Sorting My Stories

I appreciate the facility to have stories in a series displayed together, but many of my stories predate that change and have titles that aren't alphabetically or numerically consecutive. That can be confusing to readers.

It even confused me this year. I posted substantially the same story twice, in April as 'Escaping Cybele' and later in July as 'Limit of Authority' because I had forgotten that I had already completed and posted it.

I have decided to retitle some of my stories particularly those about Tripletit and Caroline, the inflatable device artist, so that they will appear in reading order.

To do this I have created a fairly obvious alt - oggbashantoo - and will start reposting some of my stories. They will not be NEW, but will have amended titles so that they appear properly.

I will be leaving my original postings as oggbashan because they show the date of first posting, which, in the UK and Europe at least, is sufficient evidence to assert my copyright date. Another reason for leaving the originals is that many people have linked to some of my stories. If I change the title in oggbashan's list, those links will no longer work.

What I would like, if it becomes possible in a site update, is a facility to put stories into folders, and to amend the file name to order the stories within those folders.

So - if you see a number of oggbashan stories reposted as oggbashantoo - they won't be new; they won't be oggbashantoo plagiarising oggbashan; they will be oggbashan's stories sorted into a logical reading order.

Have you PM'ed Laurel to see if she can do something about the reordering?

No - because although she might be able to, that might destroy people's existing links.

What I SHOULD have done is think about consecutive titles when writing more in a series. I had tried, using alphabetical titles e.g. Brigit, Brigit Too, Brigit's Babies but the system failed on the apostrophe.

If I had started Brigit 01; Brigit 02 etc, I wouldn't have the problem but I didn't think I was writing chaptered stories but stand-alone stories in a series using the same characters.

How about editing the stories with a list of the ones in the series in order at the start of the page? I've seen that several times in older series.

I had already done that for some, but some recent feedback and comments, particularly on my Tripletit series suggest that readers are still confused.

I feel for you oggbashan, I have only 22 stories and have been regretting doing a better job of sorting, or at least coming up with a better system of titles.

I recently re-titled my first story to include it in the same series as the follow on stories. I wish I had thought to have favorited it and saved the url so I could see if they still took me to the new title. I just can't imagine what a hassle you're going through. You have my sympathy.

But I can see how your readers will like it much better with all the stories in order. I know when I first started reading on lit, long before I got an ID, how I hunted around the descriptions and posting dates on several authors, you included, so I could read the related stories in order.

Good luck and if you come up with new ideas please let us know.

I have just been reviewing my three Brigit stories, all of which were posted in 2004.

They all have system generated tags, some of which are almost meaningless, and are unlikely search parameters. I could sort out the tags as well.

I just tried something.

I recently changed the title of my first story "A Bad Vibe" to just "Bad Vibe". I did it because on the sequel I entitled it "Bad Vibe: Aftermath" - leaving out the "A". Being new I didn't find out until recently that it was possible to change the title and just kept using the "Bad Vibe" without the "A" for subsequent stories in the series.

So just after my previous post in this thread I went to my author's page and I was going to copy the URL at the bottom of the story. My plan was to copy the URL and then change it by adding the "A" to see if it would lead to the story anyway.

And guess What? Lit kept the URL as the original "A Bad Vibe" as you can see in the copy and past from my author page. They changed the name at the top. But kept the original URL at the bottom. So I"m guessing a name change will re-order the stories, but keep the links intact.

edited: Doh. That's just what Patientlee just said.

Bad Vibe A young man rescues an attractive MILF.

I changed the title of Lost Agnes from F4 Lost Agnes to F/V Lost Agnes. The link remained the same. http://www.literotica.com/s/f4-lost-agnes

I'd ask Laurel, but I don't think it will mess up your links.

Also, we have the ability to change those links. Track the existing URL for any you're going to title edit, and then change them back to the original via your submission panel if they do get modified by the title edit.

You can do a tag edit and a title edit in the same submission.

Thank you all for the responses above.

I seems that oggbashantoo might not be wholly necessary except that it would help me sort out in my own mind which story series need completing or extending.

I have had two possible Brigit stories stalled for years because I couldn't think of a title that would appear in the right order.

My own confusion about 'Escaping Cybele' and 'Limit Of Authority' kick-started my review. I have hundreds of part complete stories on my hard drive (and backed up!). If I can forget that I have actually finished one, readers could easily be confused too.

My excuse for two almost identical stories was that I upgraded computers between the first story being posted and the second. "Escaping Cybele" was misfiled when copying from the one computer to the new one. I found the incomplete "Limit Of Authority" and finished it - again!

I am in a different pickle myself. I have new, improved versions of a gay male story, Confronting His Lies, that I wrote with my wife/slave Amasterfound and I decided that I want to take down my old stuff and put the new stuff under her name. It might improve her overall scores and give her a few more red Hs. So I've contacted Laurel about that. Either way, the person not officially credited would be credited in the author's note, as before.

A related question

I've got a related question. It is probably an obvious one, but I can't get my head around it for some reason.

How does Lit sort alphabetically? I know a title that starts with a b will go after an a. But what I'm wondering is how about titles that start with "A xyz" relate to titles that start with "An xyz"?

For instance, willl all "A" titles come before any "An" titles. eg. will "A Nation" come before "An Ability"?

I can only answer from my list of stories beginning with 'A' -

A Year and A Day
Absorbed
Ancient Liberties
Auditions

And all my stories starting with 'The' precede the one starting 'Three'.

So, I think you are right.

I have submitted my three Brigit stories as Brigit 01, 02, and 03 with an initial note that they are not new, and are repostings of the original oggbashan stories of 2004.

I will leave the submissions of oggbashantoo as just those three for a while to see whether there are any unfortunate responses from anonymouse...

Thanks a lot.

The first three stories were rejected for being duplicates.

I have now resubmitted them under oggbashan as edited - just to change the titles and to correct a couple of typos in what was Brigit's Babies and should now become Brigit Pt.03.

oggbashantoo might be used for experimental stories, but will probably remain a rarely used (and obvious) alt.
