Soul candy . . .

Spending an insane amount of time driving to the remotest parts of the county - just so that I can sit out in the middle of nowhere, with no cars, no buildings and no people.

The latest was a hidden part of the estuary at night - millions of stars (some shooting) above me, bats wheeling overhead, the sound of the water rippling against the banks and bird cries echoing up the waterway.

this kind of candy doesn't even rot your teeth...

 Falling asleep in her arms, my head on her soft breasts, as she slowly strokes my back and tells me she loves me.

Great books, great music, great food, and the company of wonderful women (men too, but I DO prefer the fair sex to some extent). :D

I have to agree with your choices! Add a bottle of red wine and we are set for a great evening...

(PS like your AV choice-pulls collar away from neck and fans self)

Hell yes! Glad that my AV had the desired effect, lol.

The Impressionist galleries at the Art Institute of Chicago. The paintings are so beautiful, so touching, so evocative that I actually get all choked up. I'm not narrow minded, though: I can be moved by any of the great art of the West, from the early Renaissance through post Impressionism. The art of other cultures also, but I am of the West so its works resonate almost easily.

In his book Human Accomplishment Charles Murray described the elements that he believes are most productive of that thing. The creators of art that moves me all lived in societies that shared these elements. They include the Aristotlean virtues of purpose, autonomy, and "transcendental goods."

Purpose: "The belief that life has a purpose and that the function of life is to fulfill that purpose."

Autonomy: "The belief that individuals can act efficaciously as individuals."

Transcendental goods: "A well-articulated vision of, and use of, the transcendental goods relevant to that domain." These include a sense of goodness, truth, and beauty, all in the classical sense.

It might be that these things are what move me, and this happens when I encounter art that is the product of them. They are not just my soul's candy, but its sustenance.

The amount of time and care and effort that you put into considering how I feel is so incredibly wonderful. Thank you, soul candy.
