Okay so I am looking for sites, books, links etc.

What I am looking for is simple....
I am making a list/need a list of 'powers' that people have... paranormal powers to be exact or those that would fall into the realm of paranormal powers

Telekinesis
Clarivoyance

Things of that nature.... even if you know the name of one and can tell me what that particular one would do... I would appreciate it...

I have hit a brick wall on the research with this and cannot perform the corrent searches and looking in the book stores when I run by them doesnt seem to be helping me in the least...

any help would be appreciated.

:rose:

I'm no help... all the powers I have are abnormal....

Telepathy would be another good one. Did a story with a telepathic character. It was fun. :D

Teleportation - The ability to transport oneself from one place to another via mental effort.

Scientifically, none of them are proven to exist. None are even viable enough to engender genuine scientific inquiry really. These powers are typicaly listed ounder paranormal. You'll probably find a lot more about them looking up paranormal on the web than trying to find any hard science efforts in that direction.

You might find related links if you look up people like Edgar Casey, The Amazing Randy, Nostradomus et al.

For hard sciences, I think the majority of material willcome from the fields of Psychology.

Also might try searches for Parapsychology, UFolgy, Paranormal investigations, etc.

If you just want a list of the powers people have climed over the centuries, look up Dungeons and dragons, the game and try the spells. A lot of them allow the player to mimic these purported powers.

We had a thread here once on what super powers you would like to have.

I wanted the ability to get into someone's head and arouse them. From everything from mere tititallation to making someone do a Meg Ryan "When Harry Met Sally" bit and pound the table.

Telepathy - communication between two people, who can read each other's minds.

Precognition - being able to tell the future

Clairvoyant - someone who can "see" ghosts, or things on a supernatural level

Out of body experience - where you leave your body and project it to different places

Psychometry - the ability to know/relate the history of something/someone just by being in its proximity. (like the psychics most used in crime shows- can hold a murder weapon and know what happened.)

Pyrokinesis - the ability to set objects on fire, just by thinking about it.

Levitation - um, self explanatory :)

Teleportation - the ability to transport oneself or objects through space instantly

Automatic Writing - The ability to write intelligible messages without conscious control or knowledge of what is being written.

Channeling - Receiving messages and inspiration from discarnate entities.

Elongation - Paranormal extension of the physical body, reported in some mystics and physical mediums.

Laying on of Hands - A healing practice, in which the healer's hands are placed on or near the body of the sick person.

Shape Shifting - Paranormal ability to assume the form of another person, an animal or other entity.

Therianthropy - The supposed ability to change from human animal from and back.

Xenoglossy - The ability to speak or write in a language that has not been learned.

I would not be so quick to say that no paranormal powers are proven to exist. The story of Joseph of Cupertino follows. He is the Catholic Patron Saint of air travel. Now, I am not Catholic, not do I believe in miracles. However, I need every edge I can get when air travel is involved. So, before I fly I always try to light a candle to Joseph of Cupertino, you can never be too safe!

JOSEPH of Cupertino

Also known as
Joseph of Copertino; the Gaper (derogatory term from his childhood); the Flying Friar; Joseph Desa

Memorial
18 September

Profile
Joseph's father, Felice Desa was a poor carpenter who died before the boy was born. Creditors drove his mother, Francesca Panara, from her home, and Joseph was born in a stable. Starting at age eight, he received ecstatic visions that left him gaping and staring into space. He had a hot temper, which his strict mother worked to overcome.

Apprenticed to a shoemaker. At age 17 Joseph applied for admittance to the Friars Minor Conventuals, but was refused due to his lack of education. He applied to the Capuchins, was accepted as a lay-brother in 1620, but his ecstasies made him unsuitable for work, and he was dismissed. Abused by his family, he continued his prayers, and was accepted as an oblate at the Franciscan convent near Cupertino. His virtues were such that he became a cleric at 22, a priest at 25. Joseph still had little education, could barely read or write, but received such a gift of spiritual knowledge and discernment that he could solve intricate questions.

His life became a series of visions and ecstasies, which could be triggered any time or place by the sound of a church bell, church music, the mention of the name of God or of the Blessed Virgin or of a saint, any event in the life of Christ, the sacred Passion, a holy picture, the thought of the glory in heaven, etc. Yelling, beating, pinching, burning, piercing with needles - none of this would bring him from his trances, but he would return to the world on hearing the voice of his superior in the order. He would often levitate and float (which led to his patronage of people involved in air travel), and could hear heavenly music.

[Note: Joseph of Cupertino was observed levitating over 70 times during his lifetime.]

Houdini could levitate too. Saw penn and teller do it in Las Vegas. Huge crwod at the MGM. tons of eyewitneses. And?

I didn't say such powers don't exist. i said they weren't proven to exist. No one, that I know of, has ever been able to reproduce these kinds of powers under controlled labratory conditions. That goes for mediums and Psycics too.

There is no good reason to believe these things aren't realitites, but there is no hard evidence they are either. Much as Penn & teller took in their audience, good charlatans have been taking in folks for years. PT Barnum had legions of folks who would swear to have seen inctrovertable proof of anything from Mermaids to pin heads, to wild men from borneo.

I didn't realize this was an old topic until I saw a quote from Colleen. I'm half asleep so that kind've freaked me out for a moment.

and Selena hit on all of the points that I would havr thought of.
