I received a call from my friend today. She was trying to remove some floor tile from her brothers Patio so the contractor and inspectors could find the Lag Bolts. She had received one tile but couldn't even chip the second. She wanted me to come over and see what I could do.

I showed up and she showed me the tile in question. It was a ten by ten inch tile. Looking at where she had chipped the first tile up with a chisel I could see why she was having problems. Who ever had put in these tiles hadn't been playing games. They were well cemented.

I started trying to get the cement from between the tiles and was having no luck when my friend handed me an Angle Grinder.

Oops all she had was a metal grinding blade, and I was wearing shorts, but she wanted that damned tile out.

Her metal grinding wheel is half it's original size, my leg and left arm are peppered with burns and the tile is out.

Oh, There are five twenties sitting in my wallet.

Lessons learned?

Next time I bring my own Angle Grinder with appropriate wheels.
Next time I bring a Dust Mask.
Next time I wear jeans and bring my knee pads.

Oh the sparks were impressive.

I know absolutely nothing about angle grinders--what kind of wheel should they have?

That depends on what you are grinding/cutting. They have wheels for grinding metal, cement and even tile. They also have cut off wheels for cutting the same. I have seen steel wire brushes for them and even small sanding disks.

Yep, forgot those.

I also saw small saw blades of different types. Now those could be usefull.

On another note today I saw a powered Block type Plane. Now I could have some fun with that.

I have found one way to remove old tile is to heat them with a flat iron. It melts the cement, and they can be pulled off more easily. It's slow, but neat.

I'll have to remember that. Thanks for the tip.

On the same thread I felt a largeish lump coming up on my left shin. It was in a hard to reach spot so I had my wife look at it. She squeezed it a bit then grabbed a set of forceps from my bag. She removed a 1/4 inch long shard of what looks like tile from my leg.
