LovetoGiveRoses said:PP, you probably know how the Roman fire brigades used to work. Maybe that's what they want to return to in Britannia. Have there been any dangerous fires in ye olde Londinium yet?
What are they demanding? We saw some news about the strike, but not a lot of detail.
p_p_man said:The government's brought out from mothballs these very old fire engines (well they were very old when used in the last firemens' strike 25 years ago, so now they'll be ancient) which are known as Green Goddesses because of their colour.
They're manned by the military which means that police cars have to guide them through the London traffic as the stand-in firemen don't know their way around.
The very first fire was a car which burnt itself out.
They're demanding 40% to bring their wages up from ÂŁ20,000 to around ÂŁ30,000 in line with the other emergency services.
So you see what with all that AND the Royal Family to deal with we're just far too busy to go to war...
But best of luck on your mission...
Meanwhile back to untangling my hosepipe...

Ishmael said:Maybe Tony will use Reagan's solution to strikes by public employee's. It works.

p_p_man said:It did with Reagan but Tony's party is still tied to the Unions, the Paymasters.
Less and less as the Unions withdraw their funding from New Labour but there are still enough Union sponsored Members of Parliament to make waves...

android1966 said:According to speculation in British newspapers Tony's actually likely to ask the Queen this coming week to issue an order for mobilisation. The last time this was issued was 1950 for the Korean war. Only a partial mobilisation would be necessary to replace the troops tied up in firefighters strike. The mobilised reserves would replace the troops in non critical postings such as Germany or Cyprus etc. The regular troops freed by this would join the armoured division already earmarked for possible use in Iraq and the men manning the green goddesses would stay where they are. Voila.

I didn't want to tell them that...
