In about 2 weeks, I'm going to have a lumbar spinal fusion and am wondering about sex (intercourse, masturbation, orgasms, etc.) afterwards. I have searched all over the internet and only found a couple of articles and none that went into any detail.

I thought this would be a good place to ask. Has anyone had a lumbar spinal fusion? How long before you could have sex again, even masturbating? When you orgasmed, did it hurt your back?

I would really appreciate any information. I'm too embarrassed to ask my surgeon.

Many thanks in advance!

The only person to properly tell you all this is your surgeon. This is because every person heals differently.

I had a surgery a few years back and was on my feet 3 weeks after the procedure. A different woman, around same age, same surgeon, had to wait 8 weeks.

Your surgeon has heard it all before; s/he is in the business of healing. If you have ANY questions, ask them and don't be embarrassed. It's your health, your right.

Best of luck and speedy recovery :rose:

Thanks for your thoughts and input.

I know I should ask. I've asked about other activities and the surgeon and his assistant have been vague, saying it will depend on my body. I'm sure they'll say the same thing about sex. I would just like to know what to expect and hear other people's experiences.

I did a quick google search and found a couple of forums and articles that may help. However, each and every one of them said to talk to your surgeon.

Familiar with my G-Spot thread? If that works for you may I suggest the spoon position with your partner behind you and low down on your back so his thumb can hit the right angle.

With this technique YOU don't have to exert at all, your weight and his will NOT be ON your spine and the only possible stress on the spine is if you spasm and contort during orgasm. You should be able to minimize any really powerful convulsive moves by limiting the intensity of the G-Gasms your partner is giving you.

Other than this:

A good tongue lashing will work too!!

Hey there,

I'm not sure I'm doing this correctly. I'm trying to reply to my original post. I wanted to thank you all for your input and advice and let you all to know my spinal fusion (L-3, L-4, L-5) went great! The surgery was September 19th and I was in the hosptial 4 days. It's been almost a month and I'm completely off pain meds. I'm doing in-house physical therapy and lots of walking around our flat road/driveway. My strength is slowly improving, but I still tire easily.

Now for the fun part! Last week hubby and I started doing major petting with him bring me to an orgasm! OMG! It was incredible and NO BACK PAIN! This afternoon we tried the real thing, with intercourse. We did boring missionary, but he kept his weight off me and he had an OMG orgasm! This isn't like our usual playful sex life before my surgery, but it sure isn't anything to complain about. My back didn't hurt and we both thorougly enjoyed it. The outcome was a blissfull smile on both our faces.

For others facing surgery, it's all about communication, patience and a sense of humor between partners.

Thanks again for the good thoughts! They worked!
