Spin Magazines Top Ten Bands
The criteria for the 50 greatest were that ``these groups had to have a roof-raising, history-changing sound, presence or hairstyle''In addition, ``they also had to clearly influence today's music in undeniable ways'' and ``had to be bands that we care about deeply''.
1. The Beatles
2. The Ramones
3. Led Zepplin
4. Bob Marley & the Wailers
5. Nirvana
6. Parliament/Funkadelic
7. The Clash
8. Public Enemy
9. Rolling Stones
10. Beastie Boys

The list is perhaps more revealing in who was left out, including some arguably more influential bands like Steely Dan, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Nirvana again?????

Jesus Christ...I hate that fucking band.

I'm still grappling with 2, 5, 6 & 8 are in, Springsteen didn't even make it into the 50!

I hope that's because they're lumping him in with guys like Elvis & Dylan on an "Influential Artists" list.

If you ask me, the entire Seattle/ grunge sound was derrivitive of
Led Zeppelin's "Achille's Last Stand", or should I say degenerated from?

A Flock of Seagulls

I've always regarded Spin's journalism with some suspicion but this kinda takes the cake.

Nirvana...Okay Why not A Flock of Seagulls instead!!!

I mean we are judging not on musical talent but on hairstyles, and fashion sense aren't we? A Flock of Seagulls knew all five of those guitar chords and played them well...why even Mike Score was a master at the one note/one chord keyboard bridge.

Who can forget Ali Score, pounding those electronic skins for all he was worth.

Paul Reynolds, flipping that guitar pick up and down the strings of his Les Paul so it sounded like **gasp** a real seagull!!
what imagination, what talent!

And the other guy, who played the bass, whose name escapes me at the moment (senility sucks) Damn, he had those three notes down...

amazing and these guys really were rags to riches...hairdressers one day, international pops stars the next.

I think, given time, these guys would have dominated world music and surpassed one hit wonders like nirvana ...they easily could have written "Sprays like Teen Hair Glop" and been personified as "the" band forever.

no I'm not Problem Child's love child with Cath!

:D :D

Okay... just for my own satisfaction..

Was Metallica anywhere on that list? Cuz if they weren't I've got to go study my cookbook...

David Bowie?
Big Star?

...and, yes, of course Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Did Kraftwerk get a mention in the top 50? Probably not but in terms of influence they deserve a top 10 place

As a black man, I'm insulted by the selections. Public Enemy does not belong on the top ten ... they aren't a band! If you need a token, Prince and Jimi Hendrix both fronted Real Bands and were more influential in rock.

The Ramones at #2 has to be a joke.

The Doors should be on this list.

Comments, please?

EP, this is Spin magazine we're talking about here...ergo that little thing called Logic....isn't a factor...

:(

I was shaking my head at this list the other day. FYI:

Jimi- 16 (after Sly and Run DMC)
Metallica - 20
Bowie- 36
Pink Floyd- 49 (after Korn!!)

No Van Halen(?), they influenced an entire generation and decade of terrible music. They have to be considered influential.

In defense of the choices of the Ramones and Nirvana, without them we don't have those no-talent bands like Blink 182, Sum 41, and other bands that don't have a singer and play repetitive chords.

Beastie Boys 10, where would Fred Durst be without them paving the way? I mean even really bad bands had to of been influenced.

It's just Spin magazine and the cover does have the words "... 44 more picks guaranteed to start fights!"

Oh well.

i think the ramones are only on there because the front man died recently and they got the sympathy vote.

The Ramones practically invented punk. Maybe they shouldn't be #2, but top 10 without a doubt.

Regarding Punk

I thought that the "honors" belonged to Johnny Rotten & The Sex Pistols. At least they were more original & influential in the hairstyle category. Behind them I'd nominate The Clash.

I think Lexxie is right about the Ramones.

( Phew!!!! What a relief! One night I was agreeing with everything The Artist Formerly Known As Marxist said about German automobiles, then it was the number of birthday threads
a person should have on page one, then it was Pharmaceutical
Corporations. I'm glad I can tell the difference between his opinions and mine again.)

50. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

There's quite a few I've never heard of, but to leave Van Halen off of this list is absolutely criminal.

Who are the dorks that vote on this SPIN magazine? It comes to my house free, and usually goes in the trash, along with RollingStone and the Readers Digest.

I saw the "Foo Fighters" on Letterman last night, and I wonder when real musicians will ever come back in style. I'm starting to sound like my Dad.

I heard Opie and Anthony talking about this on their show a couple of days ago. This list is damned near a travesty.

I was especially chagrined at how they ranked the rap artists they chose.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were ranked below Run-DMC which was ranked below the Beastie Boys which was ranked below Public Enemy.

Ick...

Grandmaster Flash influenced every one of those groups heavily, and, IMO, should have been rated much higher, certainly above Run-DMC and the BBs. I would have replaced Public Enemy with NWA, for their sheer influence on the Gangsta Rap scene.

And on another note, there was no Aerosmith. None. Nada.

Who voted? I don't envy the task. I find the placement very strange. The omissions even stranger. If you are forming a list of who influenced rock and roll for the longest period you would have to start in the 40's and 50's with black artists. They often sang what white teenagers wanted to hear and scared their white parents to death. Heck, if you listen to the stones they sound as if they are from the Delta. Love in Vain is the perfect example. Lists are fundemental flawed.

7. The Clash

The Clash were dull. Sex Pistols were the real deal.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha
