Spacekowboy's totally subjective mid season NFL report.

At the halfway point in the season there's plenty of disappointment already to go around *coughsteelerscough* I think the most efficient way to give my mid season report is to break it down divisionally starting with the NFC.

NFC West

The NFC west holds the title for the lamest division in pro football for what seems to be the last 10 years running. They continue their drive towards excellence this year. With the exception of an injury plagued Seattle Seahawks team. Not a one of them will make the playoffs. I will say this though , there are the makings underway for this to be a premier division in the coming seasons. I like the new look rams. They're playing much improved defense , and Stephen Jackson is a force. The Cardinals, I think, can flourish if they get some offensive line help. The 49ers(as much as this pains me to say it ) have an up and coming qb in Alex Smith and learning from Trent Dilfer will only help him. All of this though is in the future and not this season. The team to beat is still Seattle , and that will be seen when the starters come back.

Seattle takes the west at 11-5
St. Louis tied for wild card at 9-7

NFC NORTH

This one is a no brainer. It's the Bears. They're a good team , but they are beatable. You get to Rex Grossman, and his mechanics fall apart. Pressure from the edges and he flounders like a seafood sale at Red Lobster. There isn't a team in the NFC north that can compete with them. Minnesota can perhaps be a dark horse and sneak into the wild card spot though, provided the defense can keep their intensity all season. The packers are dismal, too many problems to list. QB isn't one of them though. Detroit will be on the upswing in the coming years , but it will be awhile.

Bears take the north 13-3

NFC SOUTH

At the beginning of this season I thought this would be the the most hotly contested division in football. I'm still not far off , although I thought that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be more in the mix than they are. With the emergence of New Orleans as a real threat to take the south , it's putting pressure on both the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons to up their game. Atlanta , when Mike Vick shows that he can pass the ball are a very dangerous team. He isn't as consistent as I'd like to see though, and in the playoffs you need that. I still think they are the best team in the south . Carolina is falling off fast , and I can't quite put my finger on why. They're well coached, they have talent. They just keep shooting themselves in the foot. Tampa has found their real QB of the future i think in Gradkowski. Sucks for Phil's boy, but that's how it goes when you play like shit and lose your starting job. Hopefully he can catch on somewhere else. He played well last season, and he needs to regain that.

Atlanta takes the south at 12-4
New Orleans is a wildcard at 11-5

NFC EAST

Isn't nearly the tough division I thought it would be at the beginning of the season. I Never thought the Eagles would be a factor , and thanks to some last minute heroics by Eli Manning and a defining moment for the New Orleans Saints , they truly are not a factor. Even when they did threaten to become one (I will take this moment to say WOOHOO!). The Redskins look like hell warmed over. Daniel Snyder needs to quit running the team like his own personal fantasy league. Start drafting well. Quit relying on geezers and hasbeens. Frankly I expect more from a Joe Gibbs coached team. That brings us to the Dallas Cowboys. My former beloved. Money that should have been spent on a couple of linemen was instead spent on a prima donna receiver. Had that been done Drew Bledsoe would still be qbing. I don't think however the Bledsoe is the answer at QB. he's far too immobile. Romo is pretty good. Two solid outings as a starter. The O line is still porous at best though. They could sneak into the playoffs , but they've got an uphill battle now at 4-4. Which brings us now to the class of the NFC in my opinion the New York Football Giants. They do everything well . They have star athletes at every key position. They pass rush , they cover well. The run the ball exceptionally well, short yardage especially. When they need the qb to win the game for them he has no problem doing so. The giants are my pick to win the east.

NY Giants take the east 12-4
Dallas tied for wild card at 9-7

AFC to come shortly.

And now the fun comes. There's so much parity in the AFC it seems that the worst AFC team can beat the crap out of the elite NFC teams. This will be difficult to hammer out , but I will do it for you , loyal readers.

Starting with the West.

AFC WEST

One of the better divisions in the league with the exception of Oakland.(although they did beat Pittsburgh , tee hee) Too many problems to try and decipher with Oakland. KC is very surprising , Damon Huard is playing exceptionally well. I thought that with the retirement of Willie Roaf that the running game would struggle , It has at times this season , but it is coming on strong as of late. There could very well be an upset here for the wild card. Denver is coming along nicely now. Their offense has sputtered, but it looks as though they are back on course. This is s difficult division to call , but I gotta go with the San Diego Chargers. As good as the other teams are in the division, they don't seems to be any better than the Chargers. I had my reservations going into the season about Philip Rivers ability to lead, and deliver. He has put those fears to rest. He's coming along quite nicely. The defense is damn good, with or without Shawne Merriman. Do I really need to mention LaDainian Tomlinson? He's like Barry Sanders if Barry had an offensive line worth a damn.

Chargers win the west 12-4
Denver wild card 11-5

AFC North

This is one of the better divisions in all of football. Or so I thought at the beginning of the season . On paper they should be. You've got the defending chumpian err champian Steelers, the high flying Cincinnati Bengals, and the always steady Baltimore Ravens. After a heart breaking loss this week to drop them to 4-4 on the season , Cincy is looking desperate. They need a win that will not come this week in San Diego. Which means they will need to run the table afterwards to get in the dance. They have a very difficult road ahead of them, and i don't see that happening. The Steelers are coming apart at the seams and will not make the playoffs. They too would need to run the table to get in, and that's not happening. They have no running game. Ben is playing like a guy who got his face smashed in by a cadillac. Their defense scares no one anymore. I'm thinking that they should have paid Von Olhaffen(sp). Nose tackles that can play the 3-4 are a rare commodity, but I digress. That brings us to the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are a legitimate contender if they get some consistency on offense. With Steve McNair under center it's just a matter of time before that offense start producing like they are capable of doing. Will it be in enough time to make some noise though?

Baltimore wins the North 11-5

AFC South.

This division is all about the Indianapolis Colts. Peyton Manning , Reggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison and the rookie Joey Addai. The defense stepped it up and kept the pressure on Tommy Boy's receivers last night and forced him into making critical mistakes. It was an ugly win for the colts , but a win just the same. The only bright spot for Houston is that David Carr is actually turning into a good qb. Amazing what you can learn from the guy who was John Elway's QB coach. That's about it for the Texans. Jacksonville however seems to be legit. Their defense is very good. Their receivers are giants. Not a one of them under 6'2" I believe. Garrad has officially won the starting job , even if Jack Del Rio doesn't want to admit it. They are my other wild card team.

Indy takes the South 14-2
Jax takes the wildcard 10-6

AFC East.

Once the mightiest division in all of pro football. Now a shadow of it's former self. Buffalo has shown promise in flashes. but that is it. Miami seems to be playing better with some consistency at QB. Harrington is playing well for them. but their record will keep them from the playoffs. Had the Jets won against Cleveland a week ago , I might be choosing them as my dark horse wild card team. Instead I had to go with Jacksonville. This division of course belongs to the New England Patriots. Surprise, I know. But I believe that you can get to them and it will be a rough season for them .

Patriots win the east at 11-5

For some unknown reason I don't see Detroit on your playoff list.

Oh, you aren't including junior high teams. Gotcha.

Give them a couple years. Hopefully Kitna won't be too old by then.

Chargers vs Giants in the super bowl

That's a gutsy prediction. I'd love to see the Chargers but I can't see them beating either Indy or NE in the playoffs. But then I'd love to see the 'Aints in there instead of the Giants too... That's not gonna happen either. :D

I wanted to say Indy , BUT they have yet to get there. The Chargers have LT and plenty of play makers , and are just a bit more consistent than the colts.

The Giants, i think have all the intangibles. I'd love to see the saints as well, but i don't think that's gonna happen this year. Soon though. The Giants have what it takes to beat the Bears I think. A defense that gets after the qb. When that happens, Grossman turns the ball over. and an opportunistic offense. Now that I picked them though these teams will probably choke and die before my eyes.

I think she was crying about losing to Denver.

Didn't that game set a record for fumbles in a single game? It sure seemed that way.

The Browns, with their top 4 cornerbacks injured and a complete nonentity as quarterback, played San Diego even for 3 quarters yesterday. Plus, when it comes to the clutch, don't forget who's coaching San Diego. No one in Ohio has.

i was mash pitting in the houston dynamo's game yesterday. good times.

It was painful to watch.

The time management of Steelers was awesome. The no huddle offence really did give the Denver D trouble.

Oh I know . I know that San Diego is a ballsy call. I just have a hunch this year is Marty's. I have nothing to base this on however, but I'm still picking them.

That took more thought than i usually give to this place. Believe it or not it actually feels like I did something worthwhile with a day I spent in my pajamas. :D

SportsLine.com has a writing job waiting for you!

Seriously, I'm impressed with all this, kowboy! I first thought you were copy/pasting until you mentioned games from last night plus your spin on words that only you can muster up.

But what was that about the Chargers being a bit more consistent than the Colts?

The Colts are once again undefeated this season. You even called last night's win an "ugly win" for them. Personally, I thought it was beautiful and any team that can keep going undefeated (the way they have) is pretty much consistent. Hmmm, perhaps I'm just biased. ;)
