We had a story making the rounds here in the hospital today. One that makes me at least be thankfull for the sense of humor of some of our doctors and Nurses.
It seems a patient came into the E.R. last evening complaining of intractable pain. He complained of hip pain so severe he couln't move out of bed. He insisted upn arrival that he be given Morphine and admitted to the hospital.
He moaned and screamed from his pain, and yet he somehow managed to crawl out of his stretcher and make his way [past security to get outside and spark up a joint and have a beer with his friends. (He did this not once but twice during the course of the night.) He also complained about not being treated correctly, threatening to contat the state because the E.R. Staff wouldn't run across the street to get him some food from the Burger King there. (He also complained about the hospital food even though he kept calling the kitchen and ordering trays.)
Well the Doctors finally caught on to this guy. The had entered his name into the hospitals computer and received his records from a sister hospital. (One that he lived closer to but refused to go to which is a patients right.) They read his history and saw just how often he did this. Seeing this they ran another Tox Screen on him which of course came back positive for both Canibinoids and Alchohol.
They started watching him and saw how he kept dippin into his bag. They glanced into the bag and found more than a couple of bottles of beer, as well as other types of Hooch. They also saw a bag filled with what looked like Oregano.
(Gee, he didn't mention being a chef.)
Now their senses of humor kicked in. They informed him that he would indeed have to be admitted to the hospital, while administering a rather large dose of Diuretics through his I.V. Oh now he was starting to get uhappy, he was pising his brains out. Then they informed him that because of his condition they were limiting his food and fluid intake. He was put on a clear liquid diet and limited to 1000 cc's every 24 hours. They also informed him his clothing and personal belongings would be placed in safe keeping in the security office.
He quickly left the hospital while stating that he would be contacting the state about his treatment, and he would never return to the hospital. Oh and he walked out quite easily with no signs of pain.
