for the inaugural spotlight thread (as discussed here), the HT spotlight is on that photoshop whiz, quoll!

the rules:
1. questions or simple comments only. this is not a place to argue with someone, challenge them or attempt to engage in debate. save the arguing for another time.

2. don't be an asshat: don't ask deliberately embarrassing questions, or stuff that treads on the sacred. the purpose is to get someone to open up, not shut down.

3. have fun. try to think of engaging questions that will get someone talking.

4. anyone can ignore or refuse to answer questions they don't like, without explanation.

5. when this thread's run its course, quoll should review the original thread and select any of the people who said they would be willing to be spotlighted.

everyone clear? then let's get started!

quoll, i've got a few questions with which i would like to begin. these are a series of 10 questions originally developed by french journalist bernard pivot, and popularized by james lipton of inside the actors studio:

1. what is your favorite word?
2. what is your least favorite word?
3. what turns you on [creatively, spiritually or emotionally]?
4. what turns you off?
5. what is your favorite curse word?
6. what sound or noise do you love?
7. what sound or noise do you hate?
8. what profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
9. what profession would you not like to do?
10. if heaven exists, what would you like to hear god say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

Also, what's the most embarrassing story or other piece of information about yourself you're willing to admit here?

1. what is your favorite word? Loquacious.

2. what is your least favorite word? More a phrase than a word, the phrase "Before you go" Usually delivered ten minutes before I leave for work/home/bed and usually involves me doing something that takes considerably longer than ten minutes and has to be done right now, and can't be done by anybody else.

3. what turns you on [creatively, Interaction with other people, ideas just flow. spiritually or emotionally Genuine niceness]?

4. what turns you off? Lies.

5. what is your favorite curse word? So many to choose from, all derivatives of the F word, and craparsebastard.

6. what sound or noise do you love? Rain on a tin roof.

7. what sound or noise do you hate? Hospital respirators.

8. what profession other than your own would you like to attempt? Mad scientist.

9. what profession would you not like to do? Politician (I have limits).

10. if heaven exists, what would you like to hear god say when you arrive at the pearly gates? Sorry.

Carlton "The Blues" (Aussie Rules)

Also, what's the most embarrassing story or other piece of information about yourself you're willing to admit here?
I've done lots of stupid and embarrassing things, thankfully I've rarely been caught.
There was that one time though when I got caught eating dessert off the dining room table, I know it doesn't sound that embarrassing, but let me explain.
Our dining room table was at the rear of the house right next to two very large double windows, and the back door, the windows overlooked the back yard and not much else because of the high fence.
Unbeknownst to me my sister-in-law and her husband had been knocking on the front door, having got no answer they dedcided to go around to the back just in time to catch me tucking into dessert right in the middle of the table.
I know what you're thinking, wow, how embarrassing, not.
I probably should mention that dessert for that night was my wife.

Oh my.

quoll, i love that answer to mistersir's question! :D

how did you develop your mad photoshop skills?

ed

Quite frankly, that was an excellent answer. Now for something a little more mundane: Where do you come from?

There are many things about Quoll that make him an excellent person to know and a good friend. He makes me laugh on regular basis, especially when he works his magic with Photoshop. I have one of his masterpieces that makes me laugh even when I'm not looking at it.

He's a delightfully soft-hearted curmudgeon who loves his family. One of the most beautiful things I have ever read here was a post he made about his wife. If I can find it, I'll link it. It will be a pleasure to read it again. Here it is.

All I can say is, Q-ey, it sucks greatly that Oz is on the other side of the globe from where I am. I'm very fortunate to count you as a good friend.

Quoll was one of the very first people to respond to my posts when I started posting on HT, and I'll always be grateful that he made an effort (I originally typed "error" instead of effort, LOL!) to help me feel like part of the group. :rose:

And now for some questions:

If you had a yacht, what would you name it?

What's in the trunk of your car right now?

In some ways my mind has been ahead of technology, I've often had thoughts of nifty little things I wanted to do to photos and newspapers and such, I used to fool around with printshop I think it was, on my Commodore 64  .
Most of it is just trial and error, but the biggest help I've had has been this board, the people here have always managed to inspire me with what they write (apparently there are a lot of slightly twisted minds here which just trigger off even more twisted thoughts in my mind).
I'm actually pleased with some of the stuff I do, even though it's far below the level I aspire to, I can see where I have improved over the years and a few of the basics are sticking in my head. I'm not the sort to sit down to lessons, I tend to wait until I need to know how to do something before I go and learn it.

That was absolutely beautiful, Q. Thanks for linking it, BG.

Do you have a favorite season, and if so, what is it and why?

What inspired your Lit handle?

Besides qumpkins and conejitos del polvo, do you have an affinity for any other small, furry creatures? :D

I have learned NOT drink anything when reading a post by Quoll unless I wish to douse my monitor with whatever happens to be in my cup.

I come from a land...

I'm from Australia, Victoria to be more precise, and to be even preciserer, the North-east region of that State, we live on a small property of 25 acres about 30km from any major town (pop. 20,000 or more), but only five or so from a few smaller towns (100 or so people).

If you could travel to any part of the world where would it be and why?

I've never really had the urge to travel outside my own country, (anxiety) however given the chance and the lack of anxiety I would dearly love to take the HTers tour, this would take me to quite a few states in the U.S. and a few other countries, I'd love to be able to turn up on a few doorsteps out of the blue. Actually I just had a great idea, not just turn up on their doorstep, but do it with a large bus, picking them up along the way, I might not know enough people to fill the bus but we'd have a blast.

Apart from that, I'd love to hit some major nature spots, rain forests, glaciers, volcanoes, etc etc etc.

hey, take your time, q!

so how'd you meet mrs q?

ed

Sorry silver, I missed this one.
My wife used to walk past me on her way to school, I'd be waiting for my bus and I could hear here coming from the swish her corduroy pants made ( I still love that sound), we never spoke (we were teens, that's against the rules). It turns out her parents owned the local Milk Bar just up the road from my place, so again the odd face to face but strictly business, (as far as girls went, if it was left up to me, I'd still be single and celibate).

Anyway at fifteen I was picked up by a girl at a party, who turned out to be a friend of the girl who lived in the shop, so we got to know each other, hung out together, eventually became best friends.
We still hung out when my girlfriend dumped me, I knew she had a thing for me but I never saw her that way and I wasn't big into the whole asking someone out/going with thing, I was just happy to let things go on at their own pace.

When my Mum got sick and my old girlfriend couldn't/wouldn't comfort me, she was there. When Mum died, she and her family helped keep me together.
Not long after she turned sixteen I kissed her goodnight for the first time (a kiss, like, "I love you", was a very special thing for me, you just didn't kiss someone just for fun (that comes later)). Anyway I floated home that night, happy, nervous and I had a secret (as it turned out it was secret for about 45 seconds, as long as it took her to get back inside and tell her sister).
Things pretty much carried on as they were, the usual snogging at the back gate, her father telling her it was time for me to go home.

One day one of my mates was at my place, we were talking about not much (probably weren't drinking because you know we were underage so we wouldn't have been doing that) when he asked me what was happening with us, were we going out or what?
"Hang on and I'll find out" I said, I walked out the door grabbed my pushy and rode to the house where she was babysitting that night, once inside I said to her, "You know I don't like this asking about going with stuff, but if I was, would you?"

And the rest, as they say is history.

quoll, thank you for these wonderfully complete and indeed, magical answers to the questions to date. i esp enjoyed the answer to mistersir's question, as i mentioned, and that's a lovely recounting of having me mrs q.

bg, thank you for linking that!

more questions:

what's the stupidest misconception you've ever heard about australia from a foreigner?

what's your favorite recent practical joke?

ed

Am I still on your Ignore list? ;)

I'll skip ahead to this one.
I couldn't possibly do it, (for long) your ability to engender misconception (sounds like a new type of birth control or a beauty pageant winner) in perfectly written posts (I don't know how you do it as I think you are probably one of the clearest writers here) has provided this board with some of the best entertainment we've ever had, and shone a light on some of the truly idiotic that live among us.

Answering questions I'm good at, responding to this sort of thing has me tongue tied, I will say that it leaves me feeling immensely happy and that's a rare gift to give, thanks BeeG.

PS: Thanks for that link, I need to read that myself now and then.:rose:
