Sorry, Another Question, This About Notes

The writer's intent is to share a note left behind by a character, and thereby reveal the character's own style of writing, which is casual and grammatically incorrect. Any ideas how to best proceed when punctusation is lacking?

The passage:

I returned home to attend matters I spoke of

Chicken in oven done by 6 or finish on bbq Mac salad in fridge Corn needs cooking Snacks in cupboard

George and Cindy Stay as long as you wish There is ample food Any problems arising my family can assist

James and Jen Drinking and driving especially on bikes is no good Stay here at least overnight

Last ones leaving not today please lock up and leave key at the store I won't be back up for a period of time so
kindly take or dispose of any fish or other perishables

Tom and Mary have been advised of all so relax and enjoy They will They are going dancing tonight in Allingham

Put it in quotes, indent, or italics. Besides that, leave it alone. Things a character writes are not subject to editing.

I would go for the italics myself.

Quotation marks would make it look like normal dialogue and might be confusing.

"Indent" is nice, or "Center" in square brackets. With a real publisher, or a less restricted board, I would change the fount to something like Comic Sans MS which looks like handwriting but is legible.

I had a change of heart. Even if you're having a character write something, if the message doesn't get across, it has to be redone such that your editor can understand it. Reminds me of back in the days Dungeons and Dragons for a plot I was running; I wrote one side of a note and read it to the crew. They understood the concept of it being only one side of a note, but when I gave them the other half, none of them understood what the fuck it was supposed to mean: FAIL.

The grammar can suck, capitalization doesn't have to function, but the words involved have to be all in the right... It's probably pretty damn obvious, so I thinks I should shut up and get back to knitting my socks.

Can you show either indent or center on Lit.? I thought everything went flush left.

If so, italics seems the way to go to denote a note. (with an extra line feed above and below it to set it off visually)

Okay, thanks. The writer did use Comic Sans, so the font is set off from the other text. But thenit will have to be uploaded and not pasted to preserve this formatting, I believe. Thanks all.

I think you can center, at least, I've done it with asterisks to denote a scene change. I'd be interested to know if you can indent. That would be handy for situations just like this one, where you want to show a note or a letter.

There is a way. I have a poem centered in a piece. But when I did it, I had something wrong. I'm not sure if I kept Laurel's instructions or if they were on the PC that died.

OK. If you submit as .txt copied and pasted into the box provided, and you have done your own formatting, as far as I know the <center> and <indent> tags work as:
<indent>this text will be indented</indent> produces:

this text will be indented​

and
<center>this text will be centred</center> produces:

this text will be centred.​

As far as I know there are few others which work (bold, italic, underline).

If you submit as MSWord .doc most of the formatting will vanish, as will all the font changes.

I believe that the tab on the start of each line will also be stripped out however you post it.

<indent>, </indent> doesn't seem to work. I just tried it. The others (center, bold, italic, underline) do work. So I guess the only way to get an indent would be to post the submission as an attachment, rather than paste into the box?
