EXPOSED: Koch Industries and Cancer Risk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZWAQ_3yoj8

While the (Koch) brothers wage war against safety precautions, every day their factory is dumping millions of gallons
of wastewater into streams that flow near a small rural town in Arkansas.

"....the town of Crossett, Arkansas and focuses on a community of residents on Penn Road. Among 15 families, there have been at least 11 deaths from cancer, and many more people are ill. The source of their anguish seems to be coming from a foul smelling canal of water, steaming with toxic pollutants, that runs through the woods near their homes."

October 10, 2011

...."the town's only manufacturer and main employer: Georgia Pacific. A Koch Industries subsidiary,
Georgia Pacific is a plywood, paper mill and formaldehyde resin plant that has been dumping
millions of gallons of wastewater into open ditches."

"The cruel irony is that while Crossett residents mourn the loss of their family members and neighbors to cancer,
David Koch -- a cancer survivor himself -- has donated hundreds of millions to cancer research."

On Aug. 24, 1996, Danielle Smalley and her high school friend and neighbor Jason Stone, both 17,
smelled gas outside Smalley’s mobile home in rural Lively, Texas, 50 miles southeast of Dallas.

The truck stalled after the couple drove into a fog-like cloud, says Danielle’s father, Danny Smalley,
who watched them drive away. It was butane vapor, leaking from a corroded steel pipeline.
Seconds later, as Danielle restarted the truck, the gas ignited into a fireball,

burning Danielle and Jason to death.

The 570-mile-long pipeline carrying liquid butane from Medford, Oklahoma, to Mont Belvieu,
Texas had corroded so badly that one expert, Edward Ziegler, likened it to Swiss cheese.

A memo forwarded by Caffey to another Koch executive vice president justified putting a 70-mile section
of the pipeline back into operation after being closed for three years because it could earn
more than $7 million in operating income a year.

The state jury awarded Danny Smalley $296 million in its Oct. 21, 1999, verdict.
The jury found that Koch Industries acted with malice because it had been aware
of the extreme risks of using the faulty pipeline.

You do know how much the Koch brothers donate to cancer research.

God Bless them for fighting the Union Mafia

A few dead teenagers or a town filled with cancer or a dead waterway is a minor thing compared to the need for industrial jobs in America.

God Bless Koch Industries

Bill's not involved, is he?

I do not think so. The article exposing the company's corruption throughout the world is very lengthy. A long read. Somewhere in that article, I read Bill was at odds with his brothers. After disagreements and a failed takeover attempt in the early 80s, he sold his shares. In 1989, Bill Koch told a U.S. Senate special committee on investigations that Koch Industries was stealing oil on American Indian reservations, cheating the federal government of royalties.

Wow! This reeks of corporate greed on a global scale. Bribes, deaths, cheating families out of money, defying safety Federal and International regulations, harassing and trying to cover up private internal investigations, punishing whistle-blowers, lawsuits abound with payoffs, releasing deadly gases into the atmosphere. Where does it all begin or end?

I was referring to the Bill who was the first American to win an Olympic XC skiing medal.

I guess that you are young enough to have been schooled since the republican cuts in the education budgets. Or you have been listening to right wing radio for too long.

They say God loves fools and drunks, so maybe you will be okay

Mark Lindquist, who nearly gave his life trying to save three disabled adults from the Joplin tornado-

Mark Lindquist was at work. The three middle-aged men with Down syndrome living in the group home were his responsibility.
Lindquist's employer was Community Support Services.
Because there was no basement or shelter and the residents moved too slowly to relocate, Lindquist and Tackett
placed mattresses over the men for protection, then climbed atop the mattresses for added weight.
The EF-5 tornado was among the nation's worst ever. It destroyed more than 7,000 homes, including the group home,
and killed 162 people. The tornado killed the people he was trying to save.

VS

the Accident Fund Insurance Co. of America of Lansing, Mich-

He (Mark Lindquist ) assumed workers' compensation would cover his bills, but his claim was denied
"based on the fact that there was no greater risk than the general public at the time you were involved in the Joplin tornado,"
according to a letter to Lindquist from Accident Fund Insurance Company of America, his company's workers' comp provider."

Jhan Hurn, head of Community Support Services Mark Lindquist's boss) expressed disbelief when told of the denial.

"We did file a claim for him. We want to see him get it. We're are going to file an appeal because we don't agree with that,"
Hurn said. "He was on duty putting into effect our emergency procedures during a tornado. Our feelings are that he
was on the job working."

"Accident Fund is a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan."

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan a non- profit?
The Attorney General took Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to court-
"....violating the terms of Public Act 350 of 1980, improper contributions to an insurance company,
and breaching the terms of the purchase agreement that enabled BCBSM to acquire the Accident Fund."

"Subscriber funds were used so Blue Cross could purchase a for-profit company. And consumers, the sick and the elderly
have paid higher premiums because funds that could have been used to lower their costs were diverted for this purchase."

BCBSM transferred $125 million to the Accident Fund in November, 2007.
The Accident Fund purchased CompWest Insurance Co.
of California for $127 million in November, 2007.

Mike Cox said his investigation showed that BCBSM transferred $125 million to the Accident Fund in November, 2007.

Where did Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan get the 125 million dollars
that it GAVE to a private company ( Accident Fund) a for profit company
that it owns- so that it could buy another for profit company?

"This ruling supports my charges that Blue Cross broke the law when it bought for-profit companies and when
it used $125 million of their customers' money to do it," Cox said.

Behind Michigan's "Financial Martial Law": Corporations and Right-Wing Billionaires

The think tank that inspired Gov. Rick Snyder's controversial bill is bankrolled by some of the same donors that funded
Wisconsin's attack on unions.

"....a little-known Michigan think tank that for years has been pushing for the most controversial provisions in Snyder's bill—
and that's bankrolled by some of the same right-wing millionaires and billionaires that backed Wisconsin Gov.
Scott Walker and his anti-union legislation."

"In January, the free-market-loving center published four recommendations, including granting emergency managers
the power to override elected officials (such as a mayor or school board member) and toss out union contracts.
All four ended up in Snyder's legislation."

"....a review of tax records shows that the group's funders include the charitable foundations of the nation's
largest corporations and a host of wealthy conservative and libertarian benefactors. Between 2002 and 2009,
the Mackinac Center's donors included the Charles G. Koch Foundation ($69,151), founded by the chairman
and CEO of Koch Industries, who, with his brother, David, is a major backer of conservative causes;
the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation ($80,000), the charity tied to the son of the co-founder of Amway,
the multibillion-dollar direct marketing company; the Edgar and Elsa Prince Foundation, established
by the parents of Blackwater founder Erik Prince, who serves as the foundation's vice president
($195,000); and the Walton Family Foundation ($100,000), established by Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton
and his wife, Helen."

Does this sound like a free market to you?

US Sues Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield
October 18, 2010

Washington - The Justice Department alleged Monday in a lawsuit that Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield is discouraging competition
by engaging in practices that raise hospital prices, conduct an assistant attorney general vowed to challenge anywhere else it is
found in the United States.

The suit targets "most favored nation" clauses between Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield and health care providers which,
according to the government, essentially guarantee that no competing health care plan can obtain a better rate.

Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield has most-favored-nation clauses or similar language in contracts with at least 70 of 131
general acute care hospitals in the state, the government alleges.

The lawsuit said that Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield intended to raise hospital costs for competing health care plans
and reduce competition for the sale of health insurance.

"As a result, consumers in Michigan are paying more for their health care services and health insurance,"
Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney, who runs the Justice Department's antitrust division, told reporters.

Went to school with a very liberal academia including the head of the State's PTA.

To their credit unlike the scum in WI they did not use their students or try to indoctrinate them.
