First off, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, since my spelling isn't always the best (yes I know, I can blame it on English being my second language, but I don't do that)

What amazes me is that people who otherwise doesn't look like having a problem, seems unfit to spell:

Masturbate

it's most often spelled masterbate. I just read a rather long post by somebody, and only caught 2 other spelling mistakes, so I can't figure out why people can't spell it right. Anybody have any ideas?

Is it because it's misspelled so often that people think it's spelled that way?

I believe it is because they think its spelled that way,so why bother to check to see if it is right?

When you say the word,it sounds as if it is spelled masterbate not masturbate. I think its more important that they actually know the word. Because, no matter how it is spelled,it sounds better that jerking off,or playing with ones self. Now those descriptions do tend to get old after awhile....but since you cant write a story saying that you masturbated,I do have to use those words.

Maybe it comes from that Richard Pryer movie who's name is escaping me at the moment where he worked for Master Bates:)

Spelling - who cares

You can get really picky if you like but there really is little point unless you can't understand what someone is trying to say.

Anyway if you get really picky where do you draw the line - being from the UK I spell colour with a "u" in it but for the Americans that would be wrong;)

Much rather hear interesting and hopefully lewd things here.:p

mastErbation

Perhaps this curious mispelling of the word 'masturbation' is a manifestation of deep-rooted childhood-born shame and guilt over the act itself. We rarely see the butchering of such words as 'tonsilitis' or 'colostomy' - why then this treatment of 'masturbation'? I would argue that the alternate spelling of that word has found its way into our writing for primarily psychological reasons - people feel more comfortable mispelling 'masturbation'. On the other hand, the common spelling error could just as likely be the result of the fact the word 'masturbation' is not often used in popular media such as newspapers, magazines, etc., compared with more well-used print-vocabulary as 'pretzel', 'bankruptcy', or 'infidelity'. Regardless, whether it is spelled 'master..' or 'mastur', the point of the matter never fails to reach the reader.
