A man fleeing authorities jumped into a pond at a condominium west of West Palm Beach and never resurfaced, a spokesman said.
It took divers about 45 minutes to find the man in the zero-visibility water of the pond, in the Lake Victoria area on the north side of Benoist Farm Road, near Belvedere Road, Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokesman Eric Davis said.
He said the man was taken to Wellington Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:55 a.m, Davis said.
Deputies were called to the area about 10:20 a.m. by a report of a domestic assault, Davis said.
When they arrived, the man ran to the nearby pond, swam to the middle and began treading water. He then dipped below the surface, Davis said.
Two deputies dived in and felt around for the man but could not find him.
Divers from West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue arrived and eventually found the man.
Davis did not immediately know the extent to which the woman might have been assaulted. He and did not yet have an identification of the man.
