Okay so I stripped the carbs off the Beast on Friday. I haven't been able to work on them until today because of minor little inconviences like work and family.

I get things set up and start taking the buggers apart. Number one and it's attendant parts come apart easily even though they are gunked to hell. We're talking gunk in both the upper half and the lower, Float Valve half. Lot's of gunk in #1. I clean it and put all the parts in a small basin labeled #1. As I'm working on it I have a bit of gas coming out. Nothing to get alarmed about even though I'm not lighting any Cigars. It's nice and clean.

I shift over to #4. This is the one that corresponds to the bad cyl. Again it's gunked to hell. We're talking a nice layer of sludge in the bowl as well as in the upper half. I had to clean the parts from this Carb twice to get them clean. Hmmmmm, I'm wondering why I'm having trouble with the bike?

Once again I have gas coming out of the carbs. Now it's a nasty looking brownish color. Not good.

I put the parts for #4 in their own little plastic container and label it with all the information I'm going to need to put it back together.

It's getting dark out by now and I haven't put up a work light. The wife is telling me she wants to have dinner. I decide I'm just going to loosen the screws holding things together and call it a night.

#3 loosens up without a problem. #2 on the other hand gets me cursing a blue streak. I'm shocking the neighbors and the cats are hiding. Two seperate screws strip out because they are so rusty. This is not a good thing right now. (But it may be a good thing later on.) KNowing me and my temper I prudently stop working and put my tools away.

The screws that hold the covers in place look like normal steel machine screws. I'll take a sample of each and go down to the local True Value tomorrow and see if they have matching screws. If they do then I'll buy enough to replace all of them. (All have at least a little rust on them.)

Once I get the carbs stripped and the internal parts cleaned then I'm going to both soak and then hose out the Carb. Bodies. These suckers will be clean.

The good part so far is all of the O Rings and Gaskets so far look good, as do the jets once I clean them.

Maybe I can get away with just cleaning these suckers and not replacing parts this time.

On the other hand I already have new plugs gapped and set to the side. I also have a short list of things to recheck and/or repair on the engine before I put it back together.

I will be rechecking the Compression on all four Cyl.'s. I will be replacing the Tach Cable. (Now that I can get to it.) I will be checking the wiring for the plugs and sealing any cracks in them. I will be draining and cleaning the tank. I will also be cleaning the engine and changing the oil and filter. (What the hell, it's not running right now so I might as well.)

Hopefully I'll have the beast back on the road soon.

Man I hate it when screws strip out.

You'll probably have to mess around for a bit getting everything right - if the bike's been tuned to run with gunk encrusted carbs, you can bet it's not gonna run right on those settings with clean ones.

Stripping screws is a pain, breaking off head studs is worse, and worse yet is breaking the ezy-out off in the busted off stud... man, the language!! :D

God starr, you make me so hot when you talk like that! :D

Cat, you and your wife should go inside the house when you start getting that heated up and horny, or do something else, maybe some mechanical work on your motorcycle or somethin.

You are correct of course, both about the possible need for resynching the Carbs. as well as the language.

I did get the screws out of the Carbs this morning and finished cleaning the jets, floats etc.

I'm waiting to hear from Honda as well as a couple of other people who have this kind of bike to find out if I have to seperate the Carbs to clean the bodies or if I can do it with them in a group. (I'm hoping I don't have to seperate them.)

The most incredible language I have heard and/or used was when my father and I were changing the Head Gasket on my mini van. We did snap the Head Stub, in fact we snapped it off 1/4 inch beneath the top of the Heads. We tried an easy out and it wasn't doing the job. My father was all for giving up and drilling it out then retapping the Heads. (Not fun but I've done it more than once.)

Instead I told him to give me one more chance with it. I hit it heavy with the Rust Breaker. I filled the hole in the top of the Heads, and did it again when that had seeped in. The next morning I drilled down through the middle of the stud and did a reverse tap in it. (The stud was four inches long at that point and I drilled/tapped it 3 1/2 inches.) I threaded a hardened steel rod and threaded that into place. (The top end of the rod was also threaded and I put a couple of rather large nuts on it. These were all of 1 inch about the heads.)

When this was ready I broke out the hammer as well as the blow torch. I heated the rod until the nuts were glowing then stopped. After doing this several times I grabbed the hammer and started tapping the rod. After doing this several times I let the rod cool and then attached a Box Wrench with a breaker bar and popped it out nice and easy.

Did you read the part about his nuts were glowing? Not to mention a bunch of stuff about "head"!
