Fish 'farts' a form of communication?
Last Updated Wed, 05 Nov 2003 16:41:38

VANCOUVER - Herring make farting sounds at night, Canadian and British scientists say. Scientists knew herring have an excellent sense of hearing, but now researcher Ben Wilson of the University of British Columbia Fisheries Centre in Vancouver and his British colleagues investigated their secret noises. At night, herring squeeze bubbles out of their swim bladders through an anal pore.

The action produces distinctive sounds, resembling a person blowing raspberries or farting.

Wilson is now trying to figure out why.

The fish tend to make noise more often when in the company of others, which suggests it plays a social role, the researchers say.

If so, sound may be more important in herring than scientists had thought, and they may need to look into the effects of noise pollution from humans.

The fish may also produce the sounds to ward off predators. Or it could be an incidental effect of staying buoyant, Wilson said.

The commercially valuable fish live in the temperate waters of the northern hemisphere. The study appears in this week's online issue of the Royal Society's Biology Letters.

I firmly believe that Nature has tried everything possible at once time or another here on earth, so fish talking through their anal pores makes perfect sense.

Sound travels better though water than light does, and we already know that the ocean is full of weird noises. There's good evidence now that the sonar mankind uses for navigation and sensing plays a big part in the mass beachings of whales by totally messing with their own echo-location systems so they literally don't know where they're going.

What with the emission of CO2 in bovine farts and now this herring news, it's been a great decade for flatus fans.

Hmmm

I'm wondering if Herring also have an acute sense of smell so those less fortunate Herring who are deaf can enjoy there farts too. :D

Fish talking out of their asses?

This is no big deal. Politicians have been doing it for years.

Dear Quaz,
I find the information to be both interesting and educational. Thank you.

I do not understand, however, why you directed said information to moi in particular.

Huffily,

Do you mean that subaqueous flatulence is outside your purview

Dear Quaz,
No, but I don't think I'm the only one around here who has an interest in such things. I'm hardly the pharoah of flatus. Passing wind in the bathtub and snapping at the bubbles is a pleasant and harmless hobby for millions of Americans.
Rowwwfffff,

It is also a benign method for simulating ownership of a Jacuzzi, for the pelf-challenged majority. :(
