After just one year, some schools around the country are dropping out of the healthier new federal lunch program, complaining that so many students turned up their noses at meals packed with whole grains, fruits and vegetables that the cafeterias were losing money.

Federal officials say they don't have exact numbers but have seen isolated reports of schools cutting ties with the $11 billion National School Lunch Program, which reimburses schools for meals served and gives them access to lower-priced food.

Sounds like a good reason to reduce the cafeteria and not drop the program. Hungry kids will eat healthier and if parents can provide that's better. This is the best case scenario.

So spend money to make the cafeteria smaller, Idiot.

Agreed. They should cut staff and make a healthy lunch that the consumer wants. Or what some people call, run a business.

A lot of lower income people work in school cafeterias, some of them not very bright. Where will they get a job? (Serious question, there were some nice people who worked at my school in the cafeteria or as janiotrs. I'm sure most all are retired now, but I imagine its the same type of people today.)

I don't see anything wrong with healthier eating programs. Why is opposition to this a "conservative" cause? Maybe the libertarians don't care, but I don't want a nation of fat ugly slobs. I want a country with people that don't make me want to gag when I look at them. :)

Worry about that later. I don't disagree with the point your making, sorta. I can only imagine how much longer it's going to take before we figure out how to replace both of those jobs entirely with machines but that's ultimately a problem for later. Don't fight progress because you're worried about jobs. Worry about progressing the politics of this country to deal with a world where much less labor is necessary.

Or more accurately children are denied a great many choices, this is just one more thing that we are going to limit their choices on. If they go home and pig out on ice cream so fucking be it.

Are you seriously asking where would people who have experience in the food industry work?

I feel the same about asshat posters like you. Why shouldn't you gag, I do.

You didn't say the Fed, you said the government stupid.

Even then state control over schools is stupid. We should have the power at the federal level.

Fed had the food program. School had it and was going broke. School says fuck off fed. We will do it our way. Fed can't control anything, especially schools.

Then adjust the program. Like I said, hungry kids will eat healthy and if they don't want to then they can bring food from home. Downsize the program to whatever is the appropriate size.

And the Fed can and should control schools. It not controlling schools is one of those stupid things that we still do even if it doesn't make sense anymore.

You already have a nation of fat ugly slobs. And they aren't teaching their kids any better habits.
