Any good ones out there?

I did the gargling with salt water thing... but it's still killing me :(

I'm willing to try (almost) anything at this point...

Southern Comfort ... straight.

Will deaden anything.

Hot tea sometimes works.

I usually go through lots of coughdrops when I get one. Occasionally I use whiskey, but that is more for the forgetfullness than the pain relief. Choroseptic works, but wears off after awhile.

I like the chloroseptic sore throat strips. They numb your throat.

It might sound weird, but for me it's those little peppermint candies. You know, the red and white ones. They help me with that.

Hot tea ... with honey to help coat. Hot Rum Toddies (rum with hot water and honey) work as well... the rum working as Fool said. Sleep .. and perhaps antibiotics are probably the only other things that will help.

If it's really bad, you may want to go to the doctor to check for strep or another type of infection. Last time I had an unbearably sore throat it was strep and I waited so long that i had to take pain pills just to swallow water. Don't wait. :(

You can also dissolve aspirin in hot/warm water and gargle with it; hot tea with honey is easier to drink but doesn't do much for the soreness. If it's too swollen or too hard to drink, go to the dr. That's how I ended up in the hospital last year- my tonsils were so swollen I couldn't swallow.

well I had four antibiotic pills left from my last infection (I know, bad girl! *spank*) so I took one of those... just in case... I'll finish the rest and see if those and echinachea can kick it, if it's bacterial...

Tea is a good idea... hadn't thought of that... duh! I don't know if I can do alcohol... I'm a lightweight...

Maybe I'll have the hubbie stop and get some of that Chloraseptic stuff after work tomorrow if it's still this bad... :(

Thanks you guys...

Here's a Mexican one. More for discomfort than a cure, however, removing the discomfort is often on the way to a cure. Squeeze limon juice (fresh) into a couple of tablespoons of honey. Mix and consume. First time I heard that I was sure the acidic juice would play H with my throat. Not sure why, but it works.

Back in my band days, the singers always used hot tea with lemon and honey to soothe their throats...

Be sure to get the Chloraseptic ones. The cough medicine ones taste horrid!

Up North, we use Brandy, but the idea is the same. It works better for when you're hoarse (hence the saying, "a little something to cut the phlegm"), but as long as you're not driving anywhere or breathing on clients, it's as good an excuse as any for a shot or two. ;)

Just warm water and honey. dissolve a generous spoon of honey in some warm water (warm enough to drink but quite hot-you know what I mean) and drink. It's lovely.

Gargling with a couple of drops of tea tree oil in water. It tastes like shit, but works very, very well.

Chamomile tea with honey is the best tasting and effective too. Also do the hot salt water gargles.

Milk with Tabasco (yes, it sounds disgusting and tastes just as bad), followed by hot tea with honey and as little use of your throat as possible. Yes, this includes oral sex (*sigh*).

Three Teaspoons pre-sweetened Lemon Kool-aid + One Teaspoon of Honey + one whole Clove + one cup boiling water = a throat soothing cheap substitute for Chloroseptic throat spray or lozenges. Let the clove steep until cool enough to drink, but drink it as hot as you can stand.

Cloves Oil is a natural local anesthetic but don't use ground cloves without straining them out before drinking -- you want just the clove oil; clove particles are too intense and will cause burning and gagging if the get stuck to the throat lining.

I apologise if someone else has already suggested this, but hot milk, large tablespoon of honey, topped up with a very generous slosh of Bailey's Irish Cream liqueur. At the very least you will become too pissed to care ;) Tastes yummy and is very soothing. :rose:

Sore throats are horrible so you have my sympathy. I almost end up looking forward to the blocked nose and evil sinus pain. I say almost...

It depends on if your throat is just sore, if you are coughing (which makes it hurt), or if it's swollen and uncomfortable. All the above suggestions are promising, but I'll add an unusual one. Cream of chicken soup (not broth) and Pepsi. The combination of salt, acid and sugar help clear your throat for a decent amount of time. It also gives you a short term boost in energy. This is mostly for when your throat is swollen (much like salt water, but it works deeper). The best part is, you can try it and if it doesn't work, you can still try the medicinal ones (although the alcoholic ones sound cool to me :D ).

Or do this and add half a cup of boiled hot water - Makes a soothing drink and it's antiseptic.

Most throats are viral and Selena... very naughty of you not to finish those anti-biotics last time... that way resistant strains of bacteria lie...

Oh and no matter what - lots of liquids. Juice, water, tea - whatever. And keep taking painkillers as often as it says you can on the packet. Take them *before* it starts to hurt again... it's preventative.

Ditto what drksideofthemoon said. Hot tea with honey and lemon. My grandmother gave it to me often. She also mixed honey and lemon with a shot of whiskey.

I know I know I was a bad girl  But I did better than usual... only 4 left instead of half the bottle...

course now I'm regretting it, because I think the antibiotics are working... I can swallow today! yay! (hey... don't even think it... I'm not THAT better! *grin*)

Guess I have to go see a doc... I hate that. Well maybe echinachea and all these remedies and 4 antibiotic pills will work and I won't have to deal with my drphobia this week...

I had NO idea there were this many remedies for sore throats! My mother sucked! sheesh. that's what I get for living with a Christian Scientist!

I tried the tea and honey last night... it felt great... I think it took some of the swelling down... (along with the ice cream :) ) but then the "pokies" came back... it was hard to sleep... (alcohol prolly would have helped with that huh?) but when I finally did and woke up this morning, the "pokies" were better... not gone, but bettern...

gonna go make more tea... think I can eat ice cream for breakfast?

(and Sche... tea tree oil? really? *gulp* I can imagine that taste AWFUL :( blech)

i can't imagine that eating icecream for breakfast could be any worse than a bowl of frosted flakes. :)

They give ice cream for people who had their tonsils out ... it must have therapeutic properties.

PS: Go to the doctor ... 4 pills is not a full run of antibiotics ... you don't want to have to revive this thread at the end of the week.

they wouldn't give ME ice cream after I got my tonsils out! Only POPSICLES! I was SO mad... I told my dad he had to leave my room because he was the one who told me I'd get ice cream (guess they were still doing ice cream when he was a kid!) I think I was 7??
