Spacekowboy's totally subjective mid season NFL report.
At the halfway point in the season there's plenty of disappointment already to go around *coughsteelerscough* I think the most efficient way to give my mid season report is to break it down divisionally starting with the NFC.
NFC West
The NFC west holds the title for the lamest division in pro football for what seems to be the last 10 years running. They continue their drive towards excellence this year. With the exception of an injury plagued Seattle Seahawks team. Not a one of them will make the playoffs. I will say this though , there are the makings underway for this to be a premier division in the coming seasons. I like the new look rams. They're playing much improved defense , and Stephen Jackson is a force. The Cardinals, I think, can flourish if they get some offensive line help. The 49ers(as much as this pains me to say it ) have an up and coming qb in Alex Smith and learning from Trent Dilfer will only help him. All of this though is in the future and not this season. The team to beat is still Seattle , and that will be seen when the starters come back.
Seattle takes the west at 11-5
St. Louis tied for wild card at 9-7
NFC NORTH
This one is a no brainer. It's the Bears. They're a good team , but they are beatable. You get to Rex Grossman, and his mechanics fall apart. Pressure from the edges and he flounders like a seafood sale at Red Lobster. There isn't a team in the NFC north that can compete with them. Minnesota can perhaps be a dark horse and sneak into the wild card spot though, provided the defense can keep their intensity all season. The packers are dismal, too many problems to list. QB isn't one of them though. Detroit will be on the upswing in the coming years , but it will be awhile.
Bears take the north 13-3
NFC SOUTH
At the beginning of this season I thought this would be the the most hotly contested division in football. I'm still not far off , although I thought that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be more in the mix than they are. With the emergence of New Orleans as a real threat to take the south , it's putting pressure on both the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons to up their game. Atlanta , when Mike Vick shows that he can pass the ball are a very dangerous team. He isn't as consistent as I'd like to see though, and in the playoffs you need that. I still think they are the best team in the south . Carolina is falling off fast , and I can't quite put my finger on why. They're well coached, they have talent. They just keep shooting themselves in the foot. Tampa has found their real QB of the future i think in Gradkowski. Sucks for Phil's boy, but that's how it goes when you play like shit and lose your starting job. Hopefully he can catch on somewhere else. He played well last season, and he needs to regain that.
Atlanta takes the south at 12-4
New Orleans is a wildcard at 11-5
NFC EAST
Isn't nearly the tough division I thought it would be at the beginning of the season. I Never thought the Eagles would be a factor , and thanks to some last minute heroics by Eli Manning and a defining moment for the New Orleans Saints , they truly are not a factor. Even when they did threaten to become one (I will take this moment to say WOOHOO!). The Redskins look like hell warmed over. Daniel Snyder needs to quit running the team like his own personal fantasy league. Start drafting well. Quit relying on geezers and hasbeens. Frankly I expect more from a Joe Gibbs coached team. That brings us to the Dallas Cowboys. My former beloved. Money that should have been spent on a couple of linemen was instead spent on a prima donna receiver. Had that been done Drew Bledsoe would still be qbing. I don't think however the Bledsoe is the answer at QB. he's far too immobile. Romo is pretty good. Two solid outings as a starter. The O line is still porous at best though. They could sneak into the playoffs , but they've got an uphill battle now at 4-4. Which brings us now to the class of the NFC in my opinion the New York Football Giants. They do everything well . They have star athletes at every key position. They pass rush , they cover well. The run the ball exceptionally well, short yardage especially. When they need the qb to win the game for them he has no problem doing so. The giants are my pick to win the east.
NY Giants take the east 12-4
Dallas tied for wild card at 9-7
AFC to come shortly.
