Some of the cars the students at my college drive make me sick.

Would you go and buy your 18 year old college freshman daughter a brand new 2002 Lexus IS-300? Keep in mind this car prices in the mid to upper 30's and I would consider it a high performance automobile. I saw this lexus parked at 7-11 with the 30 day tags still on the car and the Resident parking pass, required for all students who live on campus and have a car almost guarantees that they are a freshman, hanging from the mirror. The car had at least 6 little freshman girls boping to the music and waiting for the one girl who was 21, or had a fake, to come back with the beer.

Or how about a AMG Hummer? 60,000 plus dollars

Two of these on my campus.

Acural NSX? 60,000 plus

Four or five of these on campus and all but one is owned by a student.

Audi TT? mid upper 30,000's

I think three distinct ones that I have seen but there could be more since black is such a popular color for the car.

Dodge Viper? 50,000 plus

At least one that I know of.

There are probably a dozen corvettes that are either brand new or nearly knew and many other cars in the same price performance range.

What the hell are these parents thinking? I remember how I drove as a teenager. I had two speeding tickets and two accidents before I was 20. I can't imagine what would have happend if I had a viper or Vette to play with.

They're thinking:

" I never had enough time to play with my kid in the yard, so I'll buy him this really, really expensive car so he'll still love me."

Either that or they're ignorant bastards.

I knew a guy in H.S. that drove around an old rust bucket truck, and saved up his money till his senior year. Bought himself a nice sporty yellow car.

So, sometimes it's actually a result of hard work.

Which is why I did not include Camaros, Mustangs, Integras or any other mid priced late model car.

I seriously doubt any HSers saved up enough money to afford a 40,000 dollar car.

Maybe so, but it looked really fucking cool.

What? That doesn't matter?

Well then, please refer to my first three sentences.

:D

Don't sweat it... these are the guys who will always have gas in the tank, anytime you need to siphon some off.

Plus think how pissed they will get first time someone dings them in the parking lot... :D

I didn't look it up, but I think you're low by about $20,000

The original vipers, no roof, no AC, no windows, were just under 50,000. The new coupes start at just under 70,000.

They are one of the reasons I love the occasional freakishly large hale storm we get around here. :D

I don't see anything wrong in that ... if the parents want to buy such a car for their son or daughter that is their choice ... its their money and they can do as they wish ...

There is no need to judge some one on the type of car they drive.

That sucks! I want one...:D Oh and I want my college tuition paid for. How come some people get ALL the luck?

I want my parents to buy me an Escort. Not a car, an actual escort.

Well, how about my first term at Uni then?

I swear 80% of people were wearing designer/label stuff. Very well dressed bunch that kept walking in and out. I remember wondering where the heck I had ended up...

As my window was towards the entrance I kept seeing BMWs, Porches and even a Ferrari drive around. Trust me, that feels weird when you're used to Saabs, Volvo's and similar.

Mind you, these cars were also not owned by students, they were rented over the weekends. Apart from the guy who had his dad ship his Ferrari from Saudi Arabia, then drove around in London, crashed it and had the police bring him back to school with the squashed car. A week later he had a new one.

I was sooo relieved when the fall students arrived, more down to earth...

He he Still, living in Richmond and Kensington for 2.5 years did get me used to seeing those type of cars.

Oh, and I LOVE Lexuses! Damn. Rode in one the first time last summer and I fell in love. I'm still lobbying for my parents to get one now when they're choosing a new car. Unfortunately they seem to be keen on a Saab instead... :(

Hmmmm What kind of car did your parents buy you?

My mom did not buy me a car for graduation.

I bought my own car and I bought the car I wanted regardless of the price because that is what I worked for and wanted ... :)

But I really don't see any thing wrong in parents buying the kids cars they like ...

I agree, don't judge people solemnly on their posessions, nor the way they look or what they wear. You can tell parts of them, but not all.

Heck, if I follow my culture you Americans are spoilt all of you! In Sweden nobody would even CONSIDER buying their kid a car!!!! If you have a car at the age of 18 then you're definitely looked up upon by others.

Personal belief here but I have always felt that a person should buy their first car on their own. If it means working for it so much the better they might actually learn the value of something. It has been my experience that kids that have stuff handed to them on a silver platter don't always know the value of what they have.

Just so people don't say that maybe I'm one of these my first car was a 73 Chevy Nova that I bought in 85 for $500

The $50,000 viper was years ago. I guess I assumed these kids all had new cars from the tone of the thread. :)

I can beat you. '84 Chevrolet Chevette. If you stood it up, it could fit in my closet. I bought it from my grandmother for $50.

Innocent, when I buy a new car, you can have my piece of shit '90 Honda Accord. It even has a CD player. OK?

TB4p

I agree with you Azwed, 100%.

High School is just as bad. There have been times I have been embarrassed to drive my car to school. Not my current one, but in the past. And I am a teacher. I get so pissed when the kids I am teaching can afford more car than I can. Or that mumsy and daddy got it for them.

It tells me a lot about how teachers are regarded by society.

Now Ford has this deal where in May teachers can get a 500 dollar rebate on any Ford car or truck. 500 dollars. Wow. Just the fact that we need a break like this sucks if you ask me.

My college car was a '76 AMC Matador. So damned rusty you could watch the road go by between your legs... Of course I paid for college myself.

I still cring at the things I did in a car almost 30 years later.

I can't imagine that kind of performance cars in drunk kids hands.

Take out a term insurance policy on the male drivers, you could get it for nothing.....then, when they bite the dust, you can get you a cool car.

Having read some of your post the last few months, I have concluded you are not the least bit interested in your classmate’s welfare.

You are just fucking jealous!

Jealous? Hardly I don't care for the vehicles that these people drive as I don't see wasting money that could be used better else where.
