Inspired by two amazing songs,

Stephanie Says
by Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground

and

Jane Says
by Jane's Addiction

Challenge: Can you write a new poem along this theme--

for yourself, a friend, a stranger, someone we might know, sentimental, impromptu, intuitive, comical, whatever number of lines syllables rhyme meter whatever just "someone says"

Someone says write a poem.

Stephanie Says
by Lou Reed, The Velvet Underground

Stephanie says that she wants to know
Why she's given half her life, to people she hates now
Stephanie says when answering the phone
What country shall I say is calling from across the world

But she's not afraid to die, the people all call her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her 'cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind

Stephanie says that she wants to know
why it is though she's the door,
she can't be the room

Stephanie says but doesn't hang up the phone
What city shall I say is calling from across the world

But she's not afraid to die, the people all call her Alaska
Between worlds so the people ask her 'cause it's all in her mind
It's all in her mind

She asks you is it good or bad
It's such an icy feeling it's so cold in Alaska,
it's so cold in Alaska, it's so cold in Alaska

~

Jane Says
by Jane's Addiction

Jane says
I'm done with Sergio
He treats me like a rag doll
She hides
The television
Says I don't owe him nothing,
But if he come back again
Tell him wait right here for me or,
Try again tomorrow

I'm gonna kick tomorrow...
I'm gonna kick tomorrow...

Jane says
Have you seen my wig around?
I feel naked without it
She knows
They all want her to go
That's ok man
She don't like them anyway

Jane says
I'm going away to Spain when i get my money saved
I'm gonna start tomorrow

I'm gonna kick tomorrow...
I'm gonna kick tomorrow...

She gets mad
And she starts to cry
She takes a swing and she can't hit!

She don't mean no harm
She just don't know...
What else to do about it

Jane goes
To the store at eight
She walks up on St. Andrews
She waits
And gets her dinner there
She pulls her dinner
From her pocket

Jane says
I've never been in love
I don't know what it is
She only knows if someone wants her
I want 'em if they want me,...
I only know they want me...

She gets mad
And she starts to cry
She takes a swing and she can't hit!

She don't mean no harm
She just don't know...
What else to do about it

Jane says...
Jane says...

Anna says

Has anyone seen the shadow

That unraveled from my toes

Unconsciously twitching head over shoulder

To see if someone has come in.

Art Say's~

Art say's it all in a creation,
Time, talent and persperation

Will a critc dull it
with devastation?

Art say's it with feelings
from a visual sensation

This is a hobby
not my occupation.

Art say's alot about our soul
The things that surround us,
our Art collection.

Likes and dislikes
from so many locations.

Art say's it with Literature
a Literary Art creation

Just a drop of water in an endless sea
in our Libraries across the nation

Art say's it best
with hints of erotic flurtation

Instilled in us all
the drive for fornication.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Art say's "I hope this is what
annaswirls thread meant
when she asked for poems about
"Someone say's"
Nicholas says
Nicholas says,
I am drowning in this mud, and I wonder
will it dry before my lips sink under?
will you stay to watch,
helpless to change anything,
would you still stay?
Liar says,
I am one person
Please sign your name on the bottom line
Always left wondering how he can skip the heaviest stones across the narrow passages
river turns before we see if it sinks or floats.
Art say's
you can't trust a Liar~
Sense emotions rising higher.
While anna swirls her words with passion.
I toss a stone and in the water it crashes.
Angeline Says
note: I am not actually quoting anyone, nor divulging personal information beyond what I have gleened from reading poems and public posts :)
Angeline says
Jazz and the moon are teeth in one skeleton key-
The master of closets and bone white concrete
doors that open in my hand
over hand over hand
Big T says
T says
You have just not met the right cartographer yet.
And hands you compass
but no matter which way you turn
It keeps pointing right back to you.
T says
I am sure this all means something
even this certainty means something.
He says
Just ask the crow
and he will say
"I am not
a crow."
Eve says
Eve says
Don’t deny it.
She knows it is you. She has
always known it was you.
Eve says
quick look at this
and startles you with your own
insides painted around to this side of familiar
she smiles and says
not quite what you were expecting?
well, what did you expect?
I wouldn't be able to do any of you goys convincingly...
But here's a poem I've been bouncing around between different deaptments in my head for awhile. Your challence lured it out, Swirly.
Caroline says
It's easier to face eyes opened
than to hide an ostrich head.
and hides her ostrich head
between a remote control
and an unmade bed.
But hey,
Caroline says
this is my fuckup,
and you're weclome
to sink in this quicksand
or to walk away.
I've got fresh coffe on.
Help yourself
to the stronger stuff
if you may.
So of bloody course
I stand there,
a doorway indesicion
balancing discretion
and dismay.
How can curtains drawn
and seven days
of second hand air,
nicotine and napkins,
tear stained, soot stained
photos, figurines, fables,
take out thai and teacups,
steal so much
attention
scattered astray?
Caroline says
I know you will.
Not now, but maybe tomorrow,
lean my way and tumble over me.
You see, it's survival, not sorrow.
A flicker of a smile at last,
but way too sharp
and much to fast.
I have all the time I need now,
to wait for you, like you
wouldn't wait
for me.
Be as it may,
just the idea
that I did hesitate
and considered the plunge,
is enough
for today.
Tess says
Tess says
Welcome
without a banner and
winks behind the critics backs, making
faces and tracks with pre-made plaster feet.
Stands, hand on hip.
That outta do it.
K says
K says
You cannot scare a trout. They slip right
through your hands, with those
nail bitten claws, you will never get a hold. Sharpness
is required.
He tells me the net is a gentle option to the hook
but the most respectable ones will never
allow themselves to be caught
and then he slips into
opaque waters before I have the chance to unpack
my best bait.
Hip high waders I practice my technique,
and wait.
did you see how he skipped those heavy stones
light as that right over amazing
considering the plunge
wondering if it will sink in
JD says
JD says to annaswirls:
quit writing so many poems, spat and
jackson pollacked words that paper your floor
yet he hesistates before saying
"like a bird cage liner." because that has been said
too many times before and he is a poet, goddamn it!
he says slow down
you are missing the good parts
there is a magical lighthouse with a golden bell outside your window
leading ghost ships down the alleyway
and you only see your own reflection off the glass.
JD says
wait a minute, I did not say that.
That was you!
and he is right
but I still bet he thought it anyway
:)
she says
c'mon.
outside.
run.
here, there
fall, don't care
run, race
laugh squeal chase
she says
c'mere
sit here
no. don't go.
play.
stay.
I say
ok
What will Boo say?
Boo says forests.
Words thrive in glens shaded
with memory. Sorrow, pity fade,
give way to clearing. Women
dance, speak truths
from knowing lips, gather
children in a stew of arms.
Then moonlight steps
out from the branches,
smiles on tides of sisters
flowing spells from worlds
they carry into constellations.
Wisdom shines.
You are my goodest buddy, Eos!
David says
write
and everything
will be all right
angels will step off
the crest of pin and pain
and float to earth
David says
that Pippa passes
not from heaven
but through lifetimes
of learning
not to be afraid
David says
trade the leaden bells
of past for crowns
of glory written
one poem at a time
break free with rhyme
painted blue
David says
the notes of you
sing clear as nitingales
swing freedom
in the tenor
of an improv stream
and sail into belief
Maria says
Maria says
I paint a garden
where Southern sun and Western winds
crack mud patterns
She leaves soft spaces
for creatures of creep and crawl
to find their way back.
Sit, stay a while, please
don't pick more than you can eat.
Maria says
Don't forget to pluck away the dry dead leaves
They invite pests and rot.
then whispers closer
let the leaves lie
for a while
death makes the best mulch
for canna lillies
