I need a site where I can download Spybot Search and Destroy. Every time I open IE, it crashes after a few minutes. I've already run Norton Antivirus and it found some Adware that it can't remove.

If that still doesn't get rid of the problem you may also want to visit the boards at www.cexx.org
With some luck they can help you there (but keep a HijackThis log ready)

Well, I ran it a couple times, but IE is still acting weird. Also, words like spyware and adware are showing up as links to messagebroadcaster.net, regardless of what part of the page they'ye in. Any other ideas? I really need help with this.

What Operating System are you running, how long since it was installed, tell us more about your computer. It could very well be that windows is taking a big shit, it's famous for that.

Okay, I ran HijackThis as well, and now IE doesn't seem to be crashing anymore. Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate it. I'm using Windows XP, and this computer is about a year old. I'm quite well aware of how all Windows OSs like to crash often and generally create trouble for no reason.

First off using IE is like sleeping with all the hookers in time square everytime you surf the net...so getting rid of that or using is sparingly would be a good idea. Mozilla makes a great freebie explorer called Firefox that includes its own pop up blocker, virus scan on downloads, and spyware blocker.

You can find spybot S&D and firefox on www.c-net.com

They also have articles and information on avoiding spyware and adware. My number one recommendation would be to stop using IE though.

IE isn't a bad browser. In truth, it's one of the better browsers out there. The problem is is so widely used it's an interesting target for hackers/scriptkiddies/... Mozilla's Firefox is indeed a very good browser (I love the tabbed browsing) but more and more people are starting to use it which in turn will attract said hackers out to steal your personal info and browsing habits and vulnerabilities in it's security will be found soon enough so Firefox might become the victim of it's own success.

I'm guessing many of you will already know it but a good deal of the time adware, spyware and so on are installed "with your permission". You download that "free" screensaver or whatever and somewhere hidden in the EULA is a paragraph that says you agree to have software installed that'll monitor your browsing habits. And truthfully, how many of you want to read through ten pages of dry legal text? The makers are counting on you not reading it but you still agree to the terms when you click the install button so you get a screensaver and a little extra you more than likely don't know about.

All in all, no combination of firewalls, anti-malware and anti-virus programs will protect you 100%. You're still your own best protection in the end. Staying away from warez sites, porn sites of dubious origin and sites offering all kinds of free software "you cannot possibly live without" is a good beginning.

We use both Spybot and Adaware on top of Norton Internet Security because sometimes one will catch something the others won't. You might want to also consider using another browser like Mozilla Firefox ...we've had much less spyware and adware since using firefox 99% of the time.

I gotta second the recommendation for Firefox, I switched and have never regretted it. I can't survive without Tabbed browsing now ^_^
