Just writing a small thingy on spanking and wondered how many people indulge in spanking during general, everyday sex as opposed to spanking in BDSM scenarios (I will attempt a poll if I can recall how to do one). your answers;
1] sometimes yes, sometimes no. Spanking is a pleasurable sensation, as often as not, and doesn't need any further justification.
If I want to stir up those endorphins further, I use a cane-- I just wrote a scene were the spankee ended with three solid swats with the flat of a sword. As a top, the visual of the striping pings me-- in the scene that I just wrote, the bottom got a little cut, which the top finds irrisistable.

2. Not every spank is BDSM, not every BDSM scene includes spanking-- in fact, I'd say more flagellation scenes start with a flogger and never go to bare-hand. Seems to me that a flogger or a cat is a waste of time on a pair of buttocks, anyway.

If there's a role-play element, and speaking only for myself-- curative (I like that term!) or punishment. I don't do religion, don't get it, don't care about it.
