My computer is here! :D

It just arrived! I've got a brand-spankin-new computer! A working one! One that's to my exact specifications! One I can write on! One I can play my games on!

And obviously I'm excited enough to start an entire thread about it!

*rips clothes off and does the happy dance*

Celebrate with me? And while you're at it, pray that I don't manage to mess it up when I set it up and all. And that there isn't anything wrong with it and that everything is indeed the way I want it to be.

I can't even describe how excited I am. My world will be right again after all.

And I'll need to name the new computer. Any suggestions?

Seeing as how this is your dream come true and in as how you most likely would only own a girl computer: "Die Traumfrau"

Congrats Jen. First get the web cam working so we can see the naked happy dance.

Good luck setting it up.

I suppose you should name it something besides Hal.

Why is it that you think I'd most likely own a girl computer? Genuine question, I'm curious. :)

My computers have always been male, actually. My cars, too. Both my cars, my laptop computer and my desktop have had the name "Trevor" after Neville's toad from Harry Potter. (Should that go in quotation marks or italics? I never know.)

Then I noticed that everything I named "Trevor" turned out to be a piece of crap. So I'll try going with a different name this time.

First task will be to make space for the boxes. Then I gotta carry the boxes upstairs. There's three of them.

I'd call my husband and tell him the good news, but he's busy climbing down a windmill. With a harness and a lifeline and all.

I suppose I should be more careful. Those boxes are heavy. And considering I'm losing blood like a accident victim, blacking out halfway up the stairs might end up being a bit more than an inconvenience.

Good work not getting Vista - t'other half *hates* it.

Yes, for sure.

Everyone keeps telling me how Vista just takes some "getting used to". That would be fine if anyone could ever tell me the advantages (that are relevant to me) to offset that inconvenience.

I pay a little bit extra for the downgrade, but I also get both Vista and XP on CDs to re-install at my leisure. If I ever do want to experiment with Vista, I can do it. And then I can make it go away again, too. That's kind of nice.

My lappie is 4 years old and bug-infested. Hubby's was brand new 4 months ago. His is a way higher spec, but runs at the same speed or even slower than mine because Vista is so slow to run and has so many problems. The problem is they tried to copy Mac's OS, without spending the time to get it really nice and clean and without Mac's purpose-built software for hardware.

Are you like me and still have the boxes in the attic for computers that have long since been scrapped for newer ones?

I'm still repenting for inflicting VISTA on my daughter when I sent her off to college in the fall of '07. I'd never by a VISTA system again.

Wow, that is slow.

Now I'm even more glad.

Well, by that comment I meant carrying the full boxes upstairs, since that's where my desk is and where I'll be setting up the computer.

But the boxes for my other computer are still all in the basement, yes. :) The husband insists on keeping all the boxes for everything we ever bought.

It's a guy thing.

My dad uses Vista... but he's got like four different OS' on a bunch of computers and he likes working out kinks and all that, so I guess it's for him. Even so, the only positive he can come up with for Vista is that it's 64 bit. He didn't recommend it for me, either.

What annoys me is that he always tried to keep receipts and such in the boxes. I'd rather put a sticky note on them saying what they're for and put them in a folder full of all my receipts. I find them easier that way. He disagrees.

Thanks. :)

A Dell. Downgraded to XP Professional.

And they planted a tree for me, too.

Cool. And it figures you had to pay to get XP Pro. Fuckers. Microsoft, that is.

I bypassed Vista myself when I lot a new laptop earlier this year.

I staple them to the inside cover of the manual that then goes into an appropriate place in the file cabinet (computer, kitchen appliances, power tools, etc.)

Also a good idea.

I'm still working out the kinks in my system. I'm just settling down with the husband and realizing the importance of being organized and all - organization does not come naturally to me.

But I think I'm getting better at it.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of that either.

I miss German law. Under that, I could just share my husband's XP Pro copy. :(

Sometimes I've been called Felix. But I think that has as much to do with my brother being such an Oscar. We work together. My desk is usually pretty neat. His is always shit piled on crap on top of stuff.

Mine waxes and wanes from one to the other.

I like being organized, and it drives me crazy when things aren't organized. But I still hate doing the actual organizing.

I've gotten a bit more disciplined lately though.

I can do discipline.
