claws are leathal.

In the end it was dispatched - to another part of the countryside.

In Miami, it's common to dress up the heads of bald infants with pretty satin headbands that are decorated with silk flowers or little velvet bows. Personally, I think it draws attention to the baldness, but it's harmless, unlike piercing the baby's ears.

Good luck with Homer. My grandfather raised three baby squirrels and they thrived. None of them had pierced ears, by the way, until they were older and could make that decision for themselves.

If you do disguise Homer's baldness with a satin headband, post a picture, okay?

I have a baby squirrel

Hi, WOK. Are you going to change your AV now to "Stroking my little squirrel"?

I hope this doesn't kill this thread or freak anyone out but I never thought I'd have a place to post my squirrel story.

When I was married to my second husband (of three) and expecting my second baby we moved to a bigger house. My mother came to help and was cleaning the already spotless kitchen. She asked my husband to move the refridgerator so that she could clean under it (!). There, preserved as if stuffed by a taxidermist was a long dead squirrel splayed out in perfect symmetry. Obviously it had trapped itself, died horribly I'm sure, but the a/c from the fridge dried it intact and preserved it.

the end,

LMFO.... what a way to add to the "cute fuzzy squirrel" story.

The 15 days are. :)

I love little, fuzzy things. I was the one they called when a baby bat got into the bathroom and couldn't find its way out. I simply picked it up with my bare hands and went outside and deposited it on the ledge and closed the door. My mother was too shocked. After I came back in and closed the door, she came out of it and turned almost hysterical. *laughing*

Then there was the time I had stood with one in my hand waiting for it to fly away. That one was just too small. I had to drop it eventually cos it wouldn't fly. The great thing was that the maid came in from behind me and didn't know what it was. When she saw what I was holding, she shrieked and jumed back about a foot. Then stood about a metre away, shuddering with disgust/fear/dunno what. LOL

:: sniff ::

Were the tiny e-e-ears p-pierced?

Was it bald like Homer....((sob))...and did it have a satin headband?

If not, it may have been the pet squirrel we lost when I was a child. We used to live in a house like the one you describe. This is horrible.

She, the house was in Oakland and it was probably before you were born. Love seeing your back all over the AH.
