Sometimes...

*Sigh.*

Sometimes...

Well, sometimes I just wish I were straight.

:(

There was some group of guys this morning posting hate posters and doing some press conference all about how gays are evil and it's the Latter Day Saints that'll rid the world of them and how only servants of the devil would dare to go against god's word and...and...and...

...and I sound like a complete crybaby. I wouldn't have brought it up, but I just saw the video on the late-night news...

*Cries and hates the straight world.*

Why can't people just accept us? I mean me and Brianna both (and Rachel, even, and nothing ever happens to her) were getting all kinds of shit from everybody - I finally quit answering the door or the telephone, and it finally stopped around seven tonight...but still...

Rachel even got egged and had to mop up her floor because the guys doing it chased her to her house...and she's bi! Jeez...

I hate straight people.

:(

But you can't be straight! Then you would be the one throwing the eggs.

Where did this happen?

I'm sorry you had to go through with this. Just remember that most straight people are really bi and just afraid to admit to it. Also you wouldn't want to be straight because then you might be just like them.

I accept you and i am sorry for the idiots of the world!

Sam is right. That's a hate crime, and if they're throwing eggs - gods above only know what's next. You need to take a stand on this.

Yeah, I know. I've always carried pepper spray, so I'm good. I don't like guns, though, or I'd own one. Crossbows are okay, though - but I doubt the cops would appreciate me walking down the street with one strapped to my thigh like some medieval bandit. LOL But we're not moving, though. Brianna and I love this house, which her parents bought for her like ten years ago (and then she moved in when she was eighteen, and then I moved in with her when we got together). But yeah, we reported the bastards.

While it sucks tremendously that this happened to you, if you "hate the straight world," it makes you no better than they are.

There are some people out there...all they can do is hate.
If they didn't hate gays, they'd hate blacks.
If they didn't hate blacks, they'd hate jews.
If they didn't hate jews, they'd their family.

and so on.

How would being straight fix the situation? Would you still be the same person, who was interested in rights for same-sex couples? Like Vail just said, people who hate don't care who you are inside - plenty of straight people who have spoken out for gay rights have also been the victims of anti-gay hate crimes.

How can you prevent this from happening in the future? Extremely butch women will probably always get pegged as dykes whether they are or not, but femme lesbians can very easily turn "invisible" in a pressure situation. I have written essays about the problem of femme invisibility, because it is a real pain in the ass for those of us who live with it every day, but it can also be useful if you are being attacked. I believe in integrity to yourself and visibility to the public but I also believe in saving your own skin. If somebody is chasing you and saying HEY LESBIAN I'M GONNA KILL YOU there is absolutely no shame in turning around and saying "but I'm not gay!" It's about self-preservation. If you're with your girlfriend and you're in a hostile situation, stop holding hands, don't kiss, etc. If you are femme, you have an easy getaway that will keep you from getting your ass kicked. (Again, if you are butch...take self-defense classes because they WILL hound you.)

Maybe it's because I live in a major city (Washington DC) with a rather liberal population, but I don't see any reason to hate "the straight world." Don't focus on "the establishment" at times like these...focus on individuals. How many wonderful, kind, gentle straight people do you know? How many assholes attacked you today? I bet the proportion is pretty different. It's not "the straight world" that has a problem with gay people, it's idiot individuals.

Why can't people just accept us? I think it's mostly about religion. Most of the people who can't accept gay people feel it's against God to put two people of the same sex together. Some of them feel sorry for you and want to save you (*cough* my uncle *cough*) and some of them think you're deliberately affronting God and therefore you should be punished. Religion is the cause for a great deal of the hate that happens around the globe every day. They can't accept us because they don't want to accept us, they don't even want to know us. I have a couple of friends who think same-sex marriage is wrong, but they still think I should be able to get married to the woman I've shared my life with almost 10 years. They know me, I am a real person. But people who can't accept us don't want to know us, they don't want to realize that we love our partners just as they love theirs, they don't want to see us as valid human people. They're closed minded and they like it that way, for the most part.

I am a little confused though about where you, Brianna, and Rachel were when this attack was going on. You referred to having to stop answering the door/phone, and you referred to Rachel getting egged at her house and mopping her floor. How many people were doing this, what part of town or campus or whatever were you in when this happened, and how long did it last? The way you've described it - especially the part about it being on the evening news - has left me confused. Can you explain a little more about what happened, now that you might be feeling better?

Hey, if it was the Latterday Saints, their silly anyway. (I get fed up with them rapping on my door). Right up there with the J Witnesses and Scientologists, but I can understand why you got upset. Glad you reported them as idiots like that need the boom lowered on them occasionally just to remind them such things shouldn't be tolerated in todays age.

Hearing shit like this only gives me more reason to want every Christian on Earth to be put up against a wall and shot.

I'm sorry Programmer Cat, but i'm a Christian and i'm transgender generalizing all christians as bible thumping hate mongers is just as wrong as them generalizing that all glbt people are evil affronts to god.

to also add on top of what Etoile was saying not only are they idiots in the first place for refusing to accept things about the glbt community they are also oblivious to the science behind it all. All things in science point towards the belief that we all know to be true with ourselves that we are born this way. and just to give you proof on the matter the American Medical Association has just approved that all Trans doctors/ nurses/ and patients be treated with the same standards and care as anyone else and they have also made the recommendation to the insurance companies that they start covering our medical needs. The world is changing for the better for all of us slowly but we have to keep fighting and keeping it in the forefront or the progress will stop and we will always be second class citizens.

As a bisexual ex-Christian, I'm surprised that you would associate yourself with a religion that has been used and is still used to justify tyranny against GLBT people.

I'm sorry that I suggested that all Christians be put up against the wall; that was unreasonable. However, I still think that humanity would be better off without Christianity.

Its not the religion that is wrong its the people that use religion are wrong. If it wasn't christianity they were using to spread and defend there hate it would be something else they use to back their hate. So i look at the core teachings of the religion which are meant for the betterment of mankind and not about hate but about tolerance and nothing these people can do can shake my belief that Jesus was alive and walked this earth at one point though i do question a lot about the bible and its followers.

If Christianity helps you, then more power to you. All I ever got out of Christianity was that I was worthless, depraved, and had to beg forgiveness not for any actual crime, but just for having been born human. I prefer to look at humanity's scientific and cultural achievements and view myself as part of a race of gods, not as part of a race of wretched sinners in the hands of a heartless God.

Programmer Cat, there is zero doubt that humanity would be better off completely without religion. A great weight will be lifted once we stop being slaves to myth.

I agree. First we kill the gods, then we kill the governments. :catroar:

christianity doesn't help me in any way i just live my life the right way and believe my beliefs everyone else is free to believe as they wish. The thing is when it comes to beliefs you can't change other peoples beliefs without destroying something in that person so its easier to just let them believe their beliefs and not get into arguments or debates on who is right and wrong.

To use a these-days-common metaphor...
if you had a friend who believed there was a giant diamond buried in his back yard, when, obviously, there isn't, what would you do? Especially if he lived his life as if the diamond was there. It makes him happy, it makes him feel safe, but its obviously a delusion.
What would you do?

I have to say, I side with Sam Harris on this. While the obvious problem is with religious fanatics and fundamentalists (of all religions), the more subtle problem, and probably more serious, is the religious moderate.

I didn't mean to derail the thread by mentioning religion...

you realize even if you rid the world of those two institutions, people will still gather together and form factions/groups/whatever. Its human nature. Even in anarchy people will band together for sake of protecting themselves with one person as the top dog. And when you have a whole bunch of separate groups they will fight for resources, they will make scape goats of other groups, they may enslave weaker groups, etc. Pretty much exactly the same things govts. or religions do. Its not the institution thats the problem its human nature.
