I found this at the AV Club today and of course had to read every article. They ask various musicians what their least favorite song is, and I found some of the conversations pretty funny.

My least favorite song is (I think) David Bowie's "China Girl." I don't know why but I have always loathed it; okay, part of it was the video. I didn't like that, and back when it was popular I probably "saw" it more than I heard it. Still, now if I hear it, I flash back to the video. Even when I try not to, I still don't like the song.

Close seconds on hated songs: "Talking in Your Sleep" and "What I Like about You" by The Romantics.

A song that I really hate is an oldie, "Dock of The Bay. Why I should listen to some idiot whine about his life escapes me.

"MacArthur Park" hands down. (leaving your cake out in the rain, et. al.)

Your question is a little disturbing. I have considered myself a music lover since I was an adolescent, but damn, there are a ton of songs I absolutely hate. I could probably spend the rest of the day listing them.

BTW, I love "China Girl" but never really cared for the video.

"That Thing You Do." Can't stand it. The movie wasn't bad, but the song . . . blech. That it was written by Tom Hanks just makes it worse. :p

Every Rose has its Thorn by Poison.

One of the cheesiest ballads of the hairband era(and somehow the most popular) to this day the shit gets played out of it.

What makes it more annoying is the wife loves it and plays it a lot.

which is when I counter by cranking up the song she thinks is the worst.

"Red, red wine"

I really like that movie, and I think they did a great job capturing that type of music with the new songs they wrote. That said, there are better songs on the soundtrack than the title one.

By Neil Diamond or UB40?

I have to admit I liked Poison, kind of still do enjoy the songs (but rarely hear or play them, which may be why) and I even saw them in concert. If you think Poison was bad, let me tell you that the opening act, Slaughter, was just awful.

I think I may have to add nearly any songs I've heard by BTO. I didn't actually realize how much I disliked them until Mr Penn was playing a greatest hits in the car and I thought, wow, I really don't like these. Not sure it rises to the level of "hate," though. But it's very close.

UB40

I like Poison as well, except for their ballads. Something to Believe in was just as bad.

I saw them at one of the "hairballs" they had at the Comcast center(best known for years as Greatwoods) when I saw them they were with Skid Row and Ratt and Stephen Pearcy sounded like shit.

What kills me is when they all come out with new albums. It's like "You're a greatest hits band, now shut up and play Talk Dirty to me"

BTO is okay for me. I know I will be in the minority, but I cannot stomach U2. There music is vastly over rated(especially "The edge") and Bono has to be the most arrogant person in music. But if you give Justin Bieber time he may get there.

The one song I can't stand (other than anything sung by Taylor Swift, I can't stand her voice) is that one that just repeats the phrase "keep it copacetic" over and over. I will switch the station to AM talk radio before I will sit through that song. I don't even know what the actual title of the song is, but I don't like it.

I prefer the faster songs but can't say the ballads bother me. I suppose I find them amusing, compared to the other songs. I'm not sure Stephen Pearcy sounded that great when Ratt was popular.

I didn't realize how much I didn't like BTO, like I said. But now I know (although I do like the "The Simpsons" where Homer only wants the "working overtime/work out" line). Actually I'd be there with you on U2 for the most part. I like the early stuff (War, Pride) but I still can't stand the stuff from The Joshua Tree, mostly because it was so overplayed.

So my list now: China Girl, What I Like about You, Talking in Your Sleep, almost anything by BTO, Where the Streets Have No Name, whatever the other song was from TJT that got overplayed, and One.

I'll agree with you on Slaughter. Slayer, too. They were both sort of "almost-there" glam rock bands as far as I'm concerned.

Poison did great power ballads. Something to Believe In was probably one of the best in that style. But then, I'm a sucker for 80s hair bands.

Back on topic, can I just say that I can't stand about 95% of rap? :p

I know some of you are around my age, so you must remember some of the remarkable DRECK on the radio in the 70s.

Muskrat Love
Afternoon Delight
Paloma Blanca (or half of everything by ABBA)
Anything by KC and the Sunshine Band (because it all sounds the same anyway)
Vast quantities of early disco
Billy Don't Be a Hero
Torn Between Two Lovers
Seasons in the Sun
Shannon
Undercover Angel

If given a choice between listening to rap or country I would

Slam ice picks into my ears.

As for "Power ballads" there were some good ones

Dokken's alone again for me was the best

Give me back my K-tel vinyl collection :(

Bad Blood, Island Girl, Run Joey Run, the list goes on :)

Oh, and the stuff I hate? Anything by Britany Spears or Justin Beiber, other than that, I'm pretty open.

Shit, this is like a playlist from my Father. He played the hell out of "Torn between two lovers."

Cheesy seventies at their finest or not so finest.

I'm just thankful that the AOR format on FM stations got started about the same time (that's 'album-oriented rock' for the young-uns). It's hard to believe that the likes of Aerosmith, Bad Company, and Bob Seger were coming into being at the same time as the other crap.

But notice who lasted.

"MacArthur Park" hands down. (leaving your cake out in the rain, et. al.)

Depending upon who sings it, I reckon it's not too bad.

My hate list would be:

Anything recorded by Pajamarama (the best talent-free mob)
Any RAP crap
Almost any regae

Una paloma blanca

"Khe Sanh" by Cold Chisel (Australian pub-rock band led by Jimmy Barnes). Not inherently a bad song, but horribly horribly overplayed; you couldn't listen to MMM for more than fifteen minutes without hearing Cold Chisel.

Eventually they hired Barnes as a DJ. I thought "this is going to be even worse" but he turned out to be a really good DJ who played a wide range of interesting stuff and gave us a rest from his own material.

And here I've been wondering what songs I really hated... You pretty much spelled it out for me!

Except Muskrat Love, don't fucking ask me why I like that one.

I have a long list of songs that I dislike, though-- I just don't remember them, that's my way of dealing with the horrible feelings. Because if I remember any song, I hear it.

Thriller - So overrated and around Halloween you can't escape it. The video does nothing for me either.

Ah, but those songs are all "high school" to me.

The one I don't like: "Proud Mary". I used to pay the bands not to play that song when I was bartending. It's not that I don't like the song as much as I dislike the way it's played most of the time. "You Light Up My Life" is another one. Fingernails on the blackboard. And that Peter Frampton song where he does that scary thing with the amplifier. I'd look it up but I might accidentally hear some of it. *shudders*

Does anyone still hate "Stairway to Heaven?"

Or have we all progressed to a misty-eyed remembrance of why the song was so damn overplayed?
