Is it just me that writes with music on?

Most of Seducing Severus is being written to a friends Happy Hardcore mix for cryin out loud!

I can't work in silence!

If you do work with music on, what do you listen to? I'm really eclectic... Linkin Park, Disturbed, Taproot, Alicia Keys, Christopher Franke, Vangelis, Linkin Park...

A lot of authors write to music. You're not weird. :)

I've got 540 mp3s. Too many to list. I listen to metal, country, r&B, classical, jazz, swing, grunge, rock, pop, you pretty much name it.

I have mood groups. I group songs based on the mood they give me so I can pick that playlist and that mood will take effect in my writing. Speed metal for violent stuff, liquid sex for sex scenes, upbeat poppish music for happy moments, that sort of thing.

Thats exactly the same as me, except I have more trancy stuff than "liquid sex".

Altho R+B is reserved for my Romance category stories... ooh :)

Anyone else?

Like KM, my Winamp is filled to the gills with every genre under the sun and it is always playing as I write. However, as I write mainly poignant love stories, it is mainly poignant love songs spilling from my speakers.

It just depends on the story or where I'm at in the story. More times then not though I have music on.

I always have music on. Quite often it's Nickleback - Silver Side Up. For some reason that seems to inspire me.

Music, all the time! Actually, I can write to the radio, including ads. ;-) I put on one station or another, depending, or I pull out one of my huge collection of odd folk CDs bought on street corners from people wielding hammer dulcimers and Celtic harps.

One story I wrote to Wagner opera, "Der Fliegende Hollander", but that was unusual. I have Bach organ fuges and a lot of Handel, but I don't write to those. I tend to stick to stuff with lyrics.

From what I hear, music stimulates the creative side of the brain, and actually increases the complexity of mental pathways in some measurable way. It's both logical, in a mathematical sense, and emotionally suggestive, which has obvious implications for story-making. I can't do without it while writing, even if I'm only humming to myself!

Silence. Absolute silence. Which, given I share a flat with five other students, and the various others who wander through, can be rather difficult. Its amazing how many pleasant people have knocked on my door and been greeted by:

"fuck OFF! I'm writing porn!"

So, no, I don't write to music either.

When I'm writing I can only listen to instrumental music, and not something very complicated. I usually prefer classical piano music then, going for Chopin, Bach or Mozart rather than Bartok or Gorecki. Jazz from the 50s does it too.

So Seducing Severus is now being written to my DVD copy of Philosophers Stone, and ((illegal)) CD of Chamber of Secrets

I'm just gonna rip all the Snape bits and sit there and drool...

I'm with Eros, I need absolute silence when I'm writing, otherwise I get easily distracted and end up with nothing to show for my time.

LMAO, this just struck as so funny. I can almost hear someone saying that. Thanks for the much needed chuckle Eros

my more thought-out stories I write in silence - I can't have even my cat meowing at my feet (actually, usually in my face) or else I can't concentrate.

My upbeat, quick, fun stories I listen to Samba and Techno - it seems to keep my blood pumping. Crystal Method, Bassic, Gravity Kills and for a nice mixture of Samba and Techno: Safri Duo

Rofl Eros.

Sometimes I require silence to get me past a certain bit, but more often I have to have something which I know all the words to, so I can sing without thinking about it. The only thing I can't usually write to is Eminem or Bloodhound Gang as they always make me think about the lyrics, so I lose concentration.

writing to music

I am a huge music fan, so I'm not sure why I never thought of this, but thanks so much for the great ideas. Especially grouping music by mood. (I've done this before, but not specifically for writing) I'll be making some mix tapes as soon as I get some blank tapes. Right now, I mostly write with Jimmy Nutron in the background, as this is the only thing that keeps the baby quiet and happy!

I am inspired by music too...I find the rhythm of the music needs to reflect the rhythm of the story, or its a bust.
For porn, im partial to Bjork, Fiona Apple (but just the first record), Jude and Nina Simone....and the occasional Lenny Kravitz...
although I have been known to pick music to listen to that really reflects what I am going for...for example "Mouth" by Bush or "Animal" by NIN if I am going really hard core, or Enigma "Marque de Sade" if I am looking for mysterious romantisism...

so, after all that blabber, put a check in the "listener" column for me!!

I think for writing porn, I'll probably just turn on BET. The song that makes me the hottest is LUDACRIS, FANTASY. It goes something like this

I wanna l-l-l-lick you from your head to your toes
ANd I wanna move from the bed
down to the-down to the flore
ANd I wanna-
Uh, uh, you make it so good I don't wanna leave
And I wanna kn-n-n-now, what's your fantasy!

AND then the verses talk about different fantacies, back stage at the concert, library(we can do it in the library, on top of the books- but you can' t be too loud) in the car (top down, windows up, that's the way you like to fuck) Shit, if I had that song on continuous loop, I'd never really need litterotica! lol

R. Kelly's good too, if you can get past the allagations about him. Ja-Rule's got that sexy gravely voice going on.And LLCoolJ inspires naughty thoughtsjust watching him lick those lips. SaltNPeppa got the corner on eroic sex songs sor women from Push It to Shoop, Shoop, to What a Man, they got it. And manny more, of course

A new story of mine just went up, it has two votes, and both are 1's as that is the average. So no matter what anybody else honestly votes for the story, it will never make it to the top ten in the voting catagory. Now normally I would have waited until morning to see if any of my stories had been published here, but this time I was online anyway at 3am in the morning so I checked. And what do ya know Bed-n-Brunch Ho was posted, and it had 1 view, and 2 votes, averaging 1.00 for the vote count, how nice. Now I could do the same thing to every new story published here too, but I won't. You see, even with these childish attacks, my stories always average out above 4.30 by those who really read them. So I'm terribly sorry if I'm not a part of the clique in here, but I'll let my stories talk for me about how well I can write.

Anyway... Salt and Peppa... must get hold of...

Must also stop reading slash... oh yeah... bad...

Snape and Katrinne, Snape and Katrinne, Snape and H, DAMNIT!

:)

Normaly quiet. However my wife often plays David Lanz, David Arkenstone, or Yany. I perforce listen.

Silence here for writing.
I don't want to inadvertantly include something I'm listening to. Outside things can find a way to leech into my writing...including if someone is talking to me. Nice way to ruin my flow!

As I write I am also envisioning. If I can't envision it I won't write it. So it takes a bit of concentration. I've enough difficulty keeping 'on task'!

;)

I must have music, but it's usually oldies, like Sarah Vaughn, or Etta James, mood music.

I usually have music.

A complete Mozart opera would be my favourite, followed by Beethoven piano sonatas.

I have written to:

Wagner, Scott Joplin; Buddy Holly; Bizet; Dvorak; Mahler; Beatles; Rolling Stones; Charlie Parker; Welsh Male Voice choirs; Brass bands; Offenbach; Gilbert and Sullivan; Bernstein; Copeland; Bach; Strauss - Richard, Johann, Josef; Verdi; etc.

"Energy Saving" was written to Tyrolean Folk Music - a cassette tape I bought for 20p.
