Have any of you fellow authors been getting spam comments on your stories? I keep getting comments asking for "mature men" and directing the reader to some shady website. I tend to check my story activity every couple days (I like tracking how stories are doing, especially new ones), so I'm catching these shortly after they go up, but it's a real pain to have them in the first place.

I get them about every time a new story of mine is posted. I delete them and move on. I don’t bother admin about them as I’d rather they use their time to review and post stories. Once I delete them there doesn’t seem to be an issue.

If you forward to Laurel (put SPAM in the subject heading), she'll block the spammer and remove their shit from everyone's in-box.

Oops - this is for spam PMs.

Do what RR says below for garbage story comments :).

In the bottom right corner of every comment ( when viewed from the reader side of the site ) there's a little triangle that you can click to report the comment. That's the best way to go about it, as it gives Laurel a direct link to the exact comment, where she can extract the necessary information to wipe them all out.

From your author dashboard, click the notification of the comment in your recent activity for a quick link to the comment board of the story, where you can scroll to the spam comment and report it.

In the rare case when the spam comes from someone with a registered account, you also will see the option to report the user if you delete the comment from your author dashboard. This option is only available when the comment isn't from anonymous, but rather someone who signed up for an account.

There's really no way to stop such comments from appearing in advance without adversely affecting the experience of regular users.

Probably a Laurel question - but perhaps someone else has already asked and I can save her the bother of answering: I've reported spam comments and the site has removed them. Just recently, I reported one and deleted it myself. After doing so, I wondered, "Did I just inhibit the site's ability to track down the offender by deleting the comment after reporting it?"

Grrr...

Yes, I've had these pop up on two recently-published submissions! The most recent spammer popped up two more times before I removed anonymous comments from my feedback, also reporting the spam to admin. Annoying as hell, especially when you're looking forward to a genuine reader's comments.

On the plus side, it counts as a view to the story once they open it to post the spam. Not sure if that’s worth it and they posted a comment, most likely to get deleted by an author. At the very worst it is annoying, but it actually helps towards a view and a comment on the plus side..

old saying goes - not everyone that shits on you is your enemy. I seen the bogus spam comment as a positive despite the initial annoyance, but then again I have a warped way of looking at things

I would honestly expect the report to include all the necessary data in hidden fields.

However, when I do report those comments, I leave them up and let Laurel nuke them. Better safe than sorry.
