Okay so I stripped the carbs off the Beast on Friday. I haven't been able to work on them until today because of minor little inconviences like work and family.
I get things set up and start taking the buggers apart. Number one and it's attendant parts come apart easily even though they are gunked to hell. We're talking gunk in both the upper half and the lower, Float Valve half. Lot's of gunk in #1. I clean it and put all the parts in a small basin labeled #1. As I'm working on it I have a bit of gas coming out. Nothing to get alarmed about even though I'm not lighting any Cigars. It's nice and clean.
I shift over to #4. This is the one that corresponds to the bad cyl. Again it's gunked to hell. We're talking a nice layer of sludge in the bowl as well as in the upper half. I had to clean the parts from this Carb twice to get them clean. Hmmmmm, I'm wondering why I'm having trouble with the bike?
Once again I have gas coming out of the carbs. Now it's a nasty looking brownish color. Not good.
I put the parts for #4 in their own little plastic container and label it with all the information I'm going to need to put it back together.
It's getting dark out by now and I haven't put up a work light. The wife is telling me she wants to have dinner. I decide I'm just going to loosen the screws holding things together and call it a night.
#3 loosens up without a problem. #2 on the other hand gets me cursing a blue streak. I'm shocking the neighbors and the cats are hiding. Two seperate screws strip out because they are so rusty. This is not a good thing right now. (But it may be a good thing later on.) KNowing me and my temper I prudently stop working and put my tools away.
The screws that hold the covers in place look like normal steel machine screws. I'll take a sample of each and go down to the local True Value tomorrow and see if they have matching screws. If they do then I'll buy enough to replace all of them. (All have at least a little rust on them.)
Once I get the carbs stripped and the internal parts cleaned then I'm going to both soak and then hose out the Carb. Bodies. These suckers will be clean.
The good part so far is all of the O Rings and Gaskets so far look good, as do the jets once I clean them.
Maybe I can get away with just cleaning these suckers and not replacing parts this time.
On the other hand I already have new plugs gapped and set to the side. I also have a short list of things to recheck and/or repair on the engine before I put it back together.
I will be rechecking the Compression on all four Cyl.'s. I will be replacing the Tach Cable. (Now that I can get to it.) I will be checking the wiring for the plugs and sealing any cracks in them. I will be draining and cleaning the tank. I will also be cleaning the engine and changing the oil and filter. (What the hell, it's not running right now so I might as well.)
Hopefully I'll have the beast back on the road soon.
Man I hate it when screws strip out.
