The Elves never apeared at Helm's Deep in the books. I don't see how it was neccessary they appear there in the movie. The point of Helm's Deep was the impossible battle against ridiculous odds.

In the beginning of the first movie, they stated that men and elves fought together against the evil and the producers/writers were probably looking to recreate the unity, not to mention, bring that gorgeous Haldir into the mix. Yum!

I didn't think they'd be able to make the movie exactly like the books. I think there are too many fine details that they can't quite figure out how to put in the movie, so they modify a bit.

True enough, I'm not really all that disappointed. Peter Jackson was as true to the Tolkien genre as he could be and still make a profitable movie.
