Songs that nobody can cover anymore

I can think of two:

Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) - Saw the Dixie Chicks trying to cover this. And yes, I shamefully admit to not immediately changing the channel when surfing into a Dixie Chicks video (not as unbearable as most modern country, and a couple of them were pretty cute...think that's down to one now). They butcher it pretty badly, but the point is probably moot (go Rick!) because the Pumpkins did such a distinct homage, and Billy Corgan just about out-Stevie Nick-ed Stevie Nicks. Nobody needs to try again.

Wild Horses (Stones) - because after the Sundays did it so flawlessly, everyone else is covering them just as much as the Stones. Nobody can touch Harriet Wheeler's voice. Tori Amos does some inspired covers, Jewel doesn't, but they should both not do this one anymore.

I love the Sunday's version of Wild Horses....ALMOST as much as the original.

I usually enjoy hearing a favorite song of mine covered by another band. But I do agree that there are times when I cringe and think, "WHY???!!!"

check out "come as you are" by "the king"

a northern irish elvis impersonator covers nirvana in the style of elvis
the album is called gravelands and covers classics by great artists who are all now dead
check it out if you can people

T. Rex (Marc Bolan) originally did "Bang A Gong (get it on)" back in the early 70s and its' been covered by Blondie, Power Station, Boy George and several others and none of them could cut it..

Bolan's voice is what makes the song and it's just to unique for anyone to pull it off.

I heard Bonnie Raitt, or someone who sounds like her, cover "You Got It" by Roy Orbison. I wanted to puke.

TB4p

I absolutely love Cat Power's cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction." It's vastly different from the original (stripped down to the bare minimum of instrumentation, and the chorus is dropped completely). It would seem that offering a different interpretation of a song would be the only valid reason for covering it (otherwise, why bother?), and this song definitely fits that bill.

I play covers because it's fun....
The pressures involved in putting your creation out there to a usually very fickle audience are mighty. Ripping through a song that you like is fun and there is no pressure......if you don't like "lose your love..." blame the Outflield, not me....

Nothing lightens a room like a song that everybody knows and loves.

sorta on topic......the thing that bugs me the most is when hordes of unknown punk bands cover baby boomer standards....

I don't have an example ready unfortunately but imagine the germs doing Rhinstone Cowboy at 1.5 speed. annoying song, annoying band...played out sense of humour....

I totally dug the Outfield.

"Josie's on a vacation far away..."

And just downloaded it...listen to that utter lack of bass.

Ah, the 80's. Off to find a tab and learn to play this puppy.

"james bond lives down my street" should only be sung by the toy dolls.

It's a good track to cover.......it's fun, good, and makes a good acoustic cover tune.....

I want the tabs to Blinded by the Light by Manfred mann..talk about a fun cover to do.....then I might segue right into Baker Street :)

The Ramones "I Wanna Be Sedated"
The Ramones "Rock n Roll High School"
Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit"

"I can't get no satisfaction". Britany Spears did this so perfectly, no other singer or band should ever touch it. The Rolling stones should relinquish the rights to it because they are only bastardizing the song.

Laurel- THe Offspring covered Sedated and it wasn't that bad
(I dl'd the ramones video to that tho', that was sweet)

I prefer Tori Amos' version.

'Eleanor Rigby' has been done numerous times, although each one is pretty good so forget that.

After I heard Britney Spears' version of 'I Love Rock 'N Roll' I wanted to hurl.

Metallica's version of "Turn the Page.

I also liked Cake's version of "I'll Survive."

This thread slays me. How about Straight No Chaser, Thelonious Monk?
Hey, if you're going to pull out the big guns, I'm calling in the cavalry.

What about Salome, Strause? Or Wozzeck, Webern?

The best version of that song I ever heard was DEVO's - incredible. When I saw them first perform it on Saturday Night live it blew me away - hell, it blew everyone away.

Yeah no one can cover the Stones. Way too sophisticated there.

Dweezel Zappa and Ozzy Osbourne doing "I Will Survive" is GREAT!

My own verions of Ravel's Bolero is pretty damn good, if you ask me.

ELP's Picture's At An Exhibition...

Electric Light Orchestra's Roll Over Beethovan...

ALL GREAT!

Oh - and while I'm at it my own cover's of Bowie's "Fashion" and "Let's Dance", The Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows", Oingo Boingo's "No Spill Blood", and Jerry Lee Lewis "Whole Lot of Shakin' Goin'" on are fucking great! *smile*

*laughs* I should hope not. Heavy, heavy early 20th-century German operas.

He ain't heavy, he's Germanic.
