How do I know what to get my soon-to-be first grader?

I'll be honest, I don't even know exactly when school starts.

Where do I get this information?

If they were in kindergarten at the same school, you will get a paper in the mail telling you when they start and who their teacher will be.

If they werent you have to call the school.

Some kids today are required to have CALCULATORS. WTF? I learned by adding on a piece of paper, not by punching numbers on something that'd do it for me. It kills me that people can't figure out simple math these days without some machine telling them what to give back, and how to give it. (yes I'm officially old!)

My daughter had to have a calculator for 6th grade.

I remember when they were considered cheating.

Love, he's going to a different school, but in the same district, and there's nobody at the school. I was just there yesterday and it's locked up tight.

Around here, all the places to buy school supplies (walmart, officemax, etc) have lists supplied by the schools and posted inside. You just look for your school and your child's grade.

I'd call the school about the start date. Something I'm supposed to be doing today. I know school starts on the 21st, but I have no idea when round up is, and I haven't signed up on the bus list yet.

Call the district office.

They can tell you when the teachers start opening the school.

schools here always provide a list i dont know about there though

Wanna hear something scarier?

My aunt started home-schooling after her kid brought home a math paper that was given 100%. My uncle looked it over, and noticed that one of the problems was actually wrong. So, he circled it, sent the paper back to school with a note for the teacher to make the correction to her grade book. He got a nasty note back from the teacher, saying that they weren't focusin on 'right' answers, but on 'attempting the work'. So, even though the problem was 4+4, and he'd answered 9, it was perfectly ok. She would have accepted anything from 7-9 because the kid 'got close enough'.

That's a good idea. Do you think Target will have it too?

PCG, that stuff's been going on for years. Atheletes seem to skate by sometimes using that system.

A = Effort anymore, in some places.

Your local Wal Mart should have school supply list. Just make sure you pick up the right list :) They should be labled by what school they go to.

At some point you'll be provided with a list. FOr now I'd say lots of pencils, erasers, rulers etc. Sometimes different teachers have specific things that they like each child to have as well as what's on the regular list.

Has anything been listed in your local paper? It usually is here but hasn't been yet. I do know mine go back the 15th but haven't gotten anything about the school supplies as of today. It'll end up being a mad dash to Walmart at the last minute just like last year.

Some Maths require it... Tri and Calc required me to have some nice ones.

What I had to get my girl was 40 pre sharpened pencils. 10 felt tip markers, pencil top erasers along with one of those big pink erasers, a pencil box, 50 sheets of 12x somehting manilla paper loose. 80 zip lock bags quart size, 200 count tissues.. round top scissors. backpack.. folders with pockets and brads.

I did well this year. Only spent 400 school clothes included. Well i only had to buy one of them school clothes really. The other two will be in pre-k so they only needed backpack and one or two nice outfits. I used to buy them all one outfit every pay week (when my ex worked) so that I would never have to do rush shopping.

K, but we're talkin elementary school SD. I'm pretty sure all of us will recognize that the brain needs assistance when it comes to things beyond basic arithmetic.

And yeah Rubes, Target will have a list.

thanks for saving me the time from going off on SD on this one. I'm not feeling well enough to rip into someone even jokingly right now.

All that I know is that for four kids this year...it cost me $250. And we haven't even done the clothes or shoes yet.

See, this is why I want the list now. My mom comes for a visit tomorrow. :)

I remember back in my day that the school would buy them in bulk and sell the supplies a little bit cheaper and make some money on it that way. Hope that hasn't been shut down. (I'm gussing it probably has)

100$ each in Quebec...... without clothes and the 2 pairs of shoes (yeah, one for the gym and the other for inside the school in winter)...

I will have to start to shop soon. I hate shopping.

Call the central school district then. Those folks should be around year round.

Call your school district; it should be in the white pages. Does your community have the 311 number for non-emergency calls? They can probably help.

As for what supplies, the larger stores near you might post lists of what's needed for each grade; mine do. It's like shopping by numbers. :)
